For some Parkinson’s symptoms, the first step in treatment is to adjust your diet.

  • Constipation: Drinking more fluids and eating more fiber can help maintain regularity. Aim to drink six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. Warm liquids, especially in the morning, can stimulate bowel movements. Dietary sources of fiber consist of fruits , vegetables, legumes, whole grain breads and cereals. Most of these are high in antioxidants, as well.

It is common for people in the later stages of Parkinsons disease to lose a considerable amount of weight as their symptoms become more debilitating. They may also get dementia and no longer recognise the food they are served. They may:

  • Become increasingly frail and become confined to the bed or wheelchair
  • Be completely unable to safely chew or swallow
  • Lose control of their bladder or bowels
  • Difficulty breathing

A high-fiber diet is a proven way to avoid constipation, a common problem for people with PD.

Parkinsons can slow down the intestines and cause constipation, Dr. Gostkowski says. Fiber helps keep things moving. There are plenty of high-fiber foods out there, so choose your favorites. Women should aim for 25 grams of fiber per day, and men should get 38 grams.

Changing your diet can be difficult. Try making one change at a time, like eating a handful of nuts a few times a week or avoiding white bread. Small changes can add up to big benefits.

  • Consult with a registered dietician, who can help you plan menus and make shopping lists for preparing nutritious meals that you like and that account for your individual needs and the timing of your medications.
  • An occupational therapist can help you explore assistive devicesto make eating and drinking easier.
  • If you experience anxiety or depression, talk to your doctor. These symptoms can suppress appetite.
  • If swallowing issues are causing problems eating, a speech-language pathologist may be able to help.

I Find I Am Underweight What Can I Do

You may find you are underweight, and have difficulty putting weight on. Sometimes weight loss can be due to practical problems to do with food preparation and keeping your food hot while you are eating. Also, we know that a non-motor symptom of Parkinsons is the loss of smell, which can impact on taste or appetite.

If you are underweight, the following advice may be useful, or ask to see a registered dietitian for assessment and advice.

Try to have three meals a day and two to three snacks in between. It is important to try to eat every two to three hours during the day, or at least have a milk shake, malted drink or smoothie. Nutritious supplements can be purchased from chemists and supermarkets.

Full-fat pasteurised milk is an excellent drink and can be used in cooking. To make it even more nutritious, add three to four tablespoons of milk powder to a pint of full-fat milk, and drink at least one pint every day.

Make the most of adding extras to foods, such as extra cream, butter, or sugar/honey to sauces, mashed potato, vegetable purees, desserts, puddings, porridge, coffee and more. These will make the food more energy dense, and tasty!

I Am Overweight What Can I Do

Its easy to gain weight if you become less active but are eating the same amount of food.

If you are trying to lose weight, here are some tips to start with:

  • Dont eat fried food regularly grill, dry fry, microwave, bake, steam, poach or boil, without adding fat or oils. Instead, use marinades, adding extra herbs, stock and spices for flavour.
  • Use skimmed or semi-skimmed milk instead of full fat.
  • Try eating healthier snacks like diet yoghurts, nuts, fruit, crumpets or teacakes.
  • Have sugar-free, no added sugar or low-calorie drinks and use artificial sweetener instead of sugar.

If you have other health conditions as well as Parkinsons, such as circulation problems, high cholesterol, heart disease or diabetes, and are concerned about being overweight, speak to your GP, specialist, Parkinsons nurse or ask to see a registered dietitian.

Maintaining A Healthy Weight

Parkinsons may lead to gain weight due to reduced mobility. Being overweight can strain your joints which can in turn make moving around more difficult. If this happens you may be advised to watch your diet and control the calories you consume, for example by avoiding fried foods, sweet desserts, cakes, biscuits and sugary drinks.

More commonly, people with Parkinsons lose weight. If you lose weight this may be due to a number of factors loss of appetite, difficulty eating or swallowing, nausea, using extra energy to cope with symptoms such as dyskinesia or your body may not absorb nutrients efficiently. Various medications may also affect your body weight.

The following suggestions may help increase your calorie intake:

  • Try eating four or five small but appetising meals a day, with a snack between each meal.
  • Incorporate a little more butter, cream, peanut butter, milkshakes, biscuits, chocolate and dessert, but make sure you take good care of your teeth if you eat a lot of sugary food!
  • Add three or four tablespoons of milk powder to half a litre of full cream milk to make it more nutritious.
  • Try nutritious drinks specially formulated to easily increase calorie intake.
  • Eat food that you like as you are likely to consume more.
  • If you find cutlery difficult to use, try to have some meals that you can manage with your fingers or using only a spoon.

How Can Protein Affect My Medication

What’s best to eat if you have Parkinson’s Disease

In some people, protein may interfere with the effects of their levodopa medication. Therefore its generally advised that you should take your Parkinsons medication at least 30 to 45 minutes before meals.

Some people with Parkinsons have told us that their medication is less affected by some milk alternatives, such as rice milk, although there is no actual evidence to support this.

You may also find it helpful to:

  • reduce the amount of protein you eat earlier in the day. This may help to increase the response your body has to the medication and avoid unpredictable motor fluctuations
  • eat your main protein meal in the evening, as a slower response to medication may not be as
  • important as at other times of the day
  • If you do wish to review the timing of your protein intake, you should talk to your GP, specialist or
  • Parkinsons nurse, or ask to see a registered dietitian.

You shouldnt stop eating protein altogether as its vital to help your body renew itself and fight infection. Reducing protein may cause dangerous weight loss.

We cant list all the possible side effects of all Parkinsons drugs here, but some Parkinsons medication may cause:

  • nausea and vomiting

These side effects may interfere with your appetite, which may lead to you eating and drinking less. A dietitian may be able to advise you on how to manage these symptoms, especially if they affect your normal appetite.

Foods Containing Saturated Fat And Cholesterol

Some studies suggest that dietary fat intake may increase the risk of Parkinsons.

Although having a higher intake of cholesterol can elevate a persons Parkinsons risk, having a higher intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids may reduce the risk.

Therefore, a person with Parkinsons may wish to reduce their intake of cholesterol to help control the symptoms of the condition. They may also wish to reduce the amount of saturated fat in their diet.

However, further studies are required to explore the link between dietary fat and Parkinsons.

Stay At A Healthy Weight

Malnutrition and weight loss are often problems for people with Parkinsonâs. So itâs good to keep track of your weight.

Weigh yourself once or twice a week, unless your doctor says to do it more often. If you are taking diuretics or steroids, such as prednisone, you should step on the scale daily.

If you gain or lose weight noticeably , talk to your doctor. They may want change your food and drinks to manage your condition.

If you need to gain weight:

Ask your doctor if nutritional supplements are right for you. Some can be harmful or interfere with your medication.

Avoid low-fat or low-calorie foods unless youâve been told otherwise. Instead, use whole milk, whole milk cheese, and yogurt.

Eat Plenty Of Protein But Not With Levodopa Medications

If youre taking a levodopa medication, your doctor may tell you to avoid protein when taking your meds. Both animal and plant protein can interfere with the absorption of levodopa medications.

But you should still eat plenty of protein. Just be strategic with the timing. Dont take levodopa medications with meals, Dr. Gostkowski says. Its best to take it on an empty stomach either 30 minutes before your meal or an hour after eating.

If you get nauseous from the medication, eat a small amount of starchy food with it, such as crackers. Make sure whatever you eat with your medicine doesnt have protein. Its a misunderstanding that people with Parkinsons should avoid protein, Dr. Gostkowski says. You definitely need protein in your diet. Just dont eat it when youre taking your levodopa medication.

Combine Exercise With Diet

Dr. Gostkowski says if you want to feel your best, combine a healthy diet with exercise. Research has shown that regular exercise can improve PD symptoms.

Do exercise that raises your heart rate, Dr. Gostkowski says. Aim for about 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Dont worry about specific exercises. Do an activity you enjoy, as long as it gets your heart rate up. Try brisk walking or biking or more advanced exercise for veteran athletes. I recommend seeing an occupational therapist. They can tailor an exercise program to your needs.

The components of a Mediterranean diet include:

  • Eat mainlyplant-based foods, such as a variety of fruits and vegetables, along with whole grains, nuts, and legumes, including lentils, chickpeas, beans, and peas.
  • Consume a small amount of low-fat protein, either chicken or fatty fish, such as salmon, albacore tuna, or mackerel, a few times per week.
  • Limit red meat to a few times a month.
  • Avoid salt and instead flavor your meals with spices and herbs.
  • Drink red wine in moderation .
  • Replace butter with a healthier fat like extra virgin olive oil.
  • Limit dairy, including cream, milk, and ice cream.

Impact Of Diet On Parkinsons Medications
