Asked about the future of Parkinsons disease in the US, Dr Ray Dorsey says, Were on the tip of a very, very large iceberg.

Dorsey, a neurologist at the University of Rochester Medical Center and author of Ending Parkinsons Disease, believes a Parkinsons epidemic is on the horizon. Parkinsons is already the fastest-growing neurological disorder in the world in the US, the number of people with Parkinsons has increased 35% the last 10 years, says Dorsey, and We think over the next 25 years it will double again.

Most cases of Parkinsons disease are considered idiopathic they lack a clear cause. Yet researchers increasingly believe that one factor is environmental exposure to trichloroethylene , a chemical compound used in industrial degreasing, dry-cleaning and household products such as some shoe polishes and carpet cleaners.

To date, the clearest evidence around the risk of TCE to human health is derived from workers who are exposed to the chemical in the work-place. A 2008 peer-reviewed study in the Annals of Neurology, for example, found that TCE is a risk factor for parkinsonism. And a 2011 study echoed those results, finding a six-fold increase in the risk of developing Parkinsons in individuals exposed in the workplace to trichloroethylene .

Stan Swamy, an activist who spent much of his life fighting for the rights of the marginalised and dispossessed, is dead. Swamy was 84, and suffered from Parkinsons disease. But this malady cannot be singularly blamed for the deterioration in his health over the last year. Instead, the blame lies squarely with the Indian state.

That is because the octogenerian human rights worker was put in jail by the National Investigation Agency in October 2020, as an accused in the controversial Bhima Koregaon case for which the police has so far presented almost no reliable evidence and shown little interest in actually beginning the trial.

The NIA and the judges overseeing the case proceeded to keep Swamy in jail for eight months, despite the clear impact it had on his health. In November 2020, it emerged that Swamy had to wait weeks to just get access to warm clothes and a sipper with a straw, even though he had difficulty holding a glass because of his disease. Swamy was repeatedly denied bail, despite his age, limited mobility and absence of criminal history.

The toll this took on his health was impossible to ignore. Swamy fell and injured himself several times while in jail.

As Swamy told judges of the Bombay High Court in an interim bail hearing,

Plaintiff Worked As A Paraquat Distributor

According to his complaint, the plaintiff worked as a paraquat distributor through his familys business, G& H Seed, in Louisiana. As a field representative for the business, he was directly responsible for checking farm fields both before and after paraquat was sprayed for approximately three years, and up to 30 days each year.

This task involved walking the fields after paraquat was applied to determine the effectiveness of the application. Paraquat is one of the most widely used herbicides in the U.S. to control weeds in many agricultural and non-agricultural settings. It is also used to desiccate crops like cotton prior to harvest.

The plaintiff states that he was exposed to paraquat in three ways:

• When it was mixed, loaded, applied, and/or cleaned.
• As a result of spray drift .
• As a result of contact with sprayed plants.

The plaintiff believes that paraquat entered his bloodstream and attacked his nervous system. He was diagnosed with Parkinsons disease in 2014. At first, he had no idea that paraquat could be to blame. He knew the herbicide was toxic but didnt know it was associated with the disease until recently.

Because of his diagnosis, the plaintiff has been unable to maintain regular employment and has subsequently incurred expenses for medical treatment that are expected to be ongoing.

Why might this be important to families challenged by PD? Because the biggest source of conflict in families occurs when loved ones fail to recognize that a person with brain changes is not the same person who existed at an earlier time in life. Human beings greatly value continuity in personality but by expecting the person to be the same as they once were, loved ones are unfair to the person with brain insult. This person could no more return to an earlier personality state than he or she can will away tremors or rigidity. Energy expended in any way other than coming to terms with this new person is fruitless. There is actually some fascinating research in this area and it is likely to be a topic for a great deal more discussion in future blogs.

Because of the greater likelihood for executive dysfunction and dementia, personality change is easier to see among individuals with more advanced PD. Motivation is frequently affected, resulting in apathy that diminishes how actively an individual interacts with other people and with the world . Thinking or cognition changes can cause the person to process information more slowly and with less focus and concentration . A previously methodical, consistent individual often becomes increasingly chaotic in their response to their environment . One easily becomes less interested and hopeful about the future .

This Chemical Is Banned In Europe But Common In The Us

Doctors have a difficult time tracing cases of Parkinsons Disease back to their root cause, in no small part because the degenerative neurological condition can be triggered by exposure to chemicals years before any symptoms emerge.

But case numbers have increased drastically in the US over the course of the last decade, University of Rochester Medical Center neurologist Ray Dorsey warned The Guardian, and a carcinogen called TCE thats commonly used in household and industrial cleaning products might be to blame.

Scientists first linked TCE to Parkinsons back in 2012, but the compound is often overlooked in studies on the disease because whole decades can pass in between exposure and the onset of symptoms in some cases, according to The Guardian. In the meantime, other causes including gut hormones have been linked to the disease, but an increasing body of evidence continues to point toward chemical exposure. TCE is banned in Europe, but there are no federal restrictions on it in the US, and only Minnesota and New York have banned the compound.

Numerous studies have linked well water to Parkinsons disease, and its not just TCE in those cases, it can be pesticides like paraquat, too, Dorsey told The Guardian.
