High Blood Pressure Medications
We usually hear a lot about metoprolol side effects including hair loss. But that is not the only blood pressure medication linked to alopecia. ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers, both used to treat high blood pressure and other heart conditions, can cause hair fall in some patients after a few months of starting the treatment.
The most common heart and blood pressure medications that cause hair loss include:
Only about 1 to 5 percent of patients report hair loss with blood pressure medication, and it is usually a temporary side effect and fully reversible.
Furosemide is a blood pressure medication that does not cause hair loss as is Hydrochlorothiazide. Discuss with your doctor the pros and cons of these drugs and the ones you are taking.
Do not interrupt or change the dose of your current medication without first consulting with a health professional.
How Is Parkinsons Disease Treated
There is no cure for Parkinsons disease. However, medications and other treatments can help relieve some of your symptoms. Exercise can help your Parkinsons symptoms significantly. In addition, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language therapy can help with walking and balance problems, eating and swallowing challenges and speech problems. Surgery is an option for some patients.
What Can You Do If You Have Hair Loss From Medications
Discuss with your doctor if your dosage can be adjusted or if you can switch to another medication that also helps your condition without the hair loss side effect. Never do this without the strict supervision of your doctor.
In most cases, hair loss from medication will stop a few weeks after you discontinue the drug. However, new hair growth can take a while and might not return to its original texture or volume.
If you have been taking the medication for a long time, you might also develop chronic telogen effluvium. That means you might continue losing hair even after stopping the medication. Chronic telogen effluvium can last up to 7 years.
Discuss your hair loss with your doctor. Discontinuing the drug is not always the only solution. Sometimes, adjusting the dosage or adding a supplement can help a great deal.

Treating Multiple System Atrophy
There’s currently no cure for MSA and no way of slowing its progression.
People with the condition typically live for 6 to 9 years after their symptoms start and may get worse quickly during this time. Some people may live for more than 10 years after being diagnosed.
The symptoms can be managed so that the person is as independent and comfortable as possible.
Find out how to manage:
Physiotherapy and occupational therapy can help people with MSA stay mobile and maintain their fitness and muscle strength.
Supplements That Cause Hair Loss
Yes. Supplements can cause hair loss in some people, and it is usually related to the dosage. It is very important to follow the recommended dietary allowances for each supplement and discussing with your doctor the addition of a supplement to your routine.
Even though vitamins, minerals, and some herbs are very beneficial to your health, there are plenty of natural sources for them and it is difficult to calculate how much you are really ingesting of a particular nutrient. For example, if you are supplementing with zinc, you need to be careful about the orange juice and other zinc-enriched products you might be consuming too.
The most common supplements to trigger telogen effluvium include:
- Vitamin A RDA 700-900ug
- Vitamin E RDA 3-4 mg

The 5 Stages Of Parkinsons Disease
Getting older is underrated by most. Its a joyful experience to sit back, relax and watch the people in your life grow up, have kids of their own and flourish. Age can be a beautiful thing, even as our bodies begin to slow down. We spoke with David Shprecher, DO, movement disorders director at Banner Sun Health Research Institute about a well-known illness which afflicts as many as 2% of people older than 65, Parkinsons Disease.
Amazing For An Intensive Workout

What Are The Different Stages Of Parkinsons Disease
Each person with Parkinsons disease experiences symptoms in in their own unique way. Not everyone experiences all symptoms of Parkinsons disease. You may not experience symptoms in the same order as others. Some people may have mild symptoms others may have intense symptoms. How quickly symptoms worsen also varies from individual to individual and is difficult to impossible to predict at the outset.
In general, the disease progresses from early stage to mid-stage to mid-late-stage to advanced stage. This is what typically occurs during each of these stages:
Early symptoms of Parkinsons disease are usually mild and typically occur slowly and do not interfere with daily activities. Sometimes early symptoms are not easy to detect or you may think early symptoms are simply normal signs of aging. You may have fatigue or a general sense of uneasiness. You may feel a slight tremor or have difficulty standing.
Often, a family member or friend notices some of the subtle signs before you do. They may notice things like body stiffness or lack of normal movement slow or small handwriting, lack of expression in your face, or difficulty getting out of a chair.
Standing and walking are becoming more difficult and may require assistance with a walker. You may need full time help to continue to live at home.
Hormones Related Drugs Contraceptives
Female hormones and male hormones are normally maintained in a delicate balance in women. When this balance is disturbed due to normal physiological effects such as menopause and pregnancy, it can negatively affect hair growth.
Hair is lost after 2-3 months of discontinuation of oral contraceptives. The effect is related to prolongation of the anagen phase, with increased estrogen levels. Using low dose estrogen contraceptives seem to reduce the hair loss.
The American Hair Loss Association describes the role of testosterone and its product dihydrotestosterone in hair loss in both men and women. It also provides a list of low and high- androgen index contraceptives.
Hormones and Related drugs Include:
- Birth Control Pills
- Hormone-replacement therapy for women
- Male androgenic hormones and all forms of testosterone
- Sterile medroxy progestrone acetate suspension
The American Hair Loss Association recommends that all women interested in using oral contraceptives for the prevention of conception should only use low-androgen index birth control pills, and if there is a strong predisposition for genetic hair loss in your family we recommend the use of another non-hormonal form of birth control.

How To Stop Hair Loss Due To Creatine
Hair loss caused by creatine is highly unlikely. But if youre committed to experiencing the benefits of creatine, you can take certain measures to further lower your chances of hair loss.
The first step is to take better care of your hair. Shampoo and clean your scalp regularly, drink plenty of fluids, and eat foods that are rich in protein, vitamins, and iron that are known to improve hair growth. Some of the best foods you can eat to promote hair growth are eggs, spinach, berries, fatty fish, and nuts.
You can also consult a nutrition expert to develop a proper diet and supplementation plan. Too much of anything is bad for you and the same can be said about creatine.

The Hair Loss And Stroke Link
Alopecia areata can be associated with other autoimmune diseases as well as thyroid disorders. These same conditions are also known to produce serious alterations in the body’s regular physiologic functions and can potentially set the stage for a stroke.
Autoimmune conditions are disorders in which the bodys immune system attacks the body itself. This self-attack can manifest in a number of different ways, whether by attacking hair follicles and producing alopecia areata, or by causing stickiness of blood cells and clot formation, or inflammation of blood vessels in the brain leading to strokes.

Is Creatine Hair Loss Reversible
Yes, creatine hair loss can be reversible. It has been noted that hair loss is due to creatines ability to act as an androgen receptor agonist . If you stop taking the creatine supplement then the hair follicles will start regenerating. There still needs to be more extensive studies in this area before we know for sure. However, there is a lot of anecdotal evidence from people who have stopped taking creatine supplements and their hair eventually grew back.
From personal experience, I found that when I was taking creatine supplements my hair started to thin. At first, I didnt think much of it because there are a number of other factors you can attribute hair loss too such as stress or genetics. However, over time the thinning continued, and eventually, balding spots started to appear on my scalp.
For me personally, the lack of hair didnt bother me too much. However, it was concerning when people asked about my receding hairline and thinning hair especially since I wasnt balding like in my fathers family or even going gray like both sides of my mothers family. Luckily after a while, the symptoms started to disappear and my hair grew back. It could have just been a coincidence, but Im confident the creatine is to blame for my temporary balding and eventual regrowth.

Awake Vs Asleep Surgery
Standard DBS surgery is performed while you are awake and requires that you stop taking the medicines that control your Parkinson’s symptoms. During surgery, you are asked to perform tasks to help guide the electrode to the precise location in the brain.
Being awake during brain surgery, or being off medicine, is unsettling for some people. Asleep DBS is an alternative option at some centers.
Asleep DBS surgery is performed while you are unconscious and under anesthesia. Surgery takes place in an MRI or CT scanner to target and verify accurate placement of your DBS electrodes. Ask your surgeon if asleep DBS is an option for you.

What Are The Surgical Treatments For Parkinsons Disease
Most patients with Parkinsons disease can maintain a good quality of life with medications. However, as the disease worsens, medications may no longer be effective in some patients. In these patients, the effectiveness of medications becomes unpredictable reducing symptoms during on periods and no longer controlling symptoms during off periods, which usually occur when the medication is wearing off and just before the next dose is to be taken. Sometimes these variations can be managed with changes in medications. However, sometimes they cant. Based on the type and severity of your symptoms, the failure of adjustments in your medications, the decline in your quality of life and your overall health, your doctor may discuss some of the available surgical options.

Medications That Cause Hair Loss In Females
Hormone therapies can trigger hormone imbalances in women, causing hair loss and potentially causing permanent female pattern baldness.
Birth control pills used for contraception and hormone replacement therapies , like progesterone and estrogen, are examples. Women who have undergone a full hysterectomy, for example, require ongoing HRT after surgery.
Symptoms Of Parkinsons Disease
The type, number, severity and progression of Parkinsons disease symptoms vary greatly. Every person is affected differently they may not get every symptom.
Some of the more common symptoms are:
- resting tremor
- blood pressure fluctuation
People living with Parkinsons for some time may experience hallucinations , paranoia and delusions . These symptoms are able to be treated so have a talk with your doctor.

What Exactly Is Creatine
It is basically a famous organic compound that stimulates Adenosine triphosphate recycling in the brain and muscles. It usually helps the cells and muscles of the brain to replace energy. In other words, ATP is the energy of the cell that generally is used by athletes to have extra energy during sports.
Creatine is famous among the athletes like rugby players, soccer, basketball players, etc. Alongside providing energy, creatine is associated with building muscle mass and is known for improving strength and performance. Many studies have also found that creatine supplements help people in preventing neurological disorders.
An impressive thing about creatine is that our body also produces creatine but in low levels to generate the energy spikes in our brain and muscles. Taking creatine supplements rises the amount of energy in our system that leads to many positive and also negative effects. Hair loss may be one of them, but before we jump on to the negative effects of creatine, heres how creatine affects our body positively:
Hair Loss Can Be A Sign Of Increased Stroke Risk
Claudia Chaves, MD, is board-certified in cerebrovascular disease and neurology with a subspecialty certification in vascular neurology. She is an associate professor of neurology at Tufts Medical School and medical director of the Lahey Clinic Multiple Sclerosis Center in Lexington, Massachusetts.
Patchy hair loss is a clue that you could potentially have an increased risk of stroke. A research study done in Taiwan showed a potential association between a condition called alopecia areata and stroke. In this study, individuals with alopecia areata had almost twice the risk of stroke when compared to people who did not have the condition.
Alopecia areata is very different from the usual hair loss patterns and is also much less common than the more prevalent types of hair loss. The hallmark of alopecia areata is bald spots and uneven hair loss.
It does not at all look like the usual male pattern baldness or a receding hairline that some men begin to experience as early as their twenties. Similarly, most women experience some degree of thinning hair, usually starting in the late thirties or early forties, but typically occurring gradually and distributed all over the head.

Living With Parkinsons Disease
Depending on severity, life can look very different for a person coping with Parkinsons Disease. As a loved one, your top priority will be their comfort, peace of mind and safety. Dr. Shprecher offered some advice, regardless of the diseases progression. Besides movement issues Parkinsons Disease can cause a wide variety of symptoms including drooling, constipation, low blood pressure when standing up, voice problems, depression, anxiety, sleep problems, hallucinations and dementia. Therefore, regular visits with a neurologist experienced with Parkinsons are important to make sure the diagnosis is on target, and the symptoms are monitored and addressed. Because changes in your other medications can affect your Parkinsons symptoms, you should remind each member of your healthcare team to send a copy of your clinic note after every appointment.
Dr. Shprecher also added that maintaining a healthy diet and getting regular exercise can help improve quality of life. Physical and speech therapists are welcome additions to any caregiving team.
