Singer Details His Condition And Makes Rare Appearance
Singer/songwriter Neil Diamond gave a surprise performance on the stage at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas last week. Diamond had retired from touring two years ago after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease .
Diamond performed at the 24th annual Keep Memory Alive’s Power of Love Gala benefit, where he was being honored. The Gala celebrates life and raises funds for the Cleveland Clinic’s Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. Diamond performed some of his greatest hits, such as “Hello Again,” “Forever in Blue Jeans,” “Cracklin’ Rosie,” “I Am … I Said,” and, of course, “Sweet Caroline,” which he sang alongside Billy Ray Cyrus, Sammy Hagar, Chris Isaak, Katlyn Nichol, and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds.
Diamond was diagnosed with PD in January 2018, during his 50 Year Anniversary World Tour. Although he feels no longer able to tour, he has continued to work on his health in the hope he would be able to get back on stage. He told the Associated Press:
“Well, I’m doing pretty well. I’m active. I take my meds. I do my workouts. I’m in pretty good shape. I’m feeling good. I want to stay productive … I just can’t do the traveling that I once did, but I have my wife there supporting me friends.”
“It does have its challenges, but I’m feeling good and I feel very positive about it. I’m feeling better every day. just dealing with it as best I can, and just keep the music coming.”

Ten other Diamond tunes cracked the Billboard Top 10 including Sweet Caroline, I Am, I Said, Heartlight, Cherry, Cherry, America and Girl, Youll Be A Woman Soon.
Diamonds songs have been performed by others as well, with Im A Believer topping the Billboard charts for The Monkees in 1966-67 and Red Red Wine hitting the top spot for UB40 in 1983.
Despite his success, Diamond said songwriting never came easily for him.

Legendary singer, songwriter and performer Neil Diamond announced earlier today that he would be retiring from touring due to his recent diagnosis of Parkinsons disease.
According to a press release given to E! News, the decision to stop touring is on his doctors’ advice. The “Sweet Caroline” singer was slated to begin the third leg of Diamonds 50th Anniversary tour this March in Australia and New Zealand.
“It is with great reluctance and disappointment that I announce my retirement from concert touring. I have been so honored to bring my shows to the public for the past 50 years,” said Diamond in a statement.
“My sincerest apologies to everyone who purchased tickets and were planning to come to the upcoming shows. I plan to remain active in writing, recording and other projects for a long time to come.”
The 76-year-old music man continued, “My thanks goes out to my loyal and devoted audiences around the world. You will always have my appreciation for your support and encouragement. This ride has been ‘so good, so good, so good’ thanks to you.”
Earlier this month, the Recording Academy announced Diamond as one of its Lifetime Achievement Award honorees.
The legendary performer and songwriter has sold more than 130 million albums worldwide. Performing for over 50 years, he’s had 38 Top 40 singles and 16 Top 10 albums.

The presence of Lewy bodies — clumps of specific abnormal proteins — also appear to be markers of Parkinson’s disease. Scientists are working to better understand their relationship to the disease.
Additionally, research has also shown that exposure to toxins, including herbicides and pesticides, may slightly increase the risk of Parkinson’s.
Men are also more likely to develop Parkinson’s than women. People typically develop the disease around 60 or older.
