Tips For Exercising Safely

Before starting an exercise program, consult with your neurologist and primary care doctor about any health concerns and ask for recommendations, the Parkinsons Foundation advises.

Ask your doctor to refer you to a physical therapist who knows about Parkinsons together, the two of you can identify any concerns and physical limitations you may have. Your exercise regimen should be targeted to address your symptoms and physical limitations.

You should stop any exercise or stretch that causes pain, and take steps to prevent falls while exercising, such as:

  • If indoors, remove area or throw rugs
  • Work out in well-lit areas
  • Dont use rolling chairs
  • Work out with friends or buddies, particularly when performing outdoor activities
  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid overexertion

IPP implantation involves a surgical procedure in which a prosthetic device is inserted inside the penis. This course of action is recommended for people in the chronic stages of PD who have ED as well.

This surgical intervention can correct penile curvature and sexual dysfunction. While it is possible for prosthetic implantation alone to resolve curvature issues, most people will need additional straightening procedures during the operation, such as penile modeling.

According to the APDA, exercising in water is a safe and effective way to improve balance and strength in people with Parkinsons disease. In general, the organization says, buoyancy from simply standing in the pool can help support weaker muscles and improve a persons balance and posture.

Swimming, or even performing some strength and flexibility exercises in the water with the water providing resistance enhances muscle tone, balance, and mobility with minimal stress on the body. The APDA offers a brochure with suggested aquatic exercise routines and general tips.

Parkinsons disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system, and it can impact an individuals emotional, mental, and physical health. There currently isnt a permanent cure for this disorder, but many seniors are able to minimize the symptoms with various pastimes, treatments, and hobbies. Heres a quick look at six therapeutic activities that are perfect for seniors with Parkinsons.

What Can We Do About It

While there may be no quick fixes for this, in my experience, it is possible to progressively improve matters, through daily diaphragm breathing exercises of the right kind. Due to faster disease progression and the myriad of other health issues associated with poor diaphragmatic breathing, I would recommend anyone with PD, but especially those newly diagnosed, to seek out gentle breathing techniques which they can personally work with, following Dr Fariass advice to avoid methods which try to force the diaphragm to move before it is ready, and commit to setting aside a little time each day to do the exercises. Two modalities Ive found personally beneficial are Dr Fariass own program of breathing exercises, which are tailored specifically for people with dystonia and PD, and a self-care technique called Block Therapy, developed by Deanna Hanson, which isnt specific to PD, but is designed to gently restore diaphragm function. Both of these only require a few minutes a day, every day, for improvements to slowly but surely accrue. However, note that these are generally part of paid-for online subscription courses, although Deanna has free resources explaining how to do the diaphragmatic breathing exercise part of Block Therapy.

Another modality that I am currently considering, as it may be helpful since it is also based on very gentle breathing exercises, is the Buteyko Method.

Relaxation With Guided Imagery

During guided imagery, a person is given ideas and images to mentally focus on while they are relaxing and breathing deeply.5

One study evaluated the benefit of relaxation with guided imagery in people with PD. Researchers found that the tremor from PD is more pronounced during stress. During the study, some people were given guided imagery meditations. Others listened to relaxing music. A third group was encouraged to self-relax.5

The group of people who experienced the guided meditation all had a decrease in their tremor. The improvement continued for several hours. The group of people who listened to relaxing music had a slightly reduced tremor. The group who self-relaxed had no significant effect on their tremor. These findings suggest that guided imagery can supplement traditional medical treatment for tremor in people with PD.5

Which Types Of Exercise Are Best For Parkinsons

It is important to state upfront that there is no one best type of exercise for people with PD. It is most important to choose an exercise regimen that you enjoy, and will continue to do.

However, beyond doing exercise that you will stick with, there are some additional concepts to consider when designing an exercise program for someone with PD.

How Physical Therapy Can Help


A physical therapist will complete a thorough evaluation of your mobility including balance, walking, strength, and endurance. In-person and virtual sessions will be scheduled to help assist with your rehabilitation journey.

A physical therapist can help with:

  • education and self-management advice
  • exercise routines to improve balance, walking, prevention of falls and what to do if you fall
  • mobility around the house and community
  • using assistive devices for mobility such as canes, walkers, or hiking poles
  • Freezing what to do and prevention
  • cognitive executive function
  • musculoskeletal pain, such as lower back and shoulder pain

Strength Training Helps Build Muscle Mass

Strength training can involve lifting weights, using machines at the gym, using your own body weight for resistance, or even using common household items like a milk jug filled with sand, the Parkinsons Foundation notes. Your strength training should focus on the following muscle groups:

  • Core muscles
  • Arm muscles
  • Hands and wrists

In general, strength training should be done two to three times per week, but scheduled so that youre not targeting the same muscles on consecutive days, as your muscles need to rest and recover, the foundation advises.

As with stretching exercises, strength training can be performed while standing, sitting, or while on the ground.

The Wisconsin Parkinson Association recommends several exercises to help strengthen your grip and improve your reach. Tasks such as handwriting and reaching for items on higher shelves can be a challenge for people with Parkinsons disease, and hand exercises can help minimize these issues.

In general, resistance training helps build and maintain muscle mass, Subramanian says. The stronger you are, the more independent youll be.

Stretching And Flexibility Exercises Help Keep You Limber

The Parkinsons Foundation says that stretching and flexibility exercises should be the first step in your exercise program. These exercises help offset the muscle rigidity that comes with Parkinsons disease, and people who are more flexible tend to have an easier time with everyday movements like walking, the Parkinsons Foundation adds.

Although theres no standard stretching regimen for people with Parkinsons, the Foundation suggests:

  • Performing stretching routines lasting at least 10 minutes at a time
  • Stretching at least three to four times per week
  • Holding stretches for 10 to 30 seconds and performing three to four repetitions of each stretch
  • Breathing evenly in and out during each stretch
  • Not stretching to the point of pain instead, each stretch should feel like a gentle pull

In addition, a flexibility program should focus on areas of the body most affected by symptoms, including the chest wall, shoulders, elbows, back of the thighs and knees, calves, wrists and palms, lower back, and neck.

Stretches and flexibility exercises can be performed while seated or lying down, to avoid strain on your muscles and fatigue.

Choosing The Right Exercise Class For Parkinsons

When trying to find an exercise class to join, it can be hard to know which ones to try because there are many different types of classes that are marketed to people with PD. When you are evaluating a class, it is important to remember the following:

  • It is the components of the exercise class that are important . You do not need to specifically do boxing or dance if you can achieve these elements of exercise in other ways.
  • The instructor should have expertise in PD. APDA offers a training for fitness professionals which helps them better understand how to create exercise programs best suited for people with PD.
  • The ratio of class members to instructors should be low enough to maintain safety.
  • The class should be adaptable for people of different abilities and mobility. Many classes will offer seated options or other modifications.

It may take a few tries to find the types of exercise that suits you best so dont give up! Feel free to try different classes in your area to see what types of exercise appeal to you. It can also be motivating to take classes together with a friend or family member. You can hold each other accountable, and also have some fun together.
