Recipes For Parkinson’s Patients

A Ruledme Keto Diet Vs A Low

How to Treat Parkinson’s Disease | Healthy Recipes

In this randomized controlled trial, 47 patients were selected and 38 of them completed the 8-week dietary protocol. 20 of the patients who completed the study were on the low-fat diet, and 18 followed the keto diet.

Each diet plan was designed to provide similar calorie and protein content. The primary differences between the two diets were in carb, fat, and fiber content.

To give you a better idea of each diet, heres a chart with the average macronutrient and calorie intake of each group:

Low-fat Diet
33 11

However, this was not a controlled feeding trial where every piece of food was measured precisely before consumption, so it is highly unlikely that the subjects ate the recommended amount.

The study followed a more realistic dietary change protocol including 4week diet plans including weekly shopping lists, daily menus, and simple, satisfying recipes. Along with the diet plan, each subject received tips on how to stay on the diet and troubleshoot common issues.

To help them craft a legitimate keto diet plan that is both satisfying and healthy, the researchers reached out to us, and we provided them with some of our most popular Ruled.me keto recipes and other diet tips, which they used as the basis for their keto diet meal plan.

In essence, the researchers created an abridged version of our Keto Academy for their Parkinsons disease patients. If youd like to take a look at the keto meal plan and information that each subject received, follow this link.

What Foods Have Dopamine To Prevent Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a devastating diagnosis, because while the illness is treatable, it is not curable. Parkinson’s disease is marked by progressive degradation of the nervous system, which results in symptoms including tremors, muscle stiffness, slow movements, impaired balance and changes in speech. Dopamine, a chemical produced in your brain, may have promise for treating already diagnosed Parkinson’s disease, and it may also help prevent it, although it has not been studied widely. Adding certain foods to your diet may increase your levels of dopamine, thus protecting your brain from changes that can lead to Parkinson’s disease. Always consult your doctor before changing your diet, and do not stop taking any medicines your doctor has advised for health problems.

If you are experiencing serious medical symptoms, seek emergency treatment immediately.

Important Supplements That May Help

Once you stop putting toxins into your body and eat clean, the trillions of cells in your body will be able to start living normally again. Eating the right foods and taking the necessary supplements will now begin to boost your brain health and healing.

Here are some supplements that will speed up the reversal of PD symptoms:

  • Magnesium: First and foremost on the list is magnesium. Low intake of this mineral magnesium, enables the deposition of excess calcium, heavy metals and toxins in the brain that leads to Parkinsons and Alzheimers diseases. When there is adequate presence of magnesium, heavy metals cannot be absorbed in the small intestines. Magnesium plays a vital role in protecting neurons from the lethal effects of aluminium and mercury poisoning.
  • B vitamins: A deficiency in vitamins B9 and B12 can cause brain problems that will initially manifest as depression, anxiety or even psychosis. The other B vitamins are useful for protecting against age-related brain wasting, and possibly prevent memory loss.
  • Glutathione: Glutathione is the mother of all antioxidants and is powerful in neutralizing free radicals damage and greatly reduce oxidative stress that destroy neurons.
  • Grape seed extract: Has super antioxidant effect that reduces DNA fragmentation in the brain. It is able to cross into the brain to protect brain cells from free radical damage.

The Heart Of Your Home

A diagnosis of Parkinsons doesnt mean you need to redesign your entire kitchen, but a few changes can help make it a lot more accessible. If you have space, a kitchen table provides a potentially more comfortable food prep space than taller countertops. Sometimes a simple change from standing to sitting, so you have more arm support, makes all the difference, says Julia Wood, an occupational therapist specializing in Parkinsons at the University of Pennsylvania.

She also recommends reorganizing so things are more reachable: Move the most frequently used items between shoulder and knee level, Wood says. Lesser-used items can be stashed up high or down low. If your care team has given you the all clear to climb stools, get a sturdy one with a handle. Coley rearranged the storage space in her own kitchen and has found its made a big difference.

If you do need to replace an appliance, its a great strategy to look to buy something that increases your accessibility, Wood says. Consider your current and potential future symptoms. Some people feel unsteady reaching up to a front-opening wall oven, especially if they are also holding a casserole dish. A side-opening oven or one with French doors may be more comfortable.

Your Culinary Tool Kit

Cooking tools and tableware matter too. Coley found that delicate stemmed wine glasses no longer worked for her. I replaced them with heavier-duty stemless. I dont break these as I put them in the dishwasher, she says. We use a lot more plastic bowls and drinking vessels these days, Coley says. Wood recommends minimizing glass to her Parkinsons patients as well. Theres so much great shatterproof melamine now, she says.

Gradually, Coley has updated kitchen tools. She now uses an electric can opener and a handy jar opener. To whisk eggs, shes switched from a balloon whisk to a hand-cranked egg beater thats easier to managefor now. I know I may need to switch again to a handheld electric mixer if turning the crank gets hard or the stand mixer becomes too heavy, she says.

Because grasping things can be difficult, Wood suggests using tools with big, soft handles. I like Oxo, she says. If you love your current kitchen gizmos, adding tube grips or layering the handles with Dycem nonslip tape can make them easier to work with.

Difficulty gripping items might make a person with Parkinsons justifiably nervous about using a chefs knife. All cooks have cut themselves in a moment of lapsed attention. But with Parkinsons, you might use your food processor more often, depending on your symptoms at a given moment. Though she can still work with a knife, Coley uses a food processor at times. Some people use a cut-resistant glove or a slap-chop type device, Wood says.

Forget Fava Beans For Parkinsons

Fava beans contain an amino acid known as levodopa. Levodopa is an active ingredient in some Parkinsons medications. Seems like a good reason to eat a lot of fava beans, right?

Nope. Dr. Gostkowski explains that the amount in the beans is tiny compared to whats in your medication. You cant eat enough fava beans to have any effect on your symptoms, he says.

Bananas also have levodopa in them, Dr. Gostkowski says. But, like fava beans, its not possible to eat enough bananas to affect PD symptoms. Of course, if you like fava beans or bananas, enjoy! But dont go overboard or expect them to work like medication. Eat a variety of fruits, veggies, legumes and whole grains for balance.

Bump Up Your Fiber Intake

A high-fiber diet is a proven way to avoid constipation, a common problem for people with PD.

Parkinsons can slow down the intestines and cause constipation, Dr. Gostkowski says. Fiber helps keep things moving. There are plenty of high-fiber foods out there, so choose your favorites. Women should aim for 25 grams of fiber per day, and men should get 38 grams.

Unplanned Weight Loss Or Weight Gain

Breakfast Ideas for Parkinson Patient With Swallowing Disorder

The medications that people with Parkinsons disease usually take can cause the side effects of either loss of appetite or an increase in hunger . This can then lead to unintentional weight gain or weight loss both of which can cause issues to health.

As well as looking at the specific macronutrient distribution of the ketogenic diet, one must also be mindful of the calorie content.

Furthermore, as ketone bodies increase, they can elicit a natural appetite suppressing effect so further care must be taken to ensure adequate calories are consumed.

Some individuals with Parkinsons Disease have also reported that they have developed specific food aversions to proteins such as meats, dairy, and eggs. This could make the selection of foods a little bit trickier. Sometimes a change in the way that the protein is cooked has been shown to help with this. However, if changing how the food is prepared doesnt work, you can find other keto-friendly suggestions in our guide to the vegan ketogenic diet.

Parkinsons Recipe For Recovery

My goal with this entry is to cover in detail what I did to recover. Please note: I did not take any medications, nor did I take herbal supplements, herbal formulas, or Ayurvedic formulas. My recovery was predicated on a combination of soul, mind and body healing. As you know, I am not a doctor, and I do not recommend that you do anything that I did to recover without first receiving approval from your doctor, and from your religious and spiritual advisors. That being said, I am going to begin with my philosophy of Parkinsons Disease so you can understand why I feel I got it and how I approached getting rid of it. Without this background, much of what I did will make no sense to you.

For about a decade prior to getting Parkinsons, I had been studying Traditional Chinese Medicine and other forms of holistic healing. I concluded that there are underlying factors that make a person susceptible to getting Parkinsons. However, the three main causes that bring Parkinsons to the surface as diagnosable symptoms are:

1. Qi and Blood Deficiency, which is caused by emotional stress, anger, frustration, and resentment.2. Phlegm-Fire Agitating Wind, which is caused by dietary considerations such as consumption of too much greasy, fried or sweet foods.3. Kidney and Liver Wind, Deficiency, which is caused by overwork and insufficient rest which unbalances the bodys natural rhythm.

Here is an example so maybe you can understand better about the body healing itself:
