Peppers Contain A Chemical That May Help Fight Parkinsons Disease
The Solanaceae family is a plant family that contains the chemical nicotine. According to the researchers for this study, dietary sources of nicotine may be what provides the protection against Parkinsons disease. Peppers, tomatoes, and potatoes all contain small quantities of nicotine.
But Susan Searles Nielsen, PhD, the studys lead author and a research scientist in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, says further research is needed to confirm this, as high quantities of nicotine can have adverse health consequences like addictiveness, poisoning, and death. Searles Nielsen says there is a chance that a similar but less toxic chemical in peppers may be equally or more protective against Parkinsons disease than nicotine.

Eating To Ease Symptoms
For some Parkinson’s symptoms, the first step in treatment is to adjust your diet.
- Constipation: Drinking more fluids and eating more fiber can help maintain regularity. Aim to drink six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. Warm liquids, especially in the morning, can stimulate bowel movements. Dietary sources of fiber consist of fruits , vegetables, legumes, whole grain breads and cereals. Most of these are high in antioxidants, as well.

A Vegetarian Diet And Parkinson’s Disease
While research has failed to conclusively show a link betweendiet and PD, nevertheless, the fiber, protein, and nutrients foundparticularly in plants are excellent reasons to choose among thevarious vegetarian and plant-based eating plans. Animal foods areoften high in protein and lack fiber, whereas plants generally havea high proportion of carbohydrate and moderate amounts of protein.Plants also contain fiber and many phytochemicals, which animalproducts do not.
Fiber. A plant-based diet is generally richer in fiber,which can alleviate constipation and thereby reduce risk for fecalimpaction and colorectal cancer. In a pilot study, McIntosh andHolden found that while 21 out of 24 patients reported frequentconstipation, analysis of three day food diaries showed that 18patients reported intake of fewer than 25 grams of dietary fiberdaily . Education in the need for greaterfiber intake, and its benefits to health, is necessary for PDpatients. Additionally, a high-fiber eating plan may promotebioavailability of levodopa. Astarloa et al. found a correlationbetween a diet rich in insoluble fiber and plasma levodopaconcentration, and postulate that the improvement of constipationmay have a positive effect upon levodopa availability . While there is no research as yet on benefits of avegetarian diet for people with PD, it appears possible that thehigher fiber content of a vegetarian or plantbased diet may behelpful for people with PD.

Reducing Red Meat Consumption
However, its not only about the foods included in the Mediterranean diet, but also about those that get minimized. For instance, the Mediterranean diet emphasizes a rare consumption of red meat.
While more research is needed, some studies show an association between high red meat intake and incidence of Parkinsons disease. It has been speculated that the improper digestion of the heme content, specifically found in red meat, may increase free radical production, ultimately leading to mitochondrial damage.6
What Causes Parkinsons Disease
The exact cause of Parkinsons remains unknown although several factors have been identified that are believed to be linked to the disease:
Approximately 15% of sufferers have a family history of Parkinsons disease, but it has not been proven whether this is due to genetic or environmental factors. Environmental factors such as toxins may play a part in the neurons ability to produce dopamine.
Another theory suggests that neurons die because of the aging process or due to exposure to free radicals. The following factors increase your risk of Parkinsons disease aging, gender , high stress levels, head trauma, exposure to environmental toxins and a high fat diet containing trans fats.

If you have Parkinsons, every healthy lifestyle change can help. Choosing to eat well also leads to a feeling of empowerment that helps you in your daily life with PD. While it can be challenging to eat better, most people make minor diet changes gradually that become major changes over time. Always consult your physician before making major changes.
Eat Plenty Of Protein But Not With Levodopa Medications
If youre taking a levodopa medication, your doctor may tell you to avoid protein when taking your meds. Both animal and plant protein can interfere with the absorption of levodopa medications.
But you should still eat plenty of protein. Just be strategic with the timing. Dont take levodopa medications with meals, Dr. Gostkowski says. Its best to take it on an empty stomach either 30 minutes before your meal or an hour after eating.
If you get nauseous from the medication, eat a small amount of starchy food with it, such as crackers. Make sure whatever you eat with your medicine doesnt have protein. Its a misunderstanding that people with Parkinsons should avoid protein, Dr. Gostkowski says. You definitely need protein in your diet. Just dont eat it when youre taking your levodopa medication.

Dr. John Duda, MD, national director of the Parkinsons Disease Research, Education, and Clinical Center for the Department of Veteran Affairs and associate professor of neurology at the University of Pennsylvanias Perelman School of Medicine, says, the best evidence out there suggests that a whole-food, plant-based dieta Mediterranean dietis best for long-term health and wellness. The evidence is clear that adopting this type of diet will reduce your risk of dementia, depression, constipation, and a whole host of other things that will help you in the long run. A diet full of fiber and full of plant-based nutrients that include a whole host of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory molecules could help protect your brain. Thats the diet I recommend.

Can Eating Well Alter The Course Of Pd
Scientists know a lot about the molecular changes that underlie Parkinsons. You may have heard of alpha-synuclein, the protein that forms clumps in brain cells, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and inflammation. The search is intense for therapies that can stop or reverse these processes. Can nutrition or dietary choices do anything to change them or alter the course of PD?
Some laboratory and animal research suggest that diet could have an effect, especially plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds. Every plant-based food contains hundreds of chemicals called phytochemicals. These are not nutrients, but substances that may, alone or in combination, affect many of the processes thought to be involved in PD including oxidation, chronic inflammation, protein aggregation and mitochondrial dysfunction.
Phytochemicals have not been proven to change disease progression in people with PD, but neither is there typically any harm in eating a diet that includes whole, unprocessed plants. This diet has proven benefits for preventing heart and vascular disease and can reduce PD symptoms, like constipation and risk of cognitive change.
The Nature Of Parkinsons Disease
Parkinsons disease afflicts about one to one and one-half million people in the United States . PD is a progressive neurological disorder that results in the death of dopamine-producing cells in the brain. Loss of dopamine affects movement, both of skeletal muscle and the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract. This can result in slow, shuffling gait, resting tremor, and/or slowed peristalsis. Individuals with PD may experience frequent falls , d ifficulty handling cooking and eating utensils, and such GI-related problems as slow stomach emptying, gastroesophageal reflux, and chronic constipation .

Broader Health Ramifications Of Mitophagy Upregulation
A more general thesis that might be derived from these considerations is that vegan diets of modest protein content may help to minimize oxidative stress of mitochondrial origin by upregulating mitophagy. Hence, such diets may be protective in the range of disorders in which mitochondrial oxidative stress plays a pathogenic rolePD being a notable case in point. Intriguingly, Parkin can protect the heart from ischemia-reperfusion damage by promoting ubiquitination and degradation of cyclophilin-D the latter is required for the formation of mitochondrial permeability transition pores, which precipitates cardiomyocyte necrosis during cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury . Moreover, studies employing the phosphatase inhibitor salubrinal, which upregulates the phosphorylation of eIF2, find that this drug provides protection in cardiac and cerebral ischemia-reperfusion, cardiac hypertrophy, hypoxic pulmonary hypertension, and brain trauma the extent to which ATF4 and/or Parkin contribute to these benefits remains to be evaluated. In any case, these results suggest that moderately protein vegan diets, via activation of GCN2 and consequent phosphorylation of eIF2, may be protective in these syndromes.
Managing Pd Symptoms With Diet
Research supports these strategies for managing the following PD symptoms and medication side effects:
Fluctuations. Some people who take levodopa notice that their medication is less effective when taken with a high-protein meal . To address this difficulty, your doctor may recommend taking levodopa 30 minutes before, or 60 minutes after, you eat. Thats because levodopa is absorbed into the digestive system by the same route as protein when taken together, both compete to be absorbed into the body.
Even after adjusting medication timing, some people still have difficulty absorbing it. This can lead to fluctuations the levodopa wears off too soon or you experience changes throughout the day between the medicine working well and not having any benefit at all.
A protein-redistribution diet is a popular solution for fluctuations. That means eating most of your daily protein at dinnertime the last meal of the day to minimize Sinemet interference during most of the rest of the day. In research studies, fluctuations improved in about 80 percent of people who made this dietary change. People who benefitted most were those who started the regimen early in the course of their PD, before fluctuations became severe.
Iron also can prevent your body from taking up levodopa medications. Do not take iron supplements or multivitamins with iron within two hours of Sinemet.

All Physicians Should Know The Benefits Of Plant
A new commentary in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine says that all physicians should be aware of the benefits of a plant-based diet for six health conditions: weight loss and maintenance, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and COVID-19.
“The field of medicine, despite its prominent influence in society, has invested little to promote healthy lifestyle choices,” says the commentary co-authored by Saray Stancic, MD, FACLM, director of medical education for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. “The consequence of this is reflected in our ever-rising chronic disease statistics, most notably obesity and diabetes rates.”
Part of the problem, say the authors, is that “medical schools offer an anemic number of hours of nutrition education over 4 years,” which does not improve in postgraduate training. They note than in a recent survey of more than 600 cardiologists, 90% reported they had not received needed nutrition education during training.
The commentary acknowledges that not all physicians must be experts in nutrition, but says that they should at least have rudimentary knowledge of the benefits of a plant-based diet for these six conditions, for which they provide detailed evidence, including the following:
