Early Life And Career
Tipton was born on 25 October 1947, in Blackheath, Staffordshire, to Olive and Doug Tipton. He attended Olive Hill Primary School when he was about five years old. His brother, Gary, was a guitar player for a local band called the Atlantics. Early on, Tipton was taught to play the piano by his mother.
Tipton learned to play guitar at age 19 with his first guitar being a Hofner acoustic guitar. He would then play on a Rickenbacker until he was able to afford a Fender Stratocaster. This guitar would become his main live guitar until it was stolen at a show. Tipton soon bought a black Stratocaster and, later, a Gibson SG afterwards with money he received to replace his old guitar. Both of these guitars can be seen when Judas Priest played on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1975.
Tipton lives in the village of Romsley, Worcestershire, in the West Midlands near Birmingham, England, and has a state-of-the-art recording studio built next to his home. During the 1980s he also bought a property in Spain. He is or was married and has two childrenKarina and Rickborn in 1981 and 1986, respectively, both of whom were featured on his solo album Baptizm of Fire. Tipton and former Judas Priest bandmate K.K. Downing are long-time tennis players and also both of them took up golf during an early 1980s American tour with Def Leppard.

Tipton stepped back from touring with the band in 2018 after the progression of his Parkinson’s disease left him unable to perform live
Judas Priests Rob Halford has shared a new photo of himself reuniting with the bands ailing lead guitarist Glenn Tipton.
Tipton announced in 2018 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinsons disease and would be sitting out of the metal bands Firepower world tour. He was diagnosed four years earlier but doctors informed him that he had been living with the condition at least half a decade before that.
According to a statement released by the band at the time, the diseases progression left him unable to play the Judas Priests more complex material. He was replaced by Firepower producer Andy Sneap.
Earlier today , Halford took to Instagram to share a pic of he and Tipton, seemingly taken at one of their respective homes in the UK as they prepare to celebrate the festive season with their families.
Merry metal motivational, Halford captioned the image, which sees the pair posing in front of a Christmas tree, with Tipton giving a thumbs up and Halford throwing up the horns. You can see the post below.

JUDAS PRIEST singer Rob Halford says that the band’s Parkinson’s disease-suffering guitarist Glenn Tipton is “a wonderfully strong, beautiful man” who is continuing to fight against the illness.
Tipton was diagnosed with Parkinson’s more than six years ago after being stricken by the condition at least half a decade earlier but announced in early 2018 he was going to sit out touring activities in support of PRIEST‘s latest album, “Firepower”. He was replaced by “Firepower” album producer Andy Sneap, who is also known for his work in NWOBHM revivalists HELL and cult thrash outfit SABBAT. Tipton occasionally joins PRIEST onstage for its encores, performing “Metal Gods”, “Breaking The Law” and “Living After Midnight”.
Asked for an update on Tipton‘s health, Halford told BBC Sounds: “He’s a wonderfully strong, beautiful man. And before this horrible pandemic closed everything down, we were working over at Glenn‘s, writing material for the next PRIEST album, which will come out when it’s ready we still have a long ways to go. But we were there, and Glenn was making contributions. He can still play the guitar, albeit in his own particular way.
“Incidentally, he has this wonderful Glenn Tipton Parkinson’s Foundation. We’ve raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for Glenn over the years, and we’re still continuing to do that. Some of the advances that they have in Parkinson’s now are extraordinary, but the funds and the finance to keep searching are vital.

The Glenn Tipton Parkinson’s Foundation
Glenn has expressed his gratitude to supporters who helped raise more than US $150,000 for his Parkinsons charity the Glenn Tipton Parkinsons Foundation.
The foundation was launched in June 2018, four months after Glenn announced his Parkinsons diagnosis in February 2018. All proceeds will support the development of MR-guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy a pioneering treatment for essential tremor in people with Parkinsons.
After making a comeback performance at The Sweden Rock Festival in June 2018, Glenn wrote on the bands website: When I walk on stage the audience reaction has been amazing, heartwarming and quite emotional.

Judas Priest Launches Parkinsons Foundation In Honor Of Glenn Tipton
Judas Priest has announced the start of the “Glenn Tipton Parkinson’s Foundation” which will raise funds for many Parkinson’s-related charities in honor of guitarist Glenn Tipton, who had to step down from participating in the band’s Firepower Tour full-time due to his own battle with the disease.
In a statement released by Tipton on behalf of the band, “Rob, Richie, Ian and Scott are playing better than ever and Andy is doing a really great job – they have all given me so much support – It was the band that suggested we start a foundation which although in my name is really a Judas Priest foundation.”
Judas Priest will be selling t-shirts of Tipton with the phrase “No Surrender,” a track from their new album, Firepower, on the back. 100% of the proceeds will go towards a new treatment called “MR Guided Focused Ultrasound Thalomotomy,” which has seen great success treating Parkinson’s patients. Rob Halford Updates Glenn Tiptons Current Status After His Parkinsons Disease Diagnoses
Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford recently attended an interview on the Mariskal Rock TV YouTube channel and opened up about his bandmate Glenn Tipton. He talked about how Tipton is an important member of the band, and his disease doesnt change that.
Parkinsons disease is one of the illnesses that limit the persons ability to walk, talk, perform simple physical tasks, along with causing unstable behavior and mental diseases like depression and memory loss.
Unfortunately, the disease got a hold of the lead guitarist of Judas Priest in 2008. Glenn Tipton announced in 2018 that he was diagnosed with Parkinsons and began suffering its effects. It made it difficult for a guitarist like him to perform complex music, but he refused to get the help of another guitarist or use backing tracks.
The guitarist still has immense contributions to the band in terms of story writing, but his illness still obstructs him from performing as he used to. His bandmate Richie Faulkner updated the fans about Tiptons condition in 2020 and had stated that he was doing fine, but the effects of the disease are cruel, and the pandemic is not helping his mental health.
Rob Halford said about Glenn Tipton:
Glenn can still play the guitar, he plays it differently, but he can still play. He walked out with us at Bloodstock recently, Metal Gods,Breaking the Law. He can play. So hell be on the next album. Whatever work he does, hes valuable, really important.

Glenn Tipton’s Daughter To Raise Money For Judas Priest Guitarist’s Foundation At Barcelona Marathon
Karina Greenin, the daughter of JUDAS PRIEST guitarist Glenn Tipton, will take part in Barcelona, Spain’s annual marathon next month to raise funds for the Glenn Tipton Parkinson’s Foundation.
JUDAS PRIEST launched Glenn Tipton Parkinson’s Foundation last June in honor of the musician, who is suffering from the degenerative neurological disorder.
Earlier this week, Karina started a GoFundMe campaign to allow PRIEST fans and others to donate online. As of presstime Friday, it has raised £2,136 of its £2,500 goal.
In her introductory message, she wrote: “As many of you know, my Dad has Parkinson’s. It affects so many aspects of his life, and sadly has recently forced him to retire from full-time touring . My Dad is ever the fighter and has an amazing positive attitude trying to battle this cruel disease. JUDAS PRIEST have set up ‘The Glenn Tipton Parkinson’s Foundation‘ in his honour, all proceeds raised from the foundation will go directly to a ‘pioneering new treatment called MR guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy which although in its early stages has already had great success with a Parkinson’s related condition called essential tremor.’ Dad is keen to make a difference to help other people fighting the disease, and I’d love to support him. The guitarist, who is now 70 and has performed on every PRIEST record since the band’s 1974 debut set, “Rocka Rolla”, is not quitting the band, but simply cannot handle the rigorous challenges of performing live. He is being replaced on tour by “Firepower” album producer Andy Sneap, also known for his work as the guitar player in NWOBHM revivalists HELL and cult thrash outfit SABBAT.
In a statement announcing the formation of the Glenn Tipton Parkinson’s Foundation, Glenn said: “As you probably know by now, I’ve had to pull out of the current PRIEST tour due to ill health. I am still doing some shows and joining the guys on stage for some songs and will carry on for as long as I can without compromising the band. So far, when I walk on stage, the audience reaction has been amazing, heartwarming and quite emotional.
“I knew that something was wrong as my coordination and speed were affected and have both been slowly getting worse over the last ten years. Accordingly, when I was diagnosed, it wasn’t really a shock.

Judas Priest have launched the Glenn Tipton Parkinsons Foundation in honour of their legendary guitarist who is battling Parkinsons disease.
Back in February, Glenn retired from touring with Judas Priest and announced to fans hes been battling the disease for several years. He has since gone on to guest perform with the heavy metallers at a number of North American tour dates.
Announcing the launch of the Foundation, Glenn said in a statement: “It was the band that suggested we start a foundation which, although in my name, is really a Judas Priest foundation.”
All proceeds raised from the foundation will go directly to a “pioneering new treatment called MR guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy which although in its early stages has already had great success with a Parkinson’s related condition called essential tremor.”
In the first initiative to raise money for the foundation, the band are selling a T-shirt emblazoned with a classic image of Glenn Tipton on the front and the words No Surrender a track on March 2018s Firepower on the back together with Judas Priests logo.

Judas Priest has raised over $150,000 for Glenn Tipton Parkinsons Foundation which was established last June when the guitarist opened up about his battle with Parkinsons disease. The money was raised through charity t-shirts, donations and more. The foundation will use the donations on a new treatment called MR-guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy, which, although in its early stages, has already had great success with a Parkinsons-related condition called essential tremor.
