  • University of Missouri researchers have found that resveratrol, a natural chemical found in various fruits and vegetables, can help to block the effects of methamphetamine, a dangerous and addictive drug.

The study was conducted by Associate Professor of Psychological Sciences Dennis Miller and colleagues from the Center for Translational Neuroscience.1 They focused on the role the neurotransmitter dopamine plays in drug addiction, particularly methamphetamine use.1 When people use methamphetamine, a surge of dopamine is released.1 Over time, repeated methamphetamine use can cause the dopamine receptors in the brain to degenerate, leading to behavioral changes and neurological impairments that are similar to those associated with Parkinsons disease.1

Resveratrol has been shown to regulate dopamine neurons in the treatment of Parkinsons disease therefore, researchers used the protocols established by Parkinsons research to test whether the natural compound affected dopamine levels in methamphetamine users.1

The researchers hope that these results will encourage physicians and rehabilitation centers to treat methamphetamine addicts by adding resveratrol to their treatment regimen.1 The natural compound could decrease the addicts craving for the drug, making it easier for them to overcome addiction.1

How To Deal With Parkinsons Disease

Parkinsons disease belongs to a group of conditions known as extra pyramidal symptoms and is characterized by stiffness of the muscles and continuous tremors. This is accompanied by reduced physical movement or bradykinesia and in severe cases complete loss of movement or akinesia. An individual suffering from Parkinsons disease exhibits a combination of involuntary tremor of the limbs and muscular stiffness.

The tremors become more prominent when the patient is in a resting position and tend to disappear when he attempts to move or is asleep. The tremors are most pronounced when the patient becomes excited or is fatigued. Older patients often exhibit involuntary rapid jerking movements of the limbs and may also exhibit purposeless mastication and lip smacking movements. This is followed by impaired speech, muscle cramps, inability to move and loss of judgment.

    Medical Cannabis In Germany

In Germany, patients can acquire THC-rich medicinal cannabis products with a prescription when other conventional therapies are unsuccessful in treating the condition or are not well-tolerated.

Cannabidiol products are available from pharmacies and internet sites without a prescription.

Lead investigator Prof. Dr. med. Carsten Buhmann says that Germany began permitting medical cannabis in 2017 when approval was obtained for therapy-resistant symptoms in severely affected patients, independent of diagnosis and lacking evidence-based clinical data.

PD patients fulfilling these criteria are entitled to be prescribed medical cannabis, but there are few data about which type of cannabinoid and which route of administration might be promising for which PD patient and which symptoms, says Buhmann. We also lack information about the extent to which the PD community is informed about medicinal cannabis and whether they have tried cannabis and, if so, with what result.

Buhmanns team conducted the cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey with members of the German Parkinson Association, reportedly the largest group of PD patients in German-speaking countries with approximately 21,000 members.

Investigators distributed surveys at their clinic, and GPA included copies with its membership journal in April 2019.

Investigators focused on assessing patient perceptions of medical cannabis and evaluating the experiences of those already using it.

How Can It Help In Parkinson’s

Ayurvedic (Indian Herbal Medicine) Management of Parkinson’s Disease

The effects of herbal medicine in Parkinsons are largely untested with the exception of preliminary studies into Ayurveda – an ancient Indian healing system that combines a variety of interventions including herbal remedies.

Mucuna plants, which are used in Ayurveda herbal treatments, are known to contain levodopa – a key Parkinsons medication that increases dopamine levels in the brain and therefor improves the motor symptoms of the condition. Several studies into mucuna plants and Parkinsons have had positive results and some have even suggested that the plant might have advantages over conventional levodopa preparations in the long term management of Parkinsons. However, a rigorous clinical study into this is needed.

A qualified herbal practitioner will be able to advise on other remedies, for example nervine herbs to reduce tremors, or vascular dilators to relax rigid muscles. Some herbs may help with skin conditions.

But remember that natural does not mean harmless, and some herbal treatments can have serious side effects and interfere with Parkinsons medications. Always talk with your doctor before taking any herbal medicines.

    Natural Supplements for Parkinson

KINGSTON There has been considerable buzz around the Bioactive Botanical Research Laboratory in the University of Rhode Islands College of Pharmacy lately. Researchers there have an ally in their quest to find a new treatment for Parkinsons disease the fruit fly.

Researchers led by neuroscience Ph.D. candidate Shelby Johnson and pharmacy professor Navindra Seeram are working with the insects to test the effectiveness of natural compounds as treatments for the neurodegenerative disease. They have been administering multiple compounds to the flies, including Equol, a gut microbial metabolite of certain isoflavones found in soybeans, which are known to act as plant-based estrogens. The flies have Parkinsons, either through genetic modification or exposure to toxins.

In Parkinsons, males have a higher incidence rate than females, and women have a higher chance of being diagnosed after menopause, Johnson said. So, theres this hypothesis of estrogen being protective, which drove us to look into plant-based estrogens.

Other compounds that could become treatments include a maple syrup extract, which Seeram has researched extensively to treat a host of ailments and an extract from the seeds of the Mucuna pruriens, a tropical legume, which is a natural source of L-dopa and has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda, a form of traditional medicine originating from the Indian subcontinent.

    What Are Parkinsons Natural Therapies

There are some natural therapies for Parkinsonism. Most of them are based on the assumption that the oxidative stress is the main reason that Dopamine is depleted in these patients, so they are all based on the antioxidative properties of many natural health products. Green tea was proved by research that it can slow down or ameliorate the signs and symptoms of Parkinsons disease as proved in this research published in the Scientific World Journal 2012 Intravenous Glutathione is another treatment that can be given for patients with Parkinsonism, that is based on creating an antioxidant environment to combat the oxidative stress inside the brain which is the main process involved in the Parkinsonism disease and hence could improve the disease symptoms.

This Antidepressant May Be No Better Than Cheaper Alternatives But Demand Could Soon Soar

Nuplazid, if given the FDA go-ahead, would undoubtedly cost far more than existing antipsychotics, which are mostly used to treat schizophrenia and are available as generics. In the pivotal trial behind Acadias marketing application, Nuplazid showed only modest improvements over placebo, and was tested in a way that makes it difficult to compare against other treatments.

Physicians involved in the trial stand by the drug, nonetheless.

Dr. Jeffrey Cummings, a neurologist at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas, said he was struck by some of the patients dramatic responses.

Of course, families will also respond to placebos, and thats why we dont approve drugs based on anecdotal reports, said Cummings, who has taken consulting fees from Acadia. But when families are saying this really made a difference for his life and our lives together, for me it was a pretty impressive study.

Parkinsons psychosis usually occurs in the latter stages of the disease, and generally involves nonthreatening visual hallucinations. Cynthia Hatfield, a 72-year-old former banker living in Westerly, R.I., several times a week sees a calico cat resembling one shed actually owned many years ago, and which her children named Mushroom. For years, her hallucinations included a menagerie of small animals.

Chipmunks and little squirrels and cats, and a little mouse would come out every once in a while, she said. I actually enjoy seeing them.

Treatment For Parkinsons Disease With Traditional Medications

To treat Parkinsons , its best to follow your Doctors guidance. The use of natural remedies and other alternatives not based on scientific evidence can be counterproductive.

Therefore, its best not to resort to them .

Heres eight of the main medications and therapies used in the treatment for Parkinsons disease according to most medical institutions:

Bioactive Molecules Derived From Parasitic Plants And Fungi

Cistanche salsa is a parasitic plant used as a Chinese traditional medicine containing acteoside, echinacoside, and tubuloside as its major phenylethanoid glycosides . C. salsa extracts containing these bioactive molecules have been shown to restore behavioral deficit and dopamine depletion in strata of MPTP induced C57 mice . They has also been demonstrated to protect dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra of PD model mice, which correlated with neurobehavior improvements and TH positive neuronal levels .

Gastrodia elata blume is a saprophytic perennial herb used traditionally as a medicine due to its wide range of therapeutic benefits. Protective effects of GE extract against MPP+-induced cytotoxicity in human dopaminergic SHSY-5Y cells demonstrated that GE extract dose dependently improved cell viability maintenance, attenuated oxidative damage, modulated expression of Bcl-2 and Bax, caspase-3, and limited poly polymerase proteolysis . Recently, MPP+ induced MN9D dopaminergic cells were shown to exhibit antiapoptotic effects following GE extract treatment. The v anillyl alcohol present in GE was considered to act by attenuating the MPP+ induced elevation of ROS levels and decreasing the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and poly polymerase .

    • How the product/provider is promoted. Be cautious if products or providers are promoted through: telemarketers direct mailings infomercials ads disguised as valid news articles ads in the back of magazines.
    • Big claims. If a provider or product claims to be a “cure” for Parkinson’s disease, or gives outrageous claims, be cautious.
    • Beware if the product is only being offered through one doctor or manufacturer.
    • Ingredients. Make sure all of the active ingredients are listed. Do not trust “secret formulas.”
    • Testimonials. Keep in mind that testimonials are only given by those who are satisfied with the product. And, if the ad says, “paid endorsement,” know that the person is getting compensated to say what the manufacturer wants them to say.

    Neuroprotective Effects Of Ornamental Plants

Paeoniae lactiflora is an ornamental flowering plant known for its dried root. Paeoniflorin , a monoterpene glucoside, is abioactive molecule produced by Paeoniae alba Radix and is reported to have a neuroprotective effect on dopaminergic neurons in an MPTP mouse model for PD. Dose dependent subcutaneous administration of PF restored TH positive cells, dopaminergic neuronal paucity, and ameliorated bradykinesia. The mechanism of action is due to PF acting as an agonist for the adenosine A1 receptor, which down regulates microglial and astrocytic activation and neuroinflammation .

Dendrobium nobile Lindl. is an ornamental medicinal plant in the Orchidacea family, which is rich in the bioactive benzyl compound chrysotoxine .

Chrysotoxine is reported to protect SHSY-5Y cells against 6-OHDA toxicity through mitochondrial protection and NF-B modulation. Chrysotoxine pretreatment exerts beneficial effects including attenuation of 6-OHDA- induced intracellular generation of ROS, and activation of p38 MAPK and ERK1/2. Mitochondrial dysfunction is reverted through multiple mechanisms including the decrease of membrane potential, increase of intracellular free Ca2+, release of cytochrome c, imbalance of Bax/Bcl- 2 ratio and decrease in activation of caspase-3. An anti- inflammatory for response is exerted by suppression of NF- B activation by blocking its translocation to the nucleus, thereby preventing up-regulation of iNOS and intracellular NO release .
