Gamma-aminobutyric acid, commonly called GABA, is an amino acid derivative that sends calming signals to your brain. At the time of publication, GABA is under study for use in the treatment of nerve disorders such as epilepsy and anxiety. Bodybuilders also use it to increase muscle growth. Doctors prescribe GABA in varying doses, but no safe dose has been established for taking GABA as a dietary supplement.

What Is Gaba How Does Gaba Work Where Can You Find It

GABA is classified as an inhibitory neurotransmitter due to its ability to block certain signals in the brain. GABA decreases activity in the central nervous system and binds with proteins in the brain known as GABA receptors, which creates a calming effect that helps ameliorate feelings of fear, stress, and anxiety. GABA may also help prevent seizures.

Because of these abilities, GABA has become a popular dietary supplement.

For those who want to know how to increase GABA naturally, GABA is found in oolong, black, and green tea, and fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, kefir, and tempeh. GABA production can be boosted by other foods, including nuts like almonds and walnuts, seafood like halibut and shrimp, whole grains, soy, beans, sunflower seeds, spinach, broccoli, fava, tomatoes, citrus fruits, berries, and cocoa.

Should You Supplement With The Amino Acid Gaba

Gamma aminobutyric acid is an amino acid that functions as a neurotransmitter in our brains. Low GABA levels are known to be associated with movement and anxiety disorders, so some people will take GABA supplements to help improve the function of their minds and central nervous systems. Read on to find out how GABA works, and whether or not it may be appropriate for you.

Gaba For Stress And Fatigue

In 2011 Japanese researchers found that consuming a beverage with either 25 or 50 milligrams of GABA resulted in reduced measurements of physical and mental fatigue during problem-solving tasks, with the higher dose being slightly more effective.

A 2009 study published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition showed that consuming chocolate containing 28 milligrams of GABA also reduced stress in participants as they performed a problem-solving test. Yet again in 2012, capsules with 100 milligrams of GABA led to reduced stress during the performance of a mental task. While these are small studies, they nevertheless appear to consistently show that GABA helps reduce stress and fatigue in human beings.

What Are The Odds

About half of people who take levodopa get dyskinesia. Your chance is higher if you:

  • Take levodopa in high doses or for a long time
  • Get Parkinsonâs when youâre younger
  • Have the akinetic-rigid type of Parkinsonâs. This means your movements are stiff and slow, but you might not have tremors. If you have tremors, youâre less likely to get dyskinesia.
  • Are under a lot of stress

Even if you have higher odds of getting dyskinesia, thereâs a lot you can do to stay as healthy as possible. Eat the right foods. Sleep well. Learn to manage stress. And get some exercise every day.

Do Gaba Supplements Offer Any Benefits

Research shows that GABA might play a key role in protecting against depression and anxiety. For instance, a review article published in the journal Neuropharmacology in 2011 concluded that people with anxiety and depression are more likely to have low levels of GABA.

However, there isn’t enough research on the health effects of GABA supplements to make any conclusions. What’s more, scientists haven’t yet figured out if GABA taken as a supplement can actually reach the brain and trigger any beneficial changes.

What Exactly Is Gaba

GABA is an amino acid which acts as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. GABAâs natural function is to reduce the activity of the neurons to which it binds. It inhibits nerve transmission in the brain, calming nervous activity. This can make a person feel more tranquil and give him or her sense of wellbeing.

The Potential Side Effects Of Gaba Supplements

Neurotransmitters Of CNS GABA, Glycine, Glutamate, Serotonin, Dopamine

Though the side effects of GABA have not been specifically studied, there have been some reported side effects from people taking GABA supplements, including:

  • Headache
  • Sleepiness
  • Upset stomach

Since GABA appears to be useful in treating insomnia, it can cause feelings of sleepiness and shouldn’t be taken before driving or operating heavy machinery until you’re aware of how it affects you in whatever dosage you’re consuming it at.

There is also very little research done on GABA’s interaction potential with other supplements or medications, so it’s recommended that you seek medical advice if you’re currently taking any medication, particularly for insomnia, anxiety, or depression, and make sure that your doctor is aware of this or any other herb, supplement, or over-the-counter drug you’re consuming.

Natural Ways To Boost Gaba Levels

Substances used to help you relax, such as alcohol, stimulate GABA receptors. This leads to feelings of relaxation and sleepiness. The same effect occurs as a result of taking sleep-inducing drugs such as Ambien .

But these approaches are only effective for a short period of time. They can also have undesirable side effects.

Certain herbal supplements may help elevate GABA levels in the brain. One study suggests that breathing in the scent of jasmine may help enhance the effects of GABA.

Certain mind-body practices may also help boost your brain’s levels of GABA. For example, a 2020 study published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that practicing yoga may lead to higher GABA levels. As a result, you may end up in a better mood and experience less anxiety.

Innovative Treatment Modalities For Managing Pain In Parkinson’s

Botulinum toxin

Non-dopaminergic pharmacotherapy may benefit patients with PD-related pain. Botulinum toxin , both A and B derivatives, should be considered in patients who do not respond to dopaminergic treatment optimization.1,8 Botulinum toxin injection provides localized treatment by blocking the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction.4 Local injections of BTX type A or B can be effective for persistent dystonia-related pain and central pain, based on its neuromuscular action in movement disorders plus analgesic mechanism.

A randomized, double-blind, crossover, placebo-controlled trial concluded that BTX-A in patients with PD is safe and potentially useful in treating limb pain.29 The study was conducted in patients with PD over the age of 30 years with painful limbs not responding to the optimization of anti-Parkinsonian medications. Patients were randomized to receive BTX-A injection or placebo, followed by the other treatment per the crossover design. Depending on the location of pain, patients received up to 200 units in upper limbs or up to 300 units in lower limbs. Patients experienced a significant reduction in their self-reported numerical pain score 4 weeks after the BTX-A injection , but not with placebo . There was no difference between the change with BTX-A compared to placebo . This study demonstrated that targeted BTX-A injections are safe in patients with PD.

Ca2+/gaba And Pd Motor Symptoms

The only output of the nervous system is the motor system, whether in cognition or action . It is also reasonable to hypothesize that PD motor symptoms are mainly due to basal ganglia deficiency . The basal ganglia play an essential role in adaptive motor control by allowing relevant motor programs to be executed while inhibiting potentially competing movements . In this control, the pallidal output keeps the different sensori-motor and motivational centers and their target neurons under tonic GABA inhibition . This unique spontaneously active GABA output may be particularly vulnerable to aging and neurodegeneration. A decline in the tonic GABA inhibitory activity of the basal ganglia results in increasing co-activation of different competitive motor programs . This, in turn, causes co-activation of a variety of muscle groups, including co-contractions of agonist and antagonist muscles and progressive stiffness, which leads to progressive changes in posture and a rigid gait . GABA compounds that cross the blood-brain barrier or increase GABA activity alleviate muscle stiffness caused by a lack of GABAergic tone. Also the use of GABA-producing transplants for recovery of function in the rat Parkinson model introduces a novel concept of therapeutic intervention in Parkinson’s disease .

There are many studies that have evaluated GABA-containing products and their effectiveness at lowering blood pressure. A 2003 study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming fermented milk with GABA helped significantly lower blood pressure levels in participants with elevated blood pressure in 2-4 weeks . And a 2009 study revealed that consuming a GABA-containing chlorella supplement 2 times a day lowered the blood pressure of subjects with borderline hypertension.

What Causes Parkinsons Disease

Parkinsons is caused by the degeneration of brain cells in an area of the brain called the substantia nigra. These neurons are responsible for the production of a particular neurotransmitter called dopamine and it is the lack of this neurotransmitter that is responsible for the main Parkinsons symptoms. The cause of the disease is not known. However, like most degenerative illnesses, it is likely to be due to a range of factors including interactions between genes and environment. Contributory factors may include environmental toxicity, physical trauma, genetics, drugs, disease , nutritional deficiency, mitochondrial insufficiency, enzyme deficiency and unremitting stress.

Deficit Of Gaba And Neurodegeneration

To protect the neurons, the GABA system must precisely control the calcium influx directly via GABAergic receptors and, indirectly, via astrocytes and glial networks . Activation of the classical presynaptic receptors GABAA and GABAB results in a hyperpolarization of neurons and plays a critical role in the long-term inhibition of synaptic transmission . During the hyperpolarizing phase, the voltage-gated calcium channels are blocked, thus protecting neurons from Ca2+ toxicity and gives them time to remove the surplus calcium ions . Removal of the divalent calcium ions from the mitochondria and cytoplasm requires, however, significant amounts of energy , and therefore, calcium overloaded neurons have high energy requirements . Hence, much evidence suggests a major role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of PD . Long-lasting intracellular calcium load results in mitochondrial oxidative stress that can exacerbate neurodegeneration . Consequently, the mitochondrial production of adenosine tri-phosphate drops rapidly and a toxic calcium excess cannot be removed from the cell. This cascade of pathological events is controlled by GABA activity that may precisely dose the amount of calcium entering the cell . A decline in this calcium buffering capacity is just responsible for neuronal loss in the substantia nigra in PD .

What Is Gaba The Brain

By Rachael Link, MS, RD

Most people have never even heard of GABA, let alone know what it does in the body. However, for those suffering from anxiety or insomnia, this important neurotransmitter can be the key to reducing symptoms.

In fact, many medications that are used to treat these conditions function by boosting the activity of this neurotransmitter in the brain. Benzodiazepines, for example, are a class of anti-anxiety drugs that work by enhancing the activity of GABA receptors to calm the nerves and alleviate anxiety.

Sleeping medications like Ambien also act by increasing the activity of GABA, resulting in a sedative effect that can relieve insomnia.

The significance of this key neurotransmitter has been recognized only in recent years, but it is now suspected to play a role in a multitude of health conditions, including ADHD, insomnia, depression, anxiety, inflammation and premenstrual syndrome.

It may also increase levels of human growth hormone, an important hormone that can reduce the risk of heart disease, increase muscle strength and kick up weight loss.

Fortunately, you can increase your levels of this crucial neurotransmitter naturally by either using a supplement or increasing levels of other natural compounds that directly affect its synthesis.

So What Does Nutrition Have To Do With Parkinsons

Baicalin Supplement for Calming and Antimicrobial Effects

1. The neurotransmitter dopamine is made in the body from amino acids which are the building blocks of protein. Every time we eat a protein rich food we take in protein, which the body breaks down into its component amino acids. Two amino acids are converted in the body into L-Dopa, which is then converted into dopamine in the brain.

2. Nutrient co-factors are required for each stage of this conversion process, so deficiencies of these may reduce dopamine production.

3. L-dopa medication competes for absorption with dietary amino acids, therefore the timing of taking L-dopa and the eating of protein needs to be managed for optimal absorption and effectiveness of the drug and the reduction of side-effects.

Therefore, the nutritional therapy approach to Parkinsons includes:

1. Supporting dopamine production by ensuring adequate precursors and co-factors

2. Considering drug-nutrient interactions to enhance effectiveness and reduce side-effects

3. Optimising nutritional status and addressing co-morbidities . These co-morbidities include constipation, depression, fatigue, and insomnia.

Who Should Take Gaba Supplements

The reason people take GABA supplements is to get better access to its calming influence on the brain. GABA supplements are thought to relieve stress, and in so doing improve your overall health, because excess stress can lead to a weakened immune system, poor sleep quality, and a higher risk for anxiety and depression. There are also some health conditions that are associated with lower levels of GABA, so if you have any of the following health concerns, then GABA supplementation may be good for you.

People may need more GABA if they have:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Movement disorders
  • Seizure disorders

Consult a qualified health care professional if you’re on any other medications for these conditions, and ask your doctor if GABA supplements could help manage some of the symptoms associated with these disorders. If you’re considering taking a GABA supplement, read on to find out how upping your intake of GABA affects your brain cells and may help improve your quality of life.

Risks And Side Effects

GABA is safe for most people and can be used with minimal side effects. However, some people may want to limit or avoid its use.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not take a GABA supplement as its effects have not been studied in these individuals. Additionally, if youre already taking medications for depression, anxiety or insomnia, you may want to talk to your doctor before starting supplementation as it could interfere with or alter the activity of these medications.

Some people have also reported that high doses can actually increase anxiety or depressive episodes. Additionally, if you have any other negative symptoms like skin tingling or flushing, discontinue use and talk to your health care practitioner.

Gaba Supplements Face Considerable Obstacles

While side effects are a significant concern for many patients, GABA supplements also suffer from issues independent of their side effect profile, the most significant of which is its general lack of bioavailability. In other words, if patients take a GABA supplement, only a small portion of that supplement is ready for their body to use. This is because GABA cannot cross the blood-brain-barrier in high quantities under normal physiological conditions, which means that it cannot reach the central nervous system unless the supplement has been formulated specifically to optimize bioavailability. Presently, prescription pharmaceutical drugs like Gabapentin are the only formulations of GABA that are confirmed to reliably cross the BBB in significant concentrations. This is in part because formulating supplements to cross the BBB is expensive, leading many manufacturers to neglect this critical project. As a result, most of the GABA content from these supplements ends up digested by the stomach and rendered useless, with the remainder used by the digestive tract.

How Gaba Influences Physical Health

SOLGAR GABA 500MG 100 CAPS Vitasalud

Proper GABA activity plays an important role in several diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders in which the bodys nerve cells break down or die.

Among these disorders are:

  • Huntington’s disease: Reduced levels of GABA in people with Huntington’s disease may contribute to dysfunction in the area of the brain that regulates voluntary movement.
  • Epilepsy: A lack of GABA activity is related to excessive nervous system activity during seizures.
  • Parkinson’s disease: Rather than too little GABA activity, too much activity may be present with Parkinson’s disease. This blocks messages in the movement centers of the brain.

Other disorders related to GABA activity include the following:

  • Pyridoxine deficiency is a rare disease in which the vitamin pyridoxine is not available to synthesize, or form, GABA. A lack of pyridoxine may cause seizures during infancy.
  • Hepatic encephalopathyis a disorder in which liver disease affects brain function. It’s associated with high levels of ammonia in the body. This ammonia may bind to GABA receptors and prevent them from functioning correctly.
  • Dystoniais a movement disorder that involves involuntary muscle spasms that are believed to be related to a lack of GABA activity.
