Parkinsons Association Of Ireland

The Parkinson’s Association of Ireland was established in 1987 as a company limited by guarantee. Our charity is based in Dublin, with branches throughout the country. Our aim is to assist people with Parkinson’s, their families and carers, health professionals and interested others, by offering support, a listening ear, and information on any aspect of living with Parkinson’s and we also initiate and fund research into Parkinson’s disease, its causes and affects.

Our association chose the Aspen leaf logo as a symbol of Parkinson’s as the Aspen leaf trembles even on a still day but the branches and trunk of the tree are sturdy and strong.

Our office is open weekdays from 9am to 5pm and is staffed by our Helpline Manager and Office Manager, Pauline Mahady, and we have been joined by Nicola Kavanagh, who is our Parkinson’s Nurse. We have also recently been joined by Sabrina Fagan who is our Fundraising and Communications Officer..

We can send you information about Parkinson’s , treatments, information about your rights and entitlements, exercise classes, meetings, etc.If you would like to talk directly to Sabrina in relation to your planned fundraiser please email or phone 01 8722234.

Many People With Parkinsons Find Their Symptoms Get Worse During Coronavirus Lockdowns

Together, we can provide vital support and fund life-changing research for people living with Parkinsons and their loved ones.

For Drew, a married father of two, Parkinsons means he cant have the career he dreamed of. Diagnosed at 34, he suffers from stiffness, rigidity and fatigue. This means he cant do everyday tasks easily, like taking a shower or brushing his teeth. Sometimes he cant move his hands or pick things up.

It hurts to know I cant have the career I wanted. I was setting myself up to become a luthier someone who builds instruments and toys and furniture. I love making things and working with wood. After I was diagnosed, I became really depressed.

Its hard to put into words just how life-changing a new treatment would be. It would mean getting my future back. My kids getting their dad back to his full potential. And my wife getting the man she married back.

Integrating Parkinsons Care And Research

In addition to providing integrative patient care, Barrow neurologists and scientists are also conducting revolutionary research. Barrow scientists are currently involved in more than a dozen clinical trials and research studies, making great strides in treating the symptoms of Parkinsons and working towards halting the disease.

In one groundbreaking study, Ryan Walsh, MD, PhD, is combining the structural MRI that shows tumors or stroke damage with a functional MRI, which shows whether regions of the brain are active or not, and an MRI that measures blood flow through the brain. Comparing data from all three should help uncover the correlations between damage to functional networks, structural networks and blood flow, and lead to better diagnoses, measurement of the diseases progress, understanding of why someone is responding to treatment and, ultimately, the key to a cure.
