What You Need To Know About Your Dogs Idiopathic Head Tremors

Capa is a three-year-old Lab/Basset hound mix. I adopted him from a local shelter, and since then hes had somewhere between 7 and 10 of these episodes. I dont know his medical history from before I adopted him, but the tremors could have started anytime from when he was a few months old onward. For all I know, he may not have had them before I adopted him.

If a mixed breed dogs lineage includes one of the aforementioned breeds, hes still got a higher chance of having idiopathic head tremors. My dog probably has more than just Lab and Basset lineage, and he may be a mix of other breeds prone to the condition. Theres no way to know whether your dog will develop the tremors until they actually show up.

With animals, we do use the same medications that are useful in human subjects. Obviously, there are some cost issues with using the newer human medications. We generally start with the older, simpler medications like phenobarbital or diazepam , however we also use medications like Keppra and potassium bromide, as well as gabapentin and zonisamide, says Denish.

While there are vets who specialize in neurological issues, you might not necessarily need to enlist the help of a specialist.

Most cases of seizures or tremors can be handled by a conventional vet, says Denish. However, even we will seek the help and guidance of a veterinary neurologist in difficult cases, or cases that don’t respond appropriately to medicine. A twitch results from peripheral nerve hyperexcitability . The term PNH describes a motor neuron dysfunction with a number of clinical signs from cramps, fasciculations, myokymia, neuromyotonia, tetany and tetanus. These signs share similar features and are clinically difficult to distinguish, with cramps and fasciculations representing a mild manifestation of PNH through to myokymia and neuromyotonia, which can be more severe.

PNH is differentiated from other involuntary muscle contractions by observing twitches of variable frequency and amplitude that do not cause movement in the affected body segment .

Polyneuropathies

Congenital and acquired polyneuropathies have been associated with myokymia, neuromyotonia, fasciculations and cramps in people, in particular the demyelinating rather than axonal neuropathies. It is uncertain whether this is the result of an antibody-mediated channelopathy, re-organisation of VGKC at the sites of demyelination, or nerve hyperexcitability in newly formed unmyelinated collaterals. This phenomenon has not been reported in small animals, but may explain the presence of tremor-like signs in dogs and cats with neuromuscular disease. However, fasciculations associated with these diseases are often of short duration, episodic and present during attempts at muscle activity.
