Stem Cell Therapy For Parkinsons Disease

Parkinsons disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system affecting movements. It develops gradually, starting with the barely noticeable tremors but in the later stages, it is associated with frequent body stiffness and slowing-down or complete loss of movement. People with Parkinsons disease may experience muscular tremors, stiff muscles, delayed muscular movements and issues with locomotor actions such as balance, walking, etc. With recent technological advancements in stem cells, it is possible to proactively alter the effects of the disease and live a full, happy, healthy life. Having the potential to significantly impact the development of diseased state, stem cell treatment for Parkinsons can create dopamine-producing cells which enhance normal communication between neurons and provide a vastly improved quality of life.

Parkinsons Disease: Diagnosis And Tests

No specific test exists to diagnose Parkinsons disease. A neurologist who specializes in diagnosing neurological disorders diagnoses Parkinsons disease based on your signs & symptoms, a thorough neurological & physical examination, and medical history.

The doctor may also recommend blood tests to check whats the main reason for the cause of symptoms.

Apart from this, your doctor may recommend a specific single-photon emission computerized tomography scan called a dopamine transporter scan and other imaging tests such as MRI, ultrasound, and PET scans. Although, these tests arent much help in diagnosing Parkinsons disease.

Your doctor may suggest regular follow-up appointments to evaluate the symptoms over time to diagnose Parkinsons disease.

Parkinson’s Disease: Diagnostics In India

The main task of a neurologist during the examination of a patient is to determine whether Parkinsonism is primary or secondary disease.

The primary Parkinson’s disease is a violation of dopamine production. The symptoms of the secondary Parkinson’s disease are similar to the primary, but are caused by other disorders. Accurate diagnostics at the early stages differentiates one pathology from another and helps to choose the optimal method of treatment.

Complex diagnostics of Parkinson’s disease in Indian clinics includes:

  • Complete blood counts for patients general condition evaluation
  • Electroencephalography for evaluating brain electrical activity
  • Electromyography analyzes the state of muscles and displays the rhythm of the extremities tremor
  • CT to determine the amount of produced dopamine.

What Is The Diet For Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s patients should remember that they ought to control their diet in order to manage the disease better. Being healthy and being the right weight can help them cope with the disease and reduce the symptoms.

  • It is extremely vital for people with Parkinson’s to ensure their diet contains a lot of fiber. Some of the foods with high fiber include peas and beans, whole grain bread, vegetables, cereals, rice, and fresh fruits.
  • Food that has a lot of cholesterol or saturated fat is definitely a big No No.
  • Reduce the amount of milk and curds a person consumes, and sugar and salt intake should also be restricted.
  • People with Parkinson’s should consume a lot of water – at least 8 glasses per day.
  • Avoid alcohol, as it might interfere with the medications.

Common Drugs For Parkinson’s Disease

Levodopa and carbidopa . Levodopa is the most commonly prescribed medicine for Parkinsonâs. Itâs also the best at controlling the symptoms of the condition, particularly slow movements and stiff, rigid body parts.

Levodopa works when your brain cells change it into dopamine. Thatâs a chemical the brain uses to send signals that help you move your body. People with Parkinsonâs donât have enough dopamine in their brains to control their movements.

Sinemet is a mix of levodopa and another drug called carbidopa. Carbidopa makes the levodopa work better, so you can take less of it. That prevents many common side effects of levodopa, such as nausea, vomiting, and irregular heart rhythms.

Sinemet has the fewest short-term side effects, compared with other Parkinsonâs medications. But it does raise your odds for some long-term problems, such as involuntary movements. An inhalable powder form of levodopa and the tablet istradefylline have been approved for those experiencing OFF periods, OFF periods can happen when Parkinsonâs symptoms return during periods between scheduled doses of levodopa/carbidopa.

People who take levodopa for 3-5 years may eventually have restlessness, confusion, or unusual movements within a few hours of taking the medicine. Changes in the amount or timing of your dose will usually prevent these side effects.

Dopamine agonists. These drugs act like dopamine in the brain. They include pramipexole , rotigotine , and ropinirole , .

The Typical Symptoms Of Parkinson’s Disease Are:

  • Slowed movement : Almost all the movements can only be performed slowly. People who are affected walk very slowly and hesitantly and can only take short steps. They find it hard to start moving, and taking the first step is particularly difficult. But, once they start moving, it is difficult for them to stop. With the progress of the disease, they stop swinging their arms when walking. Due to reduced activity in the facial muscles, the face becomes mask-like. Speech becomes quiet and swallowing also becomes harder. The early symptoms of Parkinson’s are subtle and occur gradually, but in some people the disease progresses more quickly than in others. As the disease progresses, the shaking, or tremor, which affects the majority of people, begins to interfere with daily activities.
  • Muscle stiffness: The muscles of the arms, legs, and neck can become stiff and tense. The muscles stiffen up and cannot be moved at all or with great difficulty. This excessive tensing of the muscles often causes aches and pains in the body.
  • Tremors: Most people with Parkinson’s suffer from tremors. These tremors decrease or hampers movement, and these tremors can be particularly seen in the hands.
  • Other symptoms: Difficulty in swallowing, chewing, speaking, urinary problems, constipation, skin problems, and sleep disruptions.

The Investigation In Mice

In their recent study paper, the scientists refer to research suggesting that neurotrophic factors molecules that help neurons survive and thrive could, in theory, restore the function of neurons that produce dopamine. However, the clinical benefit of these factors had yet to be proven.

The team focused on bone morphogenetic proteins 5 and 7 . They had previously shown that BMP5/7 has an important role in dopamine-producing neurons in mice.

In the latest study, the scientists wanted to see whether BMP5/7 could protect the neurons of mice against the damaging effects of misfolded alpha-synuclein proteins.

To do this, they injected one group of mice with a viral vector that caused misfolded alpha-synuclein proteins to form in their brains. They used other mice as a control group. The scientists then injected the mice with the BMP5/7 protein.

What Are The Side

How is Parkinson

Some of the patients who were treated with Kappikacchu have shown mild side effects, which include headache, dystonia , fatigue, tremors, syncope and thirst. Other drugs, such as Amantadine, which improves symptoms in about 50% of the patients may cause edema, confusion, and liver reticularis. Side effects of other drugs include confusion, delirium and psychosis.

What Is Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease belongs to a group of conditions called motor system disorders, which are the result of the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells. Parkinson’s is a disease of the nervous system that mostly affects older people, which typically begins at the age of 50. It is a progressive disease that, in most cases, will continue to gradually get worse.

One of the worst things about the disease is that it can be very hard to cope with the disease and live with it, because it severely restricts mobility and as a result makes daily activities increasingly difficult. Many people who develop Parkinson’s will require nursing care. As the cause of Parkinson’s is not known, there is no cure for the disease, but there are effective treatments that can relieve the symptoms.

How Can Stem Cell Technology Help

Stem cell technologies show promise for treating Parkinson’s Disease and may play an increasing role in alleviating at least the motor symptoms, if not others, in the decades to come.

“We are in desperate need of a better way of helping people with Parkinson’s disease. It is on the increase worldwide. There is still no cure, and medications only go part way to fully treat incoordination and movement problems,” said Claire Henchcliffe, from Weill Cornell Medical College in the US.

“If successful, using stem cells as a source of transplantable dopamine-producing nerve cells could revolutionize care of the Parkinson’s disease patient in the future,” said Malin Parmar, from Lund University in Sweden.

“A single surgery could potentially provide a transplant that would last throughout a patient’s lifespan, reducing or altogether avoiding the need for dopamine-based medications,” said Parmar.

In the past, most transplantation studies in PD used human cells from aborted embryos. While these transplants could survive and function for many years, there were scientific and ethical issues — foetal cells are in limited supply, and they are highly variable and hard to quality control.

Some patients were treated, while another developed allergy with the graft.

This approach is now rapidly moving into initial testing in clinical trials, researchers said.

The first systematic clinical transplantation trials using pluripotent stem cells as donor tissue were initiated in Japan in 2018.

What Ayurveda Says About Parkinsons Disease

Parkinsonism is a condition where movement is affected and hence is a Vaatha roga called as Kampa Vaatha. Kampaimplies the tremor associated with the condition. Both internal medications and external therapies are essential to break the pathology of the condition. Suitable Panchakarma therapies, which are the five cleansing therapies of Ayurveda, will be very effective to eliminate the accumulated toxins in body. The protocol of treatment involves internal medications to enhance digestion, clear the channels of circulation, break down aama and regulate function of vaatha dosha are given. The wide range of formulations includes decoctions, powders, medicated ghee, confections, pills, etc. Internal administration of ghee medicated with brain tonics is specifically important here. The procedure is called as Snehapaana. Along with them the following external therapies are performed:

  • Udvarthana: A procedure where medicinal powder is rubbed all over body in a systematic manner for a fixed duration.
  • Kizhi: Application of medicine filled poultice over body after heating it, in a synchronized manner. This is particularly effective for nerve stimulation.
  • Dhaara: Pouring of warm medicated liquid or oil all over body in a specific pattern for a fixed duration.
  • Abhyanga and Ooshma sweda: Oiling the body and steaming is a very effective method to normalize abnormal Vaatha dosha

Apomorphine Pen & Pump, the treatment that will radically change the life of a Parkinsons patient will now be available in India. The treatment was launched in Mumbai recently by the Health Minister of Maharashtra, Dr. Deepak Sawant and Paresh Rawal, Actor and Member of Parliament.

Parkinsons disease is one of the common neurodegenerative diseases affecting the people over the age of 55 years. Parkinsons is characterized by slowness, stiffness and tremors are a special neurodegenerative disorder with very few therapeutic options available. In India, the prevalence of this disease advances between the age of 70-79. It is caused by dopamine deficiency which is a chemical neuro transmitter in the brain mainly in the centers controlling the mobility.

Apomorphine is a highly selective Dopamine receptor stimulator, which promotes the release of dopamine in the brain from the nerve cells that is otherwise absent.
