The Challenges Of Parkinson’s & How Kiziks Help

Sometimes Parkinsons disease can complicate the basic daily activities a person living with Parkinsons once did easily, like bathing, dressing, eating, sleeping and even walking. Tremors, rigidity, and unbalance that often come with Parkinson’s can feel like a setback to a “normal” life. The truth is that the management of these symptoms is no simple task, that’s why we want to help remove one of the challenges they present.

Drake Park Walk Raises Funds For Parkinsons Disease Support

Another crisp fall day brought walkers to Drake Park in Bend on Sunday, but it wasnt just to enjoy the scenery.

More than 200 people signed up for the Sole Support 1K and 5K walk, a fundraiser for Parkinsons Resources of Oregon.

It was the organizations final event of the season after walks in Portland, Vancouver, and Eugene.

Folks with Parkinsons rely upon our support services, and this is a way they can gather with their families and friends to really feel the love, and also take some emphasis on the role of exercise for Parkinsons, the organizations executive director Holly Chaimov said. Its really important that our constituents are out moving every day.

Folks also enjoyed food carts, vendors and kids activities while they enjoyed the sunshine and waited for the walk to begin.

The event was well on its way to a $50,000 fundraising goal before the walk had even started.

This was Parkinsons Resources of Oregons fifth year hosting the walk in Bend, and they also have a Bend office location, as well as locations in Portland and Eugene.

Whats important is that people know that if you or someone that you care about has a diagnosis of Parkinsons Disease, understanding that there are people here in your local community that can help, that can talk you through your healthcare decisions, help you understand what resources are available, and really provide you with the assurance you need to get about living your life as well as you can, Chaimov said.

Balancepro Insoles Can Improve Walking Stability For Parkinsons

The key inventor of BalancePro insole, Dr. Stephen Perry has conducted a research study using the BalancePro insoles with people with Parkinsons disease. BalancePro insoles provides increased plantar sensory stimulation during gait in a group of individuals with Parkinsons disease in comparison with healthy age-matched controls. Spatialtemporal parameters of gait were evaluated using an instrumented carpet, and muscle activation patterns were evaluated using surface electromyography . All participants were tested with both BalancePro insoles and conventional insoles while walking 20 feet. Results indicated that the use of the BalancePro insoles produced a significant increase in single-limb support time. Additionally, the muscle activation sequence of the tibialis anterior was normalized by the facilitatory insole, at the time of initial ground contact. These changes may lead to an overall improvement in gait pattern and stability, and suggests that the use of the BalancePro insoles may be a useful treatment strategy for improving the gait of individuals with Parkinsons disease. This also provides support for the role of facilitation of the foot sole sensation in improving motor output in individuals with Parkinsons disease2.

People With Parkinsons Are At High Risk Of Falling

Special shoe for Parkinsons patient

According to a retrospective fall study of 489 in-patients admitted to a department of neurology, approximately 60% of PD patients had a history of at least one fall over the previous twelve months1. Gait and posture impairment are the main causes of falls for Parkinsons. There is increasing evidence that these motor impairments may be partially due to deficits within the sensory system.
