Best Bed For Parkinson’s Patients

The Mattress May Be The Cause Of Incomplete Sleep

Parkinsons Bed

Many people do not realize that their mattress may be the cause for so many physical discomforts and they will often invest in expensive treatments that may be unnecessary. If you wake up with back or neck and shoulder pain, you may need a new mattress. If your mattress is old and sags it may not be giving you enough support.

Levinsohn Textile Company Satin Charmeuse Silky Sheet Set Collection

Parkinsons deeply affects peoples functionality and mobility. This can cause poor sleeping patterns because of the difficulty people have turning in bed. Dr. Nwabuobi says silk sheets can make readjusting at night easier for people with Parkinsons. While silk is nice, it can also be terribly expensive. But these satin silk sheets do the job just fine and are a steal in comparison. These sheets are lightweight, breathable, and soft to the touch. Available in red, black, grey, and ivory, these sheets will add a nice pop of color to the bedroom and make anyone excited to fall asleep.

Allbirds has a great selection of slip-on shoes for both men and women. Their Tree Loungers, made from eucalyptus tree fibers, are especially nice. In addition to being conveniently laceless, theyre also lightweight and breathable, making it even easier for people with Parkinsons to slip them on. With their low-density soles, the Tree Loungers mimic the shape of your feet and add little weight, ensuring your mobility isnt hindered. Considering tremors are a common symptom of the condition, putting on shoes can be a complicated and time consuming task. But these shoes make the process simpleand it doesnt hurt that they help the environment by emitting less carbon than petroleum-based foam shoes.

Squatty Potty The Original Bathroom Toilet Stool Slim Teak

Constipation is one of the common non-movement symptoms of Parkinsons disease, which is why many with the condition could benefit from a toilet stool. The Squatty Potty Slim Teak lifts your feet while sitting on the toilet to mimic a natural squat. While the act of pooping is anything but glamorous, the Squatty Potty has a sleek design that will add to any bathroom decor. Its also easy to clean and tuck away.

Weighted utensils like this set from the BunMo Store can make it easier for those with Parkinson’s to keep their food on their utensils and make its path to the mouth much smoother. This stainless steel set weighs a minimum of seven ounces per piece, while still maintaining a standard silverware size and shape.

Can A Proper Mattress Help

Having the right mattress is a huge step in the right direction for someone with spinal stenosis. One of the causes of this condition is degeneration caused by the spine being out of alignment over long periods. This happens due to daily micro-traumas, like poor posture, too much sitting, and sleeping on a mattress that doesnt allow your spine to maintain a natural alignment.

The best thing about sleeping on a mattress that allows for proper alignment is that you could get the benefit of helping your body heal without having to do anything!

In addition to keeping your spine in the position its supposed to be in, a proper mattress can also help with pain relief. A bed that is either too hard or too soft for your condition could make your pain worse, while one that has an ideal mattress firmness level can help alleviate that symptom.

What Types Of Mattresses Are Best For Seniors

In general, the best mattresses for seniors have sufficient support to maintain neutral spine alignment, enough contouring to relieve pressure points , and some means for regulating body temperature.

Mattresses with firm edge support will not only prevent sagging and last longer but also make it easier to get in and out of bed.

One of the common challenges for seniors is dealing with pain while they sleep. If youre a senior with arthritis, back pain, or other joint pain, the best mattress types include latex and high-density memory foam mattresses with a medium to medium-firm level of firmness.

If you deal with leg cramps, poor circulation, sleep apnea, snoring, or acid reflux, an adjustable bed frames can be a good choice. These also make it easier to get in and out of bed.

Common Sleep Issues Among People With Pd

The mechanism of sleepiness in Parkinsons disease is multifactorial, including non-restorative sleep, sedative effects of treatment, and lesions in arousal systems , Dr. Dragicevic says. I find it very difficult to get out of bed in the morning because I am so stiff and have aches and pains everywhere, can anyone suggest a mattress which could improve this. Thanks.

Unfortunately Im having the same issues as you. I currently have a memory foam mattress but its not that good, it moulds my bottom in to it so when I sit on the edge of the bed, its uncomfortable unless Im sat in the moulded bit, but then thats uncomfortable too!

Money has been tight since I had to give up work so havent been able to look into replacing it yet.

Good luck to you tho, I hope you are able to find one that is suitable for you x

I recently bought an excellent mattress and am much more comfortable in bed. We are all different. I joined Which for a month for an introductory offer of £1 and used their recommendations to choose a mattress that suited my needs. I no longer get up in the morning as a stiff aching Peter Crouch tribute act.

have you thought about a bed support Handel. I have had one provided free by Norfolk community care services and its U shaped about 1 foot from my pillow and gives me something to grab and help me in getting in and out of bed. Doesnt help with the aches and stiffness but certainly makes it easier to get out of bed. Just a thought

nice one Jon, our local library has a subscription to Which – we use that whenever we want to buy something substantial

My Wife Has Parkinsons Is A Firm/orthopaedic Mattress Is Best

Bed sheets and sleep garments to improve freedom of movement in bed

My wife has Parkinons. I guess a firm/orthopedic mattres is best. What is your advice?

Dear Peter,

Thank you for your enquiry. We would only recommend a firm mattress if your wifes comfort preferences were for a firmer feel and if she is a front sleeper. We do not sell orthopaedic mattresses as a mattress that is too firm would be as bad if not worse than a mattress that was too soft. I have included some links to articles that cover these mattresses.

Getting the correct support is the most important aspect, this is provided by the spring tension and is determined solely by an individuals body weight.

Bodyweight
Available in Bespoke Products Soft

In order to determine which of our models would be most suitable for your wife, we would need to take into consideration the type and feel of her current bed and why this is no longer suitable for her. Her comfort preferences and sleeping habits play a big part in determining whether a soft, medium or firm mattress would be more suitable. For instance, if she sleeps on her side then a firm mattress would cause pressure pain in her shoulders, hips and knees whereas if she sleeps on her front then a soft mattress would make her back over arch and cause lower back pain. Knowing this information would help us to tailor a recommendation to her individual needs.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office where one of our friendly team will be happy to help.

Kind Regards

Aging Couple May Not Need The Exact Same Mattress

Sometimes an aging couple have completely different health needs and a type of mattress that is good for one is not good for the other one. This is best solved by buying twin beds or a bed that allows for two different kinds of mattresses, so one can be firm and the other can be soft or medium. A king size bed has enough room to support two different kinds of mattresses. So one may sleep on soft or medium firm memory foam, while the other one may need a more firm mattress on springs or latex foam.

Comfort And Safety Tips

  • Make sure electric cords, feeding lines or bedding wont get caught when the raiser is in motion.
  • If your bed has a bedside rail or bed lever, it should be positioned so that it goes up and down with the mattress.
  • Be aware that in the raised position, a mattress raiser can cause you to slide down and out of the bed.

An electric profiling or hospital bed can be used to help you sit up from lying down. Some people find it reduces dizziness and ankle swelling.

Hospital beds are usually height-adjustable and may have side rails. They may have casters or wheels, which allow the bed to be moved.

Electric profiling beds tend to look more like an ordinary bed. Both types of bed usually allow you to raise and lower the mattress at the head and knees.

If you have a partner and they want the bed in a different position, some styles of electric profiling beds split the mattress, so each person can adjust the mattress to the position they want.

Common Situations For People With Parkinsons:

  • Heavy people cannot get in/out of bed – lightweight spouse getting up many times a night to roll their spouse over or otherwise help them. UTIs can be common requiring getting out of bed even more often at night.
  • Falls are becoming more commonplace and risk of injury increases greatly for the person and spouse . A serious fall/injury can cause a person to leave their home forever.
  • People being forced to leave their home and move to expensive extended care facilities because of their bed mobility problems.
  • People that no longer can get in/out of bed- some are forced to sleep in a recliner for years- bad for a persons back and bedsore risk increases due to not changing position.
  • People leaving their comfortable wide bed thinking their only remaining choice is to sleep alone in an uncomfortable hospital bed the rest of their lives- they now have a choice that never existed before.
  • People buying expensive adjustable beds with the expectation that transfer problems will be solved when often the bed does nothing to address the problem- and a soft mattress can make repositioning problems even worse.
  • Around the clock caregivers may be needed to help a person at night- or sometimes family members take turns staying over to provide assistance.
  • If no nighttime help a person unable to get out of bed risks death in case of fire.
  • In cases of little/no leg strength the transfer bar option allows many the ability to safely/independently bed transfer.

Changes In Sleep With Aging

Theraposture Rotoflex bed: help with Parkinsonâs â getting out of bed safely

As people age, they experience a number of changes in their circadian rhythms, and among the most noticeable are the changes in the sleep-wake cycle. Older people tend to wake up earlier and go to bed earlier than they did when they were younger. They wake up more often during the night and have more difficulty going back to sleep than younger people. They also tend to sleep more during the daytime hours. Therefore, if one looks at total sleep time over the 24-hour day, the total time spent sleeping changes very little but the distribution of sleep may be quite different. Younger people experience a consolidated nighttime episode with little or no daytime sleep, whereas older individuals experience sleep episodes throughout the 24-hour day. Daytime sleepiness is affected by two major factors: the amount and quality of nighttime sleep, and the strength of the circadian rhythm. In addition, older people tend to have a reduced amount of N3 or deep slow wave sleep.
