Walk For Parkinson’s 2021

Your Support Enhances Lives

Who Do You Move For? – Moving Day, A Walk for Parkinsons Disease 2021

Your donations to and fundraising efforts for the WALK FOR PARKINSON provides the programs and services to those living with Parkinsons, their care partners and families in Central Florida. With your support and dedication to meeting your fundraising goals, we can provide the best care possible for those with Parkinson’s and their loved ones.

Are There Any Risks Of Exercising With Parkinsons Disease

Some symptoms, like Parkinsons tremors, may seem worse during exercise. But exercise generally improves tremors and other symptoms in the long run.

Reduce challenges by stretching before and after exercise. Use good form to prevent injury. And avoid slippery floors, poor lighting and tripping hazards. If you have pain, stop and rest.

Pushing yourself too hard during exercise can lead to injury. Start slowly and increase intensity and duration over time. Keep a log to track your exercise choices and how you feel. Eventually, youll learn what works best for you.

What Will This New Walk Look Like

Well still be encouraging walkers to choose their level of walk2, 4 or 7kmand wed love you to don your purple clothes and take a selfie of your walking group. This is still about raising funds and awareness for Parkinsons research, and wed love it if you could help by spreading the word as much as you can. Why notinvite a friend who may not have been able to attend otherwise, and walk with them at a time that suits?

REGARDING COVID-19 AND THE “WALK”CDC GUIDENCE AS OF AUGUST 16, 2021

PASD and “Fighting Parkinson’s Step by Step” 5k organizers are following CDC, state and local guidelines related to outdoor events and prevention of the spread of COVID-19, including variants:

CDC “Recommendations for Outdoor Settings”: Current data suggest the risk of transmission of SARS-COV-2 in outdoor settings is minimal. In general, fully vaccinated people do not need to wear a mask outdoors. Fully vaccinated people might choose to wear a mask in crowded outdoor settings if they or someone in their household is immunocompromised.

People who are immunocompromised should be counseled about the potential for reduced immune responses to COVID-19 vaccines and to followcurrent prevention measures regardless of their vaccination status to protect themselves against COVID-19 until advised otherwise by their healthcare provider.

Fully vaccinated people might choose to mask regardless of the level of transmission, particularly if they or someone in their household is immunocompromised or at increased risk for severe disease, or if someone in their household is unvaccinated. People who are at increased risk for severe disease include older adults and those who have certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, overweight or obesity, and heart conditions.

Outside your home: Put 6 feet of distance between yourself and people who dont live in your household.

Should I Talk To My Healthcare Provider Before I Start Exercising If I Have Parksinson’s Disease

Talk to your neurologist and your primary care provider before starting a new exercise regimen. They can:

  • Counsel you on how intense your exercises can be.
  • Recommend exercises appropriate for your individual health.
  • Refer you to a physical therapist to create a personal exercise program.
  • Warn about exercises to avoid based on your particular challenges or limitations.

Were Backbut A Little Bit Different

After such a challenging year, were so pleased to announce that Freds Walk the Bay for Parkinsons is happening again this April. However, unlike previous years, we wont have a single event day where were all gathering. Rather, were encouraging as many people who can to register and walk on their own or in small groups, any time during April or early May .

The implications of COVID-19 and the fact that so many members of our community are in high-risk health categories have been contributing factors to this decision.

Where Can I Find Support If I Have Parkinson’s Disease And Want To Exercise

Demoucelle Parkinson Charity

You can find exercise support in your community. For example, many gyms and community centers offer seated exercise classes for people who struggle with balance. Ask your healthcare provider for ideas if you have Parkinsons disease and want to exercise.

A note from Cleveland Clinic

Exercise is an important part of managing Parkinsons disease. Talk to your healthcare provider about your exercise program and choose activities you enjoy so you stay motivated to get up and move every day.

If I Exercise Will I Still Need My Parkinsons Medications

Some people find that exercise helps them reduce the doses of Parkinsons medications over time. But exercise is not a replacement for your medications. In fact, some people need more medications so they can stay active. Dont make changes to your medications without talking to your healthcare providers.
