Stretching And Flexibility Exercises Help Keep You Limber

The Parkinsons Foundation says that stretching and flexibility exercises should be the first step in your exercise program. These exercises help offset the muscle rigidity that comes with Parkinsons disease, and people who are more flexible tend to have an easier time with everyday movements like walking, the Parkinsons Foundation adds.

Although theres no standard stretching regimen for people with Parkinsons, the Foundation suggests:

  • Performing stretching routines lasting at least 10 minutes at a time
  • Stretching at least three to four times per week
  • Holding stretches for 10 to 30 seconds and performing three to four repetitions of each stretch
  • Breathing evenly in and out during each stretch
  • Not stretching to the point of pain instead, each stretch should feel like a gentle pull

In addition, a flexibility program should focus on areas of the body most affected by symptoms, including the chest wall, shoulders, elbows, back of the thighs and knees, calves, wrists and palms, lower back, and neck.

Stretches and flexibility exercises can be performed while seated or lying down, to avoid strain on your muscles and fatigue.

Does Parkinsons Disease Need Long

Parkinsons has four primary symptoms: tremors in hands, arms, legs, jaw, or head muscle stiffness slow movement and impaired balance and coordination, sometimes leading to falls. Other symptoms may include:

  • Depression or other mood changes
  • Difficulty swallowing, chewing, and speaking
  • Urinary problems or constipation

These symptoms and the rate of progression is different for each patient. Early signs of this disease are often subtle and come on gradually, often beginning on only one side of the body or even just one limb.

Over time Parkinsons may cause serious mobility issues. Many patients opt for Parkinsons care at home. Some medications lessen the effects of the illness. If you have been diagnosed with Parkinsons, talk to your health care provider about medicines. There are several different drugs available to treat the symptoms of Parkinsons disease. These medications can help improve your quality of life by reducing tremors, slowing down muscle rigidity, improving balance, and increasing mobility.

Medicines like levodopa can help treat the symptoms of Parkinsons by:

  • Increasing dopamine in the brain
  • Effecting other brain chemicals like neurotransmitters
  • Helping control non-movement symptoms

Typically patients take a medication called carbidopa in addition to levodopa to prevent or reduce some of the side effects of levodopa.

Assessment Of Gait Parameters

Stride time , percentage of double stance time , stride length and the coefficient of stride length were assessed at different walking speeds on a motorized medical treadmill ergometer. There is sufficient evidence that gait variability is increased in basal ganglia disorders . Furthermore, increased stride-to-stride variability might reflect a failure of automatic stepping mechanisms . Increased gait variability can be seen throughout the course of Parkinsons disease and has been found to be one aspect of walking, closely associated with risk of falls in the elderly .

For better comparison of the training effects patients walked at 6 different walking speeds prior and after the training period. The treadmill was equipped with force platforms, that allowed an accurate determination of foot-ground contact. Patients were not allowed to use the handrails of the treadmill for support.

Tips For Getting Started

  • First, be safe. Before starting an exercise program, we recommend you to see a physical therapist specializing in Parkinsons for full functional evaluation and recommendations..
  • Use a pedometer and figure out how many steps you take on average each day, then build up from there. Many smartphones or smartwatches have a built-in pedometer feature or an application that can be downloaded.
  • Exercise indoors and outdoors. Change your routine to stay interested and motivated.
  • Again, most importantly pick an exercise you enjoy.

How To Start Exercising If Youre Living With Parkinsons

Daily Seated Parkinsons Exercises

Safety is key. The first thing you need to do is talk with your neurologist and primary care doctor to make sure that the exercise regimen that you embark upon is safe for you.

Next, ask for a referral for physical therapy. A physical therapist will be able to figure out what movement challenges you may have and design a program to help you improve. There are certain physical therapists with additional training in Parkinsons. Your physical therapist will work with you for your allotted sessions, and then can help you plan your ongoing exercise regimen that is tailored to you. You can contact the APDA National Rehabilitation Resource Center for Parkinsons Disease for help finding resources in your area.

Additionally, physical therapy can help counteract the tendency for people with PD to reduce the size of their movements. The Lee Silverman Voice Technique has designed a program called LSVT-BIG which trains participants to make big movements. You can search for an LSVT-trained professional near you.

How To Exercise With Parkinsons

Whether you’re a first-time exerciser or a lifelong athlete, the key to working out with Parkinsons is to safely and regularly move your body in a variety of ways. Your fitness regimen should include these four main categories of exercise:

  • Aerobic activity
  • Balance, agility, and multi-task exercises

People with Parkinsons should strive to perform aerobic activity at least three times weekly and to complete exercises from the other categories two to three times each week.

In total, the Parkinsons Foundation suggests performing 150 minutes of moderate tovigorous exercise weekly.

To help you achieve this goal, try these helpful tips:

  • Invest in a treadmill, elliptical, or exercise bike. This will make it convenient to perform aerobic exercise from your home, regardless of the weather.
  • Obtain a set of light hand weights from a local exercise shop or thrift store. These can be used for a wide variety of strength training exercises.
  • Follow along with one of the many online exercise classes on YouTube that are tailored to people with Parkinsons disease. The Parkinsons Foundation and the Davis Phinney Foundation offer many great online exercise videos.
  • Connect with a workout buddy by finding a local Parkinsons support group associated with the American Parkinson Disease Association

What You May Not Know About Parkinsons Disease

Parkinsons disease can affect a persons movement, balance and posture it can result in shaking, fatigue and rigidity. It can affect swallowing and affect your parents ability to get a good nights sleep. There is no cure for Parkinsons but there are medications, therapies and regimens that can help.

Medications such as levodopa and dopamine agonists can be effective but dosages need to be closely and continually monitored and adjusted as needed as the disease progresses, and care providers need to be aware of significant side effects.

How Hard Should I Exercise If I Have Parkinsons Disease

Parkinsons Disease Exercise: Rising from a seated position

A rating of perceived exertion is a good way to measure intensity. On a scale from 0 to 10, 0 would be how you feel while sitting or lying down, while 10 would be the maximum effort you can give. Building up to an effort between 5 to 8 means you are exercising at a high intensity. A good gauge is, if you can have a conversation with someone while exercising, you should probably increase your intensity.

Strength Training Helps Build Muscle Mass

Strength training can involve lifting weights, using machines at the gym, using your own body weight for resistance, or even using common household items like a milk jug filled with sand, the Parkinsons Foundation notes. Your strength training should focus on the following muscle groups:

  • Hands and wrists

In general, strength training should be done two to three times per week, but scheduled so that youre not targeting the same muscles on consecutive days, as your muscles need to rest and recover, the foundation advises.

As with stretching exercises, strength training can be performed while standing, sitting, or while on the ground.

The Wisconsin Parkinson Association recommends several exercises to help strengthen your grip and improve your reach. Tasks such as handwriting and reaching for items on higher shelves can be a challenge for people with Parkinsons disease, and hand exercises can help minimize these issues.

In general, resistance training helps build and maintain muscle mass, Subramanian says. The stronger you are, the more independent youll be.

Determined, consistent, and tenacious are just a few words I like to use to describe my Parkinson’s Disease “fighters.” I call them “fighters” because instead of lying down and giving up, they have chosen to take charge of their future. They commit to FIGHT BACK against Parkinson’s Disease, and that is a “fight” I want to join!

You must observe how the “fighter” moves, processes information, and responds to challenges. As personal trainers, we utilize that information and create fitness programs to address the motor symptoms those living with Parkinson’s Disease struggle with every day.
