Parkinsons Foundation: 2021 Community Grants Program

Parkinsons Foundation is accepting applications for the 2021 Community Grants Program to further the health, wellness and education of people with Parkinsons disease across the nation.
The Foundation funds programs that make an impact in local PD communities. They fund programs that are impactful, sustainable, scalable and measurable. In addition, the programs they fund serve new and existing grant-supported areas and/or pilot programs through:
- Wellness and Exercise Programs
- Voice/Music/Art Therapy Programs
The 2021 grant cycle will focus on:
- Services for diverse and underserved populations
- Initiatives that reach the newly diagnosed
- Programs that address mental health and Parkinsons disease.
Funding Information
- Community grants range from $5,000 to $25,000 per grant application. Award recipients will be announced in June 2021. The grant funding period will occur from July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022.
Eligibility Criteria
- The community grants program is open to communities nationwide. Eligible organizations must operate on the local level . Applications will be limited to the following categories of applicants:
- Non-profit and other tax-exempt organizations
- Other organizations
- Healthcare facilities.

Retrospective Datamining And Planning Projects
The Parkinson Study Group has funding available for investigators seeking initial support for Parkinsons disease research. Candidates propose a hypothesis driven, one year research plan for a retrospective data-mining research project in Parkinsons disease using PSG databases. Funds have been provided by the Parkinsons Foundation to the PSG to support retrospective data-mining projects.

Seek The Counsel Of A Social Security Attorney When Applying For Disability With Parkinsons Disease
If you or a member of your family has been diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease, the symptoms which prompted the diagnosis may also serve as the qualifications for Social Security Disability benefits.

Parkinsons Foundation Awards $22m In Community Health Grants

The Parkinsons Foundation has awarded over $2.2 million in community health grants to 143 programs that will benefit Parkinsons disease patients across 42 U.S. states, as well as efforts in Australia and Taiwan.
This years grants, which mark the programs 10th year, range from $5,000 to a maximum of $25,000 and aim to support local health, wellness, and educational programs. Of the $2.2 million, $1.6 million will fund programs for diverse and underserved Parkinsons communities.

Gum Disease Periodontitis Linked To Increased Risk Of Parkinsons
The Foundation also announced the new George G. Kaufman 2021 Impact Awards, in memory of Kaufmans efforts to find a cure for Parkinsons disease. This award was made possible due to a $1 million donation from his wife, Mimi Winter.
A postdoctoral fellowship, the 2021 James R. Jim Bob Moffett, also was awarded by the Foundation. This grant, named in memory of Moffetts dedication to support Parkinsons research, will allow the study of sleep dysregulation mechanisms in patients with the disease.
Sleep problems are a common symptom of Parkinsons disease and in some cases an early warning sign before motor symptoms set in. It remains largely unexplored whether sleep regulation and degeneration pathways have common molecular components, said Daniel Silverman, PhD, the inaugural grant recipient from The Regents of the University of California, Berkeley.
It is exhilarating to be able to investigate sleep physiology and its dysregulation in PD, and I am very grateful to the Parkinsons Foundation for the fellowship support, Silverman added.
The grant applications are evaluated by a panel of scientific experts, including members of the Foundations scientific advisory board and Foundation-trained research advocates. Research advocates are either patients or caregivers who can provide scientists with the patient perspective and their real-world experiences to help accelerate research.

Under Medicaid, some family members can be paid as caregivers.

PCA stands for Personal Care Assistance or Personal Care Attendant and PCS for Personal Care Services. These are regular Medicaid programs that will pay a caregiver to come to ones home and provide personal care such as assistance with the activities of daily living An especially attractive element of these programs is the fact that often times, the paid caregiver can be someone familiar to the individual with Parkinsons. Friends and certain family members can be hired as paid caregivers. The downside of PCA / PCS programs are that the hourly wage that caregivers receive is very low and this is an optional Medicaid benefit. This means not every state offers this option as part of their regular Medicaid programs. A list of states which do offer PCS can be found here. Be aware that this list is not exhaustive and if one does not see their state listed, they should also inquire with their state Medicaid office if such a program is available in their state.

Every one of these grant recipients shares our commitment to making life better for people with Parkinsons disease, he added.
Three main areas of intervention services for diverse and underserved populations, initiatives for newly diagnosed patients, and programs addressing mental health and Parkinsons were the focus of this years grants.
As such, the programs funded include wellness, dance, and music therapy, plus educational classes that help to improve quality of life.
One grant recipient is a team of researchers at the University of Texas at Tyler that is developing a telehealth program addressing life quality through a focus on mental health and wellness support sessions.
Thanks to the generous support of the Parkinsons Foundation, the University of Texas at Tylers Parkinsons team will be able to provide mental health and wellness programs via telehealth for people with Parkinsons disease and their care partners in the East Texas region, said Julie Hebert, clinical assistant professor, coordinator of the master of Occupational Therapy program at the university.
We truly appreciate this opportunity to support and provide resources to rural communities who have had limited access to needed Parkinsons programs in the past, she added.
One of two grants supporting programs outside the U.S. went to the Monash Medical Centre in Australia, developing rehabilitative strategies for people with Parkinsons disease.
Parkinson’s Foundation Awards Research Grants Totaling $43 Million
The Parkinson’s Foundation has announced twenty-nine grants totaling $4.3 million in support of Parkinson’s disease research.
With the goal of advancing new therapies and treatments for the ten million individuals living with PD worldwide, the grants will fund studies focused on the underlying causes and basic biology of the debilitating neurological disease. This year’s grants include the George G. Kaufman 2021 Impact Awards established in memory of the economist and his passion for ending Parkinson’s, with a $1 million donation from his widow, Mimi Winter which will support high-risk, high-reward projects that could lead to new treatments.
In addition, the new 2021 James R. “Jim Bob” Moffett, Sr. Postdoctoral Fellowship named for the oil exploration and copper and gold mining magnate was awarded to Daniel Silverman, who will investigate sleep physiology and its dysregulation in PD.
“The Parkinson’s Foundation has doubled in size over the last four years, allowing us to increase our overall investment in research. The scientists we are funding are working in critical areas of Parkinson’s disease research,” said Parkinson’s Foundation president and CEO John L. Lehr. “By focusing on the basic biology of the disease and investing in the world’s best scientists, the foundation is paving the way for important breakthroughs in Parkinson’s research in the coming years.”

Parkinsons Foundation Opens 2022 Community Grant Applications
Applications are open for the Parkinsons Foundation 2022 community grant cycle, with $1 million to be awarded to help fund community-based health, wellness, and education programs supporting those affected by Parkinsons disease.
Since 1957, the Foundation has invested more than $400 million toward Parkinsons research and clinical care. More than $7.4 million has been invested in community-based programs since 2011.
With nearly 60,000 new cases of Parkinsons diagnosed each year in the U.S., this years grant cycle will focus on programs to support those who are newly diagnosed, as well as programs that help educate and deliver exercises specifically designed for people with Parkinsons.

Tai chi is an internal exercise system that combines breathing with slow, gentle movements to improve the flow of energy through the body, to quiet and calm the mind and emotions and improve overall health and well-being.
Tai chi has been found to be effective in reducing falls, which could be of extreme importance for those with Parkinsons, who many times see their balance deteriorate as their condition progresses.
The Parkinsons Foundation seeks to enhance life for patients by improving care and driving investigations toward a cure.
All funded programs are designed to help Parkinsons patients live better-quality lives. They include education, wellness, dance, art, boxing, cycling, yoga, nutrition, caregiver support, and music therapy.
Researchers have found that Parkinsons patients who exercise at least two-and-a-half hours a week also experience a slower decline in their quality of life. Specifically, more recent studies have focused on the concept of intense forced exercise, such as boxing, suggesting that certain types of exercise may be neuroprotective by actually slowing disease progression.
Yoga focused on mindfulness a mental exercise focused on accepting oneself in the present also has been found to lower anxiety, depression and motor impairment in people with mild-to-moderate Parkinsons disease.

The Swedish Parkinson Foundation Grants Several Scc Projects
The Foundation supports research aiming to elucidate the mechanisms behind Parkinsons disease with the vision of improved treatments as well as prevention of the disease.
This year’s annual announcement of granted project proposals from The Swedish Parkinson Foundation revealed a total support of 7 million SEK, from which over a million SEK went to stem cell-based projects at the SCC. We wish to congratulate our recipients:

For the 2022 competitive grants cycle, funds will support health, wellness and education programs that address unmet needs in the Parkinsons disease community. Applications are due Jan. 28, 2022, and can be submitted electronically at Parkinson.org/CommunityGrants.
The Parkinsons Foundation community grants showcase our continued commitment to make an impact in local Parkinsons disease communities across the country, said John L. Lehr, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Parkinsons Foundation. Last year, we supported programs in 42 states that provide services for people who are in areas underserved by care programs and resources.
The 2022 grant cycle will focus on programs that:
- Educate and deliver exercise specifically designed for people with PD
- Reach community members who are newly diagnosed
- Address mental health and PD
Brain Circuit Affected By Parkinsons Similar Disorders Mapped In Detail
Surmeier will receive $9 million over three years for his project, Distributed circuit dysfunction underlying motor and sleep deficits in a progressive mouse model of Parkinsons disease. It will investigate how brain dysfunction in Parkinsons may begin in particular brain circuits, and how these impairments can then progress into the motor and sleeping challenges experienced by patients.
The goal, according to Surmeier, is to diagnose Parkinsons earlier in the disease process, and increase the chances of preventing its progression.
As principal investigator, Surmeier will collaborate with a multi-institutional team that includes Rui Costa, PhD, associate director and CEO of Columbia Universitys Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute, in New York Yang Dan, PhD, a neurobiology professor at University of California, Berkeley Silvia Arber, PhD, of the National Academy of Sciences and a researcher at the University of Basel, in Switzerland Jun Ding, PhD, a professor of neurosurgery and neurology at Stanford University, in California and Ann Kennedy, PhD, also a professor at Northwesterns Feinberg School of Medicine.
Additionally, Surmeier hopes this work will allow for better treatments with various medication- and gene-based therapies once Parkinsons does appear.
Identifying the deficits in brain function that are happening early in Parkinsons disease should help us develop assays that will lead to earlier clinical diagnosis, Surmeier said.
