    Two Sarasota charitable foundations are vying for supremacy in the hearts of the Parkinson’s disease community of Southwest Florida, offering overlapping patient support services and competing for the same donors.

    The leaders of both organizations demonstrate long experience with the crippling and incurable neurological disorder that makes movement increasingly difficult. Both profess a deep love for Parkinson’s patients and their caregivers.

    But they don’t appear to love each other.

    Based on interviews with members of the local Parkinson’s community, the emerging rivalry between the two groups appears to be distressing and alienating some patients, health care providers and donors. Individuals say they are reluctant to speak on the record, for fear of offending whichever side prevails. But in an era of stagnant charitable giving, this duplication of effort threatens to drain a limited local pool of funds for health care philanthropy.

    As with most disease-focused charities, Parkinson’s foundations get most of their funds from donors who are also patients, or who know someone who is. And Southwest Florida’s relatively high concentration of wealthy elders makes this a logical place to locate such a charity. But having two of them on the same turf can be quite a disaster, says Dot Ridings, a former Bradenton publisher and past president of the Council on Foundations in Washington, D.C.

    The new Parkinson Research Foundation Center of Excellence at USF Health is staffed by, l to r, Dr. Juan Sanchez-Ramos Kelly Sullivan, MSPH Lisé Casady, MSCN, ARNP-C and Dr. Theresa Zesiewicz.

    Tampa, FL The Parkinsons Research Foundation will establish a new PRF Center of Excellence at USF Health to expand research, programs and services for Parkinsons patients and their caregivers, primarily in the greater Tampa Bay area. The center has already received funding and future commitments for $175,000 from PRF.

    Parkinsons is so tricky to treat effectively, and unfortunately too many patients with this age-related neurodegenerative disease dont have the opportunity to see neurologists who specialize in movement disorders, said Larry Hoffheimer, chairman and founder of the Sarasota-based PRF. We want to work with USF to reach out to a wider patient community and improve their quality of life through education and the highest standard of care. That includes research to determine what medications and therapies work best.

    The grant will allow USF Health to increase clinical services, conduct more clinical trials and further support basic and translational research on its North campus. The PRF Center of Excellences daily Parkinsons clinics are expected to move into the Carol and Frank Morsani Center for Advanced Healthcare by the end of the year.
