Charity Navigator Parkinson’s Foundation

Best And Worst Charities For Your Donations

Parkinsonâs Foundation Earns 4-Star Rating from Charity Navigator

Important tips to keep in mind in the season of giving

Editors Note: Consumer Reports has not updated the specific charities mentioned in this story since November 2019. If youre looking for tips on choosing a charity, you can vet the charities youre considering by checking the websites of the watchdog organizations mentioned here.

During the holidays, many consumers receive a multitude of donation requests from charitable organizations, as well as crowdfunding sites and other online giving platforms.

A charitys name may signal worthy a cause, such as feeding the hungry or supporting veterans. But you need to look carefully at the organization to make sure you are sending your money to the right place.

You dont want to choose a charity by the name alone, since your donation may go to a questionable group, says Bennett Weiner, chief operating officer of the charity watchdog BBB Wise Giving Alliance. Some organizations may spend too much on administrative and fundraising costs or are outright scammers.

Vetting charities is especially important now because December is typically the largest month for giving. According to a recent report by the Blackbaud Institute for Philanthropic Impact, 17 percent of contributions were made during December last year.

The best course of action before giving is to check out the charity with one or more of the major charity watchdogs, including the BBB Wise Giving Alliance, Charity Navigator, and CharityWatch.

During Times Of Crises What Should Organizations Really Be Focusing On

Before COVID hit, as I mentioned, we were really on pace to have a blockbuster year. Weve been on a pretty good ride here and were very much in growth mode, programmatically and operationally. We were really pushing many, many things forward and it was really a very exciting time. Then obviously COVID hit and very quickly we saw the revenue turn upside down.

So as you know, the first and most important thing any organization needs to think about is preserving the mission of the organization. In our case, thats continuing to serve people with Parkinsons.

But then also preserving the organization itself and making sure that we are in the best position to weather this tough storm. So we took a number of quick defensive measures. You know, we did a cash flow analysis to have a better idea of how much money we need to have on hand to pay staff and to make sure that the lights stay on. So much of our mission is delivered by our staff and by our team, so we really wanted to make sure that they were taken care of first and foremost. But then we also started forecasting and thinking, Okay based on the data that we have, how long can we run at this level? How long can we run at that level? Were based on an academic fiscal year, July 1st to June 30th. So were coming up on the end of our fiscal year and starting to think about budgeting for next year.

In Your Opinion What Do You Think Are Some Of The Common Themes Of A Successful Nonprofit

You know, I think its important for any organization, regardless of size, to be very clear about what their vision is. Almost every nonprofit I know has a vision statement, which is your big aspirational view on what your organization is trying to do. In our case, its ultimately trying to find a cure for Parkinsons disease. We also know thats a huge undertaking, so in the meantime, we have our mission, which is to ensure that people are living well with Parkinsons, and ensuring that our community is maintaining their health, their quality of life, and that they are working through what is a very difficult journey with the resources to make the best of it.

Beyond just our mission and vision, we have what we call our guiding principles. In our case, its putting people with Parkinsons first in any decision we ever make. We ask ourselves, does this ultimately help people with Parkinsons? A question worth coming back to again and again is:

What are we doing today, with the resources we have, to advance our mission and ultimately move toward accomplishing our vision?

If you keep that front and center and keep that focus, it will keep you from making missteps and from chasing shiny objects. Im just always coming back to why, Why are we doing this? What is it all about?

John L Lehr Of The Parkinsons Foundation: Optimal Performance Before High Pressure Moments How To Relieve Stress Clear Your Head And Prepare Yourself For High Stakes Business Encounters

Always stay focused on mission and what is in the best interest of the community you are serving this will help limit distractions. Ask a lot of questions. Asking why is very effective, provided you answer candidly and ultimately reach an endpoint. Solicit the advice of talented people, so you have the best information to take a course of action or make a decision. Dont be afraid of making mistakes the great household product WD-40 is named that way because it took 40 tries to get it right.

As a part of our series about Optimal Performance Before High Pressure Moments,

I had the pleasure of interviewingJohn L. Lehr, president and CEO of the Parkinsons Foundation.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Before we dive into the main focus of our interview, our readers would love to get to know you a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your childhood backstory?

I am the youngest of six children, born in Chicago, but raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Being the youngest was great, as my parents were more relaxed, and I had the benefit of learning from the experiences of my older siblings. As a child, I played a lot of sports , and then gradually became interested in music, ultimately forming a band with my best friend. We played in the band through college, which was great fun.

What or who inspired you to pursue your career as a nonprofit leader? Wed love to hear the story.
