Libby Kennard Parkinsons Resources Of Oregon Program Coordinator

Before taking the position as program coordinator with Parkinsons Resources of Oregon about four years ago, Libby Kennard lived in Colorado where she was clinical director of a large senior living community.PRO, based in Lake Oswego, has been around for more than 35 years, and the Eugene office is the only satellite branch. The main PRO office covers southwest Washington, all of Oregon and sometimes Northern California. We help connect people to resources, says Kennard.

When Libby first joined the Lane County team, the position was part time. A funding grant provided free office space, and a local hearing center hosted their support groups. When the hearing center closed, she was faced with needing to find appropriate space. And quickly.

I thought I could work from home, she recalls. I thought, Ive got a computer, a cell phone. I dont need a lot. But that did not work out.

Libby found herself working out of her car as she drove around. I was disorganized, she says. I needed to find something else because my clients couldnt speak confidentially if we met at a coffee shop. Libby uses the conference space at Eugene Mindworks quite a bit. Its hard to find conference space that you can count on, she says.

Information To Have Ready For Our Team

If youre calling the office for help or coming to an appointment, please have answers to these questions ready:

What is the specific problem? Are you having pain, balance issues or other worsening symptoms, for example?

When did the problem start? Be as specific as possible. Share the date and time of day.

Is it constant or does it come and go? If it comes and goes, do you notice a pattern? For example, is it connected to when you take medications or to a time of day?

Where is the problem? Left hand? Right foot? Be as specific as possible.

What happens during episodes? Describe a typical incident: My right hand tremor worsens and becomes jerky, and my right foot starts to jerk, too.

What makes the problem better orworse? Bring information on treatments, positions or medications that help or dont help.

How would you rate the problem on a 0-10 scale and why? In addition to rating the physical effects, you may want to assign numbers for how much it bothers you and affects your quality of life: Although its about a 5, or moderately disabling, its an 8 because its so distressing.

What medications are you taking? When you come to appointments, bring a full list of your medications for Parkinsons and other conditions. Include:

  • Time of day or how often you take each.

Who We Are

When Parkinsons Resources of Oregon was founded in 1980, the principles of peer support and the power of information were key to the mission, placing the client and client needs at the center of all interactions. Over the years, this community we serve has benefited immensely by the labors of dedicated volunteers and the partnerships of clinicians, researchers and service providers along the way.

PRO serves the residents of both Oregon and southern Washington from our offices in Beaverton, Eugene and Bend. What started as a single support group in 1980 has grown and flourished as visionary volunteers and instrumental philanthropists helped set direction and strategy to provide for the needs of thousands of individuals living with a diagnosis of Parkinsons disease.

We are governed by a volunteer board of directors and more than two hundred additional volunteers are active with our support groups, program planning, committee work, and office support.

What We Do

Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon helps patients and caregivers manage Parkinson’s disease with helpful programs and services. We are dedicated to meeting the support needs of the Parkinson’s community of Oregon and Southern Washington. We step in to help the patient and family where the medical team leaves off. Whether the need is for basic symptom information, or assistance with locating respite care, PRO has the caring and compassionate staff and volunteers necessary for a valuable and prompt response.
