Does Cbd Help Parkinson’s Disease

What Does The Fda Say About Using Cbd Oil For Parkinsons

Cannabis and Parkinson’s Disease

CBD oil hasnt been approved by the FDA as a treatment for Parkinsons disease. In fact, there are no FDA-approved cannabis treatments for this condition as of today. However, the FDA did acknowledge a CBD-based medication, Epidiolex, to treat two types of drug-resistant epilepsy.

Researchers from the University of Colorado are using Epidiolex to analyze its benefits on people with Parkinsons-triggered tremors. The study is currently in its second stage.

Studies Show Cbd Is Effective For Parkinsons Disease

The findings below suggest that CBD may promote several vital processes relevant to the prevention and treatment of Parkinsons Disease, such as:

  • Antioxidant protection of neurons
  • Psychosis treatment
  • Overall quality of life improvements.

As mentioned, the endocannabinoid system is active in the area of the brain affected by Parkinsons Disease, but CBD also interacts with outside receptors to address PD symptoms.

For example, University of Louisville researchers discovered that CBD acts as an inverse agonist at GPR 6 receptors , which have been associated with dopamine reduction.

Through these mechanisms and others, CBD is showing promise as a viable treatment for PD symptoms.

Heres what the research has to say.

Training And Coaching Of Trial Therapists

Before the start of the trial, participating speech therapists follow a 2-day training in which they are informed about the study procedures and the PERSPECTIVE intervention protocol, including delivering online treatment. During the study period, speech therapists will be coached online by one of two experts to ensure that every patient receives optimal speech therapy. These experts have been responsible for the education of speech therapists in ParkinsonNet and the development of the voice trainer. Coaching of speech therapists takes place in a group video call with the coach, speech therapist, and patient during three online treatment sessions , in which the coach provides live feedback to the speech therapist.

  • Becoming irritated when the person cannot communicate.
  • Isolating the person with PD:
  • Trying to get them to talk while they are walking.

Uncertain Responses To Cbd

How Does CBD Help Parkinsons Disease? Paisley Ox

Both men completed the CBD trial. Neither felt any positive effects after taking the drug, although their experiences were different.

Mullen thinks he got the placebo. I kept wanting to feel something different, he said, but I didnt feel anything. He is anxious to see the results of the trial and added that he would still be willing to take CBD to treat his Parkinsons disease symptoms.

Preusser is convinced that he did get the CBD, explaining that after the first administration he felt lightheaded. Things werent quite as concrete and were more ethereal than how I commonly perceive my surroundings, he said.

The dizziness forced him to go to another room at the clinic to lie down. He said at his second visit, he got half the dose, which seemed to diminish the side effect.

But like Mullen, Preusser said he derived no benefit from whatever he took. I didnt notice any diminishment of my tremor or change in my level of cognition, he said. He remains open, however, to the idea that CBD could help some people with Parkinsons disease.

I understand that every patient is different, he said. It may work miracles for the next guy. For me, not so, but there may be a point when I might reconsider or something may prompt a different assessment.

How To Administer Cbd For Parkinsons Disease

If youre about to use CBD for the first time, you may be wondering how to take it the right way to maximize the benefits for Parkinsons disease.

You can buy CBD in various forms, including:

  • CBD oil . CBD can be swallowed or absorbed sublingually . This is a good option if you dont like to take capsules and want to precisely measure out your dose. The calming effects of CBD usually take hold around 15-30 minutes after ingestion and may last for up to 6 hours.
  • Capsules. This form of CBD is a good option if youre looking for a premeasured dose of CBD in your supplement. You just take as many capsules as recommended by your physician. The downside of taking CBD capsules is their delayed onset and lower bioavailability since they have to pass through the digestive system before reaching the bloodstream.
  • Edibles.CBD-infused is becoming more popular these days. Gummies are by far the most common option. They work in a similar manner to capsules. They usually kick in after 40120 minutes and last for up to 10 hours. Edibles are a discreet way to deliver a dose of CBD.
  • Topicals. Products like lotions and creams may be effective for localized problems because they deliver the CBD to the cannabinoid receptors located in the deeper layer of the skin. From there, CBD can produce its soothing effects on the body, reducing inflammation, stiffness, and pain.

Can You Use Cbd Oil As A Prevention For Parkinsons

Studies have suggested that CBD may be able to help prevent Parkinsons disease, but the current data comes only from animal models.

The research also suggests that CBD can do nothing to help treat PD after its onset. Based on this, it may only be useful as a preventive supplement.

However, most clinical trials only use CBD after a person is diagnosed with Parkinsons disease. This is important because about 60 percent of the dopamine-receptive neurons in the brain are already destroyed by the time a person begins showing the symptoms of their condition.

Its also difficult to predict who will develop Parkinsons and who will be more resistant to this disease. There are only a few preventive strategies, and thus far, we dont know if CBD can help everyone.

Study Probes Whether Cbd Helps For Parkinsons Disease Symptoms

In November 2012, Colorado got plenty of buzz as the first state in the nation to pass an amendment legalizing marijuana. The retail sale of recreational marijuana followed in January 2014. Shops peddling the drug soon sprouted across the landscape from street corners to strip malls.

But if marijuana is now a fixture of everyday life in Colorado, questions about it continue. One of the most intriguing is the potential cannabis has to treat a host of ailments, including inflammatory bowel disorder, chronic pain, sleep loss, epilepsy and Parkinsons disease. With legalization, researchers finally had an opportunity to lead controlled clinical trials to test the anecdotal evidence patients have offered of marijuanas medical benefits.

There have been many obstacles, however, as Dr. Maureen Leehey, a neurologist at the UCHealth Neurosciences Center and Professor of Neurology with the University of Colorado School of Medicine, can attest. Her experience illustrates the difficulties of conducting evidence-based research into the medical effectiveness of marijuana. Despite its popularity, the drug still must clear significant regulatory hurdles before research yields any solid answers about its benefits to patients.

Cbd Improves The Quality Of Life For Pd Patients

CBD Oil For Parkinson’s Disease – Can CBD Help? WARNING – See This Before Trying

Living with Parkinsons isnt easy. This disease, which only gets worse with time, can seriously jeopardize a persons ability to lead a normal life. Luckily, studies show that CBD treatment can offer some relief:

  • A study of 21 PD patients that used CBD and a placebo found that the participants who received CBD experienced improvements in their quality of life after just six weeks.
  • Another study on CBD oil and Parkinsonsthat included 119 patients also pointed out that CBD plays a significant role in the patients well-being and quality of life. And even though motor and general symptoms did not improve, findings showed a higher quality of life score.

Cbd Side Effects And Risks

In most studies, CBD is tolerated well. It rarely causes side effects, and the ones that do happen tend to be mild. They include tiredness, changes in appetite, and diarrhea or nausea.

However, CBD can interact with prescription and over-the-counter medications. Talk to your doctor before taking CBD, especially if youre on medications that contain a grapefruit warning. CBD and grapefruit have a similar effect on certain enzymes related to drug metabolism.

Overall Completeness And Applicability Of Evidence

Outcome measures

It can be argued that intelligibility is the most critical outcome to be measured in speech and language therapy trials. If this global measure does not improve then it is irrelevant to the patient how many other objective speech quality measures improve they still cannot be understood. All included trials assessed intelligibility and almost all results were not statistically significant. The exception to this was the perceptual ratings of speech recordings overlaid with babble noise for which LSVTLOUD gave a greater improvement than LSVTARTIC . The noninferiority of online delivery of LSVT was supported by the intelligibility results of Constantinescu 2011, who reported no statistically significant difference between the improvements in both acoustic and perceptual measures for this group and the facetoface delivery group.

The prosodic abnormality score, which assesses volume, pitch, tone, intonation, vocal quality , rate and rhythm, does not appear to have been independently assessed for validity.

Adverse events were not reported by any of the trials included in this review. Although the risk associated with speech and language therapy is low, patients could be affected by vocal strain or abuse during high effort exercises.

How Can Someone With Parkinsons Disease Access Speech And Language Therapy

A doctor or consultant can provide a referral to a Speech and Language Therapist working in the HSE. However, there is unfortunately a shortage of qualified Speech and Language Therapists working in the HSE in Ireland.

Self-referral to see a private Speech and Language Therapist is also possible. The Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Private Practice site can help find a private practitioner in specific area. Their website is available at: www. iasltpp.com

Many Speech and Language Therapists working in the HSE or in private practice are trained to administer the Lee Silverman Voice Therapy. Details of Speech and Language Therapists trained in LSVT around the world can be obtained from the LSVT Global website on http://www.lsvtglobal.com.

If a person with PD decides to seek private treatment they will have to pay for the treatment. However, there may be some reimbursement for speech and language therapy under private health insurance schemes. People with PD will need to check their individual policy for specific reimbursement entitlements. Tax relief may be obtained on speech and language therapy fees .

If A Person With Pd Finds His/herself In A Loud Room Trying To Have A Conversation What Are Some Tips To Keep In Mind

Many people have difficulty conversing in noisy rooms, and it can be so frustrating that people start avoiding social situations or dont attempt to engage with others. In these situations, it is particularly important to be aware of your speaking volume. In addition to this, try these simple things:

  • Make sure that you have the visual attention of your listener so that they know you are trying to communicate with them.
  • Stand closer to the person whom you are talking to or ask if you can step out to a quieter area.
  • Make sure that you are standing in good lighting this will enable the other person to see your lips and expressions.
  • Check in with your listener, Can you hear me okay?
  • Be clear about the topic of conversation. If your listener knows the topic, it will help them predict what words you might be apt to use.
  • If you are misunderstood, try to rephrase your message using alternate words and shorter sentences.
  • Use gestures and any other nonverbal communication to supplement your words.

Lets Talk About Talking With Parkinsons Disease

Communication issues can become a problem for people living with Parkinsons disease . Recently APDA published a new booklet entitled Make Your Voice Heard! Healthy Communication and Parkinsons Disease which can be downloaded from our website for free or ordered by mail at no cost to you. Lisa Sommers, MA, CCC-SLP Clinic Director and Clinical Assistant Professor, in the Department of Communication Disorders at University of Massachusetts Amherst, is a Speech-Language Pathologist and an expert in speech and communication issues for people with PD and was one of the authors of this extremely informative publication. She is also an advisor to our APDA Massachusetts Chapter. Recently, I was able to talk with Ms. Sommers about the value of speech therapy for people with PD at all stages of the condition and what someone with PD might expect from a visit with an SLP.

Mitochondria Microbiota And Marijuana

CBD for Parkinson’s with Dr. Frank Michalski

The microbiome also plays an important role in the health of our mitochondria, which are present in every cell in the brain and body . Mitochondria function not only as the cells power plant they also are involved in regulating cell repair and cell death. Dysfunction of the mitochondria, resulting in high levels of oxidative stress, is intrinsic to PD neurodegeneration. Microbes produce inflammatory chemicals in the gut that seep into the bloodstream and damage mitochondria, contributing to disease pathogenesis not only in PD but many neurological and metabolic disorders, including obesity, type-2 diabetes, and Alzheimers.

The evidence that gut dysbiosis can foster the development of PD raises the possibility that those with the disease could benefit by manipulating their intestinal bacteria and improving their microbiome. Enhancing ones diet with fermented foods and probiotic supplements may improve gut health and relieve constipation, while also reducing anxiety, depression and memory problems that afflict PD patients.

Cannabis therapeutics may also help to manage PD symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. Acclaimed neurologist Sir William Gowers was the first to mention cannabis as a treatment for tremors in 1888. In his Manual of Diseases of the Nervous System, Grower noted that oral consumption of an Indian hemp extract quieted tremors temporarily, and after a year of chronic use the patients tremors nearly ceased.

Best Cbd Oil For Treating Parkinsons

Which CBD oil is best for Parkinsons disease depends on several factors. The only way you can make sure that you buy a high-quality CBD product is to shop smart.

  • Read the label. Check how much CBD and THC the product contains.
  • Check for third-party testing. Companies with independent evaluation facilities that test their products usually provide higher quality.
  • Check online reviews to make an informed and educated decision.
  • Check the sourcing location. Knowing where the product comes from and how the plant is grown is essential. Namely, some states require growers to adhere to stricter quality assurance regulations regarding the use of pesticides or chemicals.
  • Check the oil type. Full or broad-spectrum CBD oil will probably be better than an isolate.
  • Choose where you buy CBD. The best place to find CBD oil is from licensed dispensaries.

What Are The Common Reasons That Someone With Pd May See A Speech

Often people with PD are referred to an SLP by their physician when they begin to have difficulty communicating or swallowing. Unfortunately, by the time people receive an evaluation from a SLP they have likely been experiencing subtle symptoms for quite a while. People with PD as well as their family members and friends often start being aware of communication issues when the person with PDs voice becomes too soft to communicate effectively. The communication symptoms begin very gradually, so they may first experience difficulty projecting their voice in a noisy environment, or when ordering at a drive-thru window. Over time they begin to experience more and more issues being heard and understood by others. Some people may gradually develop some imprecise/slurred speech and/or a hoarse or breathy voice quality. Communication can also be negatively impacted by changes in nonverbal communication, such as reduced facial expression and speaking with a monotone inflection.

Swallowing issues are often not detected until the person with PD is coughing significantly during meals or struggling to chew and swallow food safely and efficiently. The changes in swallowing can also happen so gradually that people assume symptoms are just related to aging or some other external factor, when in reality, these changes are directly related to the sensory and motor issues associated with PD.
