The Chemistry Between Grace And Frankie’s Sol And Robert Could Have Been Better
Grace and Frankie leaves something to be desired when it comes to the show’s queerness, and it’s not just because the premise of Grace and Frankie‘s husbands being together was an afterthought when creating the show. Rather, the chemistry between Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen falls flat on more than one occasion, according to an article in Mic.
Mainly, the relationship between the two men reads more like they’re two good friends, instead of two lovers who can finally be together after 20 years of secrecy. And yes, you can attribute some of that to them being older men who’ve been together for a long time. But given how passionate these actors have been in shows like Law & Order and The West Wing, you know they have to chops needed to convey a passionate relationship. It wouldn’t need to be graphic, either just more believable in their tender moments.
Perhaps that was just one more nail in the coffin for Grace and Frankie.
Sam Waterston Law And Order
Law and Order were filmed on location in New York, the drama showcases the sometimes-complex process of determining guilt or innocence, while lives hang in the balance. Often inspired by the latest headlines, the plots highlight legal, ethical or personal dilemmas to which people can relate.
During his 16-season stint on Law & Order, Waterston won a Screen Actors Guild award for best actor in a drama series and earned three Emmy nominations in the same category. Since Law & Order, he was gone on to roles in Aaron Sorkins HBO drama The Newsroom as well as movies including Miss Sloane and Please Be Normal.
Law & Order: SVU is poised to host both a crossover and a reunion in the same episode when franchise veteran Sam Waterston guest-stars as District Attorney Jack McCoy, reprising his 16-season role from Dick Wolfs flagship drama. Waterston returns for Wednesdays episode, The Undiscovered Country, an hour exploring a familys right-to-die court case.
As The Hollywood Reporter revealed at the beginning of SVUs current, 19th season, the guest spot reunites the Grace and Frankie star with new SVU showrunner Michael Chernuchin, who worked with Waterston on the first two seasons of the mother ship and helped create the character of Jack McCoy.

The Humor On Grace And Frankie Sometimes Fell Flat
Grace and Frankie has been lauded by critics as a very funny show that’s ushered in a new age of comedy, picking up where the beloved series The Golden Girls left off. And given that it stands to become the longest-running series in Netflix history, it’s clear that plenty of people are watching the show and are laughing along with its many jokes.
But not everyone is thrilled with the brand of humor in Grace and Frankie, according to an article in Mic. Specifically, some of the jokes on the show sound like gags someone would make in the 1990s, which render them super dated. Additionally, the jokes that the women make about their ex-husbands’ sex lives are often reductive, causing them to fall flat.
Perhaps if the jokes on the show were sharper and more sophisticated, Netflix might have considered giving Grace and Frankie an eighth season.

Stars Spotlight Personal Triumphs Over Stuttering
The success of some former stutterers attending or mentioned at the American Institute for Stuttering event was testimony in itself that the condition can be overcome. The night’s emcee, Law & Order actor Sam Waterston, relayed a message from one such prominent figure.
Waterston read from a letter from Vice President Joe Biden, a former stutterer who spoke at last year’s gala, when he received the AIS’s Leadership Award for his advocacy on the condition.
“Overcoming a stutter can be difficult, and the daily struggle created by the challenge can seem overwhelming,” Biden wrote. “However, I am confident that with the help of organizations like this … great possibilities lie ahead for the nearly 3 million people affected by stuttering.”
Waterston, who has no history of stuttering, said the night was designed “to raise awareness of this often misunderstood disorder.” He later welcomed to the podium renowned journalist and author Barbara Walters, who movingly described her sister’s long struggle with stuttering.
The spotlight also fell on British film actress Emily Blunt and the New York City-born TD Ameritrade brokerage mogul Joe Moglia, both of whom found themselves in a personal struggle with stuttering from an early age. Blunt and Moglia were each honored with this year’s AIS Leadership Awards.

Grace And Frankie Wasn’t Very Realistic
What happened to the women of Grace and Frankie could happen to anyone, as , even between people who have been together for many years, according to an article in Psychology Today. Additionally, Grace and Frankie addresses other critical issues, such as Grace struggling with her cold extended family and one of Frankie’s children being in recovery for substance abuse.
But despite tackling these real-world issues, Grace and Frankie just doesn’t feel very realistic, as noted in an article in Vulture. For one, Coyote’s sobriety isn’t given the serious acknowledgement in the show that it should, as it’s treated quite superficially. Additionally, when Grace’s family disregards her, it’s made out to not be a big deal, when in reality it would be extremely difficult to deal with. And when it comes to the character meltdowns, they often can seem contrived and campy.
Perhaps if Grace and Frankie was filmed with a live studio audience, as sitcoms used to be, it would have been more successful. But ultimately, it might not have been real enough for people, ultimately leading to Netflix deciding to cancel it.

Known for her rich soprano vocals as the lead singer of the 1960s band the Stone Poneys, Linda Ronstadt opened up about her Parkinson’s disease diagnosis to AARP The Magazine in 2013. After two very bad tick bites in the 1980s, Ronstadt says her health never fully recovered but she didn’t visit a neurologist until she was no longer able to sing.
“I didn’t know why I couldn’t sing all I knew was that it was muscular or mechanical. Then when I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, I was finally given the reason. I now understand that no one can sing with Parkinson’s disease. No matter how hard you try. And in my case, I can’t sing a note,” she told AARP.

Grace And Frankie Pits Gay Men Against Aging Women
On the surface, the premise of Grace and Frankie sounds like a rich scenario to explore, something that’s only possible now that we’ve ushered in a more tolerant era. Considering that the series launched just as same-sex marriage became the law of the land in the United States in 2015, the situation explored on the show is, on its face, extremely compelling.
Unfortunately, in its execution, Grace and Frankie managed to take two marginalized groups aging women and gay men and make viewers only sympathetic to one of them: the women. Sol and Robert have been lying to their wives for 20 years, something that’s tough to swallow despite the cultural climate that prevented them from being together. And given that the show skews heavily towards the women’s perspective, according to an article in Salon, viewers are naturally more inclined to be sympathetic to their perspective. It’s only later on in the series that the men show any remorse for their actions, giving viewers a long-awaited chance to understand their plight.
Perhaps if the writers had addressed that sooner, Netflix wouldn’t have canceled Grace and Frankie.

Sam Waterston has been married twice in his life. His first marriage to Barbara Rutledge Johns was from 1964 to 1975. They got a divorce and Sam married Lynn Louisa Woodruff in 1976. They are still happily married today and have three children together.

Ben Petrick dreamed of a stellar baseball career as a catcher with the Colorado Rockies. He played in 240 Major League games, the majority of which came after Parkinson’s disease struck him at age 22 in 2000. He retired from baseball in 2004.
He’s since authored Forty Thousand to One, a book whose title in part references the 40,000 Americans diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease every year. According to an ESPN interview, Petrick’s father was also diagnosed with the condition but maintains a positive attitude, saying that although he has Parkinson’s, Parkinson’s doesn’t have him.

One of the founding members of the band Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White noted the first symptoms of Parkinson’s disease in the 1980s while the band’s popularity was going strong. Although he was diagnosed in 1992 at age 50, he kept quiet about his disease for eight years. In a 2000 interview with Rolling Stone, he discussed his diagnosis, saying, “I traveled with the band for five years with Parkinson’s. I was treating it with medication then, and I still have it under control. It’s not taking anything away from me.”
White died in 2016 at age 74.

Frederick “Freddie” Roach is a boxing trainer and former professional boxer. Bryant Gumbel included his story in the HBO series Real Sports, detailing Roach’s efforts to control his Parkinson’s disease with medication and continued work as a trainer. Roach, who began to show Parkinsons symptoms over 20 years ago, trains world-famous boxers at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California, which he owns.
