Caffeine is a stimulant, which means it can make you feel more awake. Its effects can last for 3 to 4 hours. If caffeine is affecting your body at bedtime, it can increase the time it takes you to get to sleep and make sleep lighter and more restless.

It is also important to limit the total amount of caffeine you drink during the day too.

Alcohol can make you feel sleepy. But as its effects wear off we get whats called withdrawal and that has the opposite effect. Although alcohol can help you get to sleep, the withdrawal effect can lead to restlessness and waking up during the night.

Another effect of drinking alcohol at night is nocturia the need to get up and go to the toilet, which will also disturb your sleep.

Like caffeine, nicotine is a stimulant and the effects are similar, even if you feel smoking relaxes you.

Guide To Parkinsons Disease And Sleep

Parkinsons disease is caused by a complex interaction of environmental and genetic factors.

It is the second most common degenerative disorder and affects 2% of people over the age of 65 years.

It is a progressive disorder that worsens with time.

The cardinal symptoms of PD are due to the loss of dopaminergic neurons in specific areas of the brain.

These include slow movements, tremors, muscle stiffness, and balance problems.

Patients with PD also have non-motor symptoms.

These include smell and taste problems, pain, fatigue, bladder and bowel symptoms, restless leg syndrome, sleep disorders, swallowing difficulty, excessive salivation, double vision, speech problems, mood symptoms, and postural drop of blood pressure.

The diagnosis of PD is clinical and no tests offer absolute diagnostic certainty.

The diagnosis is especially difficult in the initial stage of the disease.

Excessive Daytime Sleepiness And Pdss Scores In Parkinsons Disease

Excessive daytime sleepiness and unintended sleep episodes are increasingly being associated with motor vehicle and occupational accidents, impaired work performance, and possibly reduced quality of life. In Parkinsons disease, this issue has received much attention lately, owing to controversy surrounding a report by Frucht et al of sleep attacks, or unintended sleep episodes, leading to road traffic accidents in nine patients with Parkinsons disease taking non-ergot dopamine agonists. Rye and colleagues, however, have suggested that there is increased arousal and paradoxical alertness in patients with Parkinsons disease complaining of poor sleep. Thus the impact of nocturnal sleep disruption on excessive daytime sleepiness in Parkinsons disease is far from clear, and several reports have suggested the need for controlled studies addressing this issue. Our study indicates that poor PDSS scores, and in particular poor scores on item 15, are correlated strongly with high scores on the ESS. This is consistent with subjective reporting of patients who had poor nocturnal sleep and felt tired and sleepy during the daytime.
