Trintellix And Parkinson’s Disease

Serious Side Effects Of Trintellix

Trintellix may cause serious side effects, although this is rare. The list below may not include all possible serious side effects of the drug. For more information, including how long Trintellix side effects last, you can refer to Trintellixs medication guide.

If you develop serious side effects while taking Trintellix, call your doctor right away. If the side effects seem life threatening or you think youre having a medical emergency, immediately call 911 or your local emergency number.

Note: A missed dose of Trintellix isnt likely to cause serious side effects. However, you should not stop taking the drug without first talking with your doctor. Suddenly stopping Trintellix can cause serious side effects, including nausea, confusion, and tiredness. For more information about the dosages for Trintellix, you can see this in-depth article.

Tremor As A Side Effect From Taking Antidepressants

Is it normal to develop a tremor while taking an antidepressant? Which drugs may cause this symptom and how is it treated?

This article discusses what a tremor is, the different types of tremors, and what medications as well as medical conditions may contribute to a tremor.

Drugs That Increase The Side Effects Of Trintellix

Some drugs slow down the bodys metabolism of vortioxetine, increasing the incidence and severity of possible side effects. These include:

  • Some antidepressants like Wellbutrin , Paxil , or Prozac
  • Certain drugs that treat an irregular heart rate such as quinidine

A healthcare provider may need to decrease the Trintellix dose by as much as half when taken with these medications.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are drugs that can be used to treat depression, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Interaction result. Taking Trintellix and an SSRIcan increase the risk of serotonin syndrome* and other side effects.

Interaction explained. Trintellix and SSRIs may work in similar ways to treat your depression. Both drugs are thought to increase the level of serotonin in your body. And taking multiple drugs that affect serotonin can increase your risk of serious side effects, such as serotonin syndrome.

Examples of SSRI drugs. Here are some SSRIs that may interact with Trintellix:

Steps you or your doctor may take. Before starting Trintellix treatment, tell your doctor if you take any SSRIs. They may recommend that you avoid taking SSRIs along with Trintellix. Your doctor will recommend the best treatment plan for your depression.

However, if your doctor prescribes Trintellix with an SSRI, they may monitor you more often for symptoms of serotonin syndrome. You can also watch for these symptoms. They may include anxiety, hallucinations, sweating, and muscle spasms. If you have any of these symptoms, contact your doctor or seek emergency help right away.

Side Effects Of Using Trintellix To Treat Depression

Cognitive Difficulties During Migraine Affect Functioning

The FDA has reported and stated on the package insert that Trintellix is associated with a number of adverse side effects, some of which require cessation of the drug or reducing the dosage by half for patient safety.4 As stated above, these are not dissimilar to the adverse effects of other antidepressants.

The most common are:

Trintellix can cause many serious side effects, including suicidal thoughts, serotonin syndrome, mania, hypomania, increased bleeding, vision problems, discontinuation syndrome, and low salt levels. Be sure to keep up with your regular health care appointments.

Does Trintellix Cause Any Vision

Its possible, if you already have certain other eye conditions. But in people without existing eye conditions, Trintellix hasnt been shown to cause vision-related side effects in clinical trials.

Specifically, in people with narrow angles in their eye, antidepressants such as Trintellix can trigger a condition called angle-closure glaucoma. This condition may also be called closed-angle glaucoma. Symptoms can include:

  • changes in vision
  • redness or swelling in or around the eye

Angle-closure glaucoma is a medical emergency. If you develop the above symptoms, get medical attention right away. Go to your nearest emergency room or hospital, or talk with an eye doctor as soon as possible.

Before you begin taking Trintellix, your doctor may recommend an eye exam to check if youre at risk for angle-closure glaucoma. If youre at risk for this condition, your doctor may prescribe treatment to prevent it from developing while youre taking Trintellix.

If you notice other vision or eye-related side effects while taking Trintellix, call your doctor. They can help determine what could be causing these effects.

Note: Other drugs used to treat major depressive disorder may cause blurry vision, such as Zoloft .

Having Had An Allergic Reaction To Trintellix Or Any Of Its Ingredients

If youve had an allergic reaction to Trintellix or any of its ingredients, your doctor will likely not prescribe Trintellix. Taking the drug could cause another allergic reaction. You can ask your doctor about other treatments that may be better choices for you.

Note: Before you start treatment with Trintellix, its important to tell your doctor if either of these contraindications applies to you. They can determine whether to prescribe Trintellix.

Does Trintellix Affect Dopamine

No, Trintellix shouldnt affect dopamine levels in your body. Dopamine is a chemical messenger that helps regulate certain moods and emotions.

Instead, Trintellix works to treat depression by affecting the levels of another chemical called serotonin. Other antidepressants, such as bupropion , work by affecting the levels of dopamine and another chemical called norepinephrine.

If you have questions or concerns about how Trintellix works differently than other antidepressants, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

You can take certain steps to help prevent interactions with Trintellix. Your doctor and pharmacist are key resources, so reach out to them before starting treatment. For example, you should plan to do the following:

  • Let them know if you drink alcohol or use cannabis.
  • Tell them about any other medications you take, as well as any supplements, herbs, and vitamins.
  • Create a , which your doctor and pharmacist can help you fill out.

Its also important to read the Trintellix label and other paperwork that may come with the drug. The label may have colored stickers that mention an interaction. And the paperwork, sometimes called the medication guide or patient package insert, may contain details about interactions. If you have questions about this information, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

You can also help prevent interactions with Trintellix by taking it exactly as your doctor prescribes.

Trintellix And Blood Thinners

Trintellix raises the risk of bleeding problems, so therapy will need to be monitored if a person is also taking blood-thinners, such as warfarin or Plavix . Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , such as aspirin and ibuprofen, also interfere with blood clotting, so they should be used sparingly when taking Trintellix. Some anticancer drugs also raise the risk of bleeding episodes when taken with Trintellix. Finally, steroids can cause gastrointestinal bleeding. The risk of bleeding problems increases when these medications are taken with Trintellix.

Many people are unaware that some popular dietary and herbal supplements interfere with blood clotting, so these, too, should be used sparingly when taking Trintellix. They include:

How To Determine The Cause

A careful description of your tremor may help your doctor determine whether your antidepressant is causing your tremor of if it could be related to another condition. In order to determine whether your tremor is indeed related to your antidepressant, your doctor will:

  • Perform a physical exam
  • Ask you questions about your medical history
  • Ask what medications you are taking

Generally, this is enough to determine if your antidepressant is causing your tremor, though other tests may be needed to confirm that the tremor isn’t a result of another unrelated condition.

What Antidepressant Works Well With Trintellix

Your doctor can help determine whether another antidepressant may work well with Trintellix.

However, other antidepressants arent typically prescribed with Trintellix due to possible interactions. These include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors , serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors , and tricyclic antidepressants .

Instead of antidepressants, your doctor may prescribe other drugs along with Trintellix to treat your depression. For example, your doctor may recommend taking Trintellix with antipsychotic drugs that are approved to treat depression. These include lurasidone , brexpiprazole , and aripiprazole . These drugs are not known to interact with Trintellix.

To learn about which drugs you can safely take with Trintellix, be sure to talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

Session Time: 1:45pm-3:15pm

Location: Agora 3 West, Level 3

Objective: To assess efficacy and safety of Vortioxetine in Parkinsons Disease patients affected by depression and its effects on motor performance.

Background: Depression is one of the most common non-motor symptoms in PD patients, with a reported prevalence of 3040% overall. It is associated with rapid progression of motor and cognitive symptoms, as well as with worse quality of life. Vortioxetine is an antidepressant drug, acting as multimodal regulator of serotonin trasmission. Several types of antidepressants are currently available to treat PD-associated depression . Nevertheless, no previous studies were carried out to assess the effects of Vortioxetine in dPD.

Results: In this cohort, mean baseline scores were: MDS-UPDRS 19±5 HDRS 18±6. After three months of 10 mg daily Vortioxetine treatment, patients showed improvement of HDRS score , as well as patients treated with 20 mg dose . MDS-UPDRS scores were not significantly modified by the therapy in both groups. No severe side effects were reported.

Our findings suggest that Vortioxetine improves depression severity in dPD patients, without significant worsening of motor symptoms. Moreover, Vortioxetine was proved to have a remarkable safety profile.

What Is The Most Important Information I Should Know About Trintellix

You should not use vortioxetine if you are allergic to it.

Do not use vortioxetine if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, and others.

After you stop taking vortioxetine you must wait at least 21 days before you start taking an MAO inhibitor.

Tell your doctor if you also take stimulant medicine, opioid medicine, herbal products, or medicine for depression, mental illness, Parkinson’s disease, migraine headaches, serious infections, or prevention of nausea and vomiting. An interaction with vortioxetine could cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • bipolar disorder , or a history of drug abuse or suicidal thoughts

Risk Of Suicidal Thoughts And Behaviors

Trintellix has a boxed warning about risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children and young adults. This is a serious warning from the Food and Drug Administration . Boxed warnings alert patients and doctors about potentially dangerous drug effects.

Antidepressants, including Trintellix, can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children and young adults. Its important to note that Trintellix is not approved for use in children. Its only approved for use in adults ages 18 years and older.

This risk is higher when people first start taking Trintellix, and whenever their Trintellix dosage is adjusted.

What you can do

While taking Trintellix, people should try to be aware of any changes in their thoughts and behaviors. Caregivers and people they spend time with should also watch for any changes. This is especially important when they first start taking the medication, and whenever the dosage is adjusted.

Tell your doctor about any changes in your thinking or behaviors while taking Trintellix. And if you have thoughts about suicide, get help right away.

Evaluation Of Depression In Parkinsons Disease

Recognizing depressive symptoms in Parkinsons disease can be challenging because the psychomotor slowing and blunted affect commonly seen in depression can resemble the bradykinesia and masked facial expression of Parkinsons disease. Additionally, somatic features of depression such as decreased appetite, low energy, and sleep disturbances are commonly seen in patients with Parkinsons disease who do not have depression. Furthermore, depression must be differentiated from apathy, which commonly occurs in Parkinsons disease, is characterized by diminished motivation, and has significant overlap with depressive symptoms. A potentially useful discriminating feature is mood, which is negative in depression and neutral in apathy . It is important to remember that the differential diagnosis for depression is broad and includes other psychiatric disorders such as bipolar disorder, cognitive disorders, neoplastic processes affecting the central nervous system, metabolic and endocrine abnormalities, infections, hypoxemia, sleep disorders, medication side effects, and substance use, as well as hypoactive delirium caused by a variety of underlying illnesses.

Management Of Depression In Parkinsons Disease

Although traditionally considered a purely motor disorder, Parkinsons disease is increasingly recognized as a complex disease process with diverse neuropsychiatric complications in addition to its motor symptomatology. The range of neuropsychiatric complications associated with Parkinsons disease is broad and includes depression, anxiety, apathy, psychosis, cognitive impairment, impulse control disorders, and sleep disturbances. These neuropsychiatric complications become increasingly prevalent over the course of the disease and are often associated with poorer quality of life, increased disability, worse outcomes, and greater caregiver burden . As mental health providers commonly encounter depression in the Parkinsons disease population, it is important to be familiar with available, validated treatment options for this illness.

Parkinsons Disease And Depression

Parkinsons disease is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disorder clinically diagnosed by a combination of cardinal motor signs: bradykinesia, resting tremor, rigidity, and postural instability. The pathological hallmarks of Parkinsons disease include the loss of dopaminergic neurons within the substantia nigra and the presence of Lewy bodies, intracytoplasmic inclusions comprised mainly of alpha-synuclein . While the estimated prevalence for Parkinsons disease has varied widely, a recent meta-analysis reported the worldwide prevalence to be approximately 0.3% in the general population, suggesting that there are 7.5 million people living with the disorder worldwide . The incidence has been found to rapidly increase in populations over 60 years of age, with a mean age at diagnosis of 65 years . A male predominance has also been observed in many but not all epidemiologic studies, suggesting that men may have a higher risk for developing the disease than women .

Treatment For Tremors Caused By Antidepressants

Typically, the best solution for tremors caused by antidepressants is to stop taking the drug causing it and switch to a different medication. Tremors will generally resolve over time after the medication has been ceased, but occasionally a tremor caused by SSRIs may persist.

Sometimes, however, you may be doing so well on your medication that you don’t want to change it for fear of depression relapse. If this is the case, your doctor may opt to add an additional medication to control your tremors. Some medications that may be used to manage antidepressant-induced tremors include:
