Asked about the future of Parkinsons disease in the US, Dr Ray Dorsey says, Were on the tip of a very, very large iceberg.

Dorsey, a neurologist at the University of Rochester Medical Center and author of Ending Parkinsons Disease, believes a Parkinsons epidemic is on the horizon. Parkinsons is already the fastest-growing neurological disorder in the world in the US, the number of people with Parkinsons has increased 35% the last 10 years, says Dorsey, and We think over the next 25 years it will double again.

Most cases of Parkinsons disease are considered idiopathic they lack a clear cause. Yet researchers increasingly believe that one factor is environmental exposure to trichloroethylene , a chemical compound used in industrial degreasing, dry-cleaning and household products such as some shoe polishes and carpet cleaners.

To date, the clearest evidence around the risk of TCE to human health is derived from workers who are exposed to the chemical in the work-place. A 2008 peer-reviewed study in the Annals of Neurology, for example, found that TCE is a risk factor for parkinsonism. And a 2011 study echoed those results, finding a six-fold increase in the risk of developing Parkinsons in individuals exposed in the workplace to trichloroethylene .

Several Countries And States Have Regulated Or Banned Tce

TCE and Parkinson

In the European Union, TCE can only be used with special authorization. In May 2020, Minnesota was the first U.S. state to ban the use of TCE, with New York following shortly behind.

In 2020, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also concluded that TCE presents unreasonable risks to workers, occupational non-users, consumers, and bystanders.

With the carcinogenic effects and now potential risk for TCE-associated Parkinsons disease, environmental and health agencies are to be brought down on toxic chemicals like TCE, but further action has yet to be taken by the EPA or other United States authorities.

Common Chemical Linked To Parkinson’s

Exposure to a man-made chemical known as trichloroethylene, or TCE, is associated with a sixfold increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, according to a new study published Monday in the Annals of Neurology. TCE is a common organic contaminant that pollutes groundwater, soil, and air.

The study also found that exposure to another man-made chemical similar to TCE, known as perchloroethylene or tetrachloroethylene, or PERC, is associated with a tenfold increased risk of Parkinson’s. Both chemicals are found in metal degreasers, metal cleaners, paint, spot removers, and carpet-cleaning fluids.

“The fact that we were able to find a six-to-tenfold increased risk in exposure I think is very meaningful,” says Dr. Samuel M. Goldman, an associate professor of clinical research at The Parkinson’s Institute and the lead author of the study.

Chemicals and solvents like TCE have been anecdotally linked to Parkinson’s disease before but according to Goldman, no epidemiologic study has been done to verify the relationship until now.

Goldman and his team interviewed the twins using detailed job-specific questionnaires to gauge the likelihood of each person being exposed to the predetermined solvents.

“We designed these extremely detailed interviews so that we didn’t have to rely on the memory or the knowledge of the respondent,” explains Goldman.

“This may make the investigation of pesticides, toxins, and trauma very important to understanding what leads to this disease.”

    CDC case. CDC-198974-C8S2V2 Royces Parkinsons My husband, of 45 years of marriage, Royce Dean Hickson, is 75 years old and has Parkinsons. The remainder of his enlistment was spent cleaning Cosmoline off of Tank Turret parts with leather gloves before assembling them. He was not drafted, he enlisted and after his 3 years commitment, received an Honorable Discharge. The VA in Houston claims his Parkinsons is not military connected because he was not exposed for 8 years. None of his family ever had Parkinsons.

The most widely used models, are MPTP and 6-hydroxydopamine , which reproducibly yield nigral neuronal loss. Because rodents do not have pigments in nigral neurons, neuronal loss is typically assessed after tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity . As in human PD , 5060% loss of dopaminergic neurons is required to produce behavioral signs . In addition, dopaminergic degeneration can be assessed by measuring the concentration of DA and its metabolites, homovanillic acid and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid in the striatum. DA concentration in the striatal portion of the nigrostriatal system is a fairly reliable predictor of damage, although a deficit of typically 7080% is required before signs of toxicity are observed .

    The behavioral effects in mice exposed to MPTP can be assessed in a number of ways, motor function using the grid performance test or the more recent modification of this method, the vertical grid test . Other methods used include rearing behavior , open field test and rearing and foot fault behavior . To determine if the observed behavioral deficits are dopamine-dependent, then levodopa can be administered and the behavioral tests repeated. Depending on the dose of MPTP, signs of motor deficit may take many days or weeks or extend to months to be detected.

    Hello I had a Saturday job in dry cleaners for about a year in approx 1965 then went on to be a hairdresser for 4 years where we used carbon tetrachloride to clean all the wigs and hairpieces popular then.I have been diagnosed since 2013. Hope this is of interest.

    Yep, you probably did. In RAF we also called it , we had large trike baths for decreasing. Trike or to give its proper name Trichloroethylene is a TCE. It also came I other names during my 24 years but basically all were derived from the same basic chemicals.I am going to call Veterans Welfare or Royal British Legion later today, in between work, they can give us free advice and also help us file a case under forces compensation scheme or depending on your dates of service it may be under the war pension scheme.     The effects of TCE largely depend on two factors: the method and length of exposure. You can be exposed to TCE in one of the following ways:

    • Inhalation: The most common form of exposure, inhalation of TCE affects the central nervous system, and results in symptoms like dizziness, headaches, confusion, euphoria, facial numbness, and weakness.

    Trichloroethylene is classified as a carcinogen and cancer of the cervix, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, autoimmune diseases, cholangiocarcinomas, renal cell carcinoma, lung cancer, and cancer lymphatic system, male breast tissue cancer, fetal cardiac defects, and lead to mitochondrial dysfunction. The direct relationship to developing Parkinsons has been overlooked because exposure to TCE can happen decades before it manifests itself and cancer. While some exposed patients can show symptoms immediately, most others may unknowingly live or work in contaminated areas for most of their adult lives before developing any symptoms related to Parkinsons disease.
