Parkinsons disease is a condition in which certain cells inside the brain decay and stop working properly. The specific brain cells impacted by PD are those that are responsible for the control of muscle movements. The deterioration of these cells impair the ability of the brain to send movement and coordination commands to the muscles in the body. As a result, individuals with PD suffer from non-voluntary or uncontrolled body movements such as shaking, tremors, stiffness or rigidity, and lack of coordination.
PD is a progressive disorder that gradually gets worse and worse over time. The movement symptoms associated with PD get significantly more pronounced as the disease continues to progress. Eventually, in the end stages of PD the brains ability to control muscle movements becomes so impaired that individuals may be unable to walk and perform other vital functions.

Symptoms Of Parkinsons Disease
The specific symptoms of PD will vary in each person, but they primarily involve involuntary movements of the body. Some of the earliest symptoms on PD may be barely noticeable. Symptoms typically begin on one side of the body.
Common symptoms associated with PD include:
- Tremors / Shaking: uncontrollable tremors or rapid shaking usually occurs in the hands and limbs. The shaking is usually more pronounced when the limbs are at rest.
- Slow Movement: PD gradually slows down movement of the body, making it much more difficult to perform simple tasks such as walking or getting dressed.
- Muscle Stiffness: excessive rigidity or stiffness in the muscles may occur in certain parts of the body. This can be very painful and make movement difficult.
- Impair Reflex Movements: people with PD often loose the ability to perform automatic or reflect body movements such as eye blinking or smiling.
- Speech Impairment: PD usually has some impact on a persons speech.

Treatment Options For Parkinsons Disease
There is no effective treatment to cure or reverse the degenerative process inside the brain that causes PD. Treatment for PD is aimed at helping to alleviate the symptoms caused by the condition.
Medication is the primary treatment option for PD. Medication can be used to help manage the movement difficulties associated with PD. Unfortunately, the effectiveness of these medications diminishes over time.
‘they’re Not Doing Well’: New Austin Center Opens For Teens With Prolonged Mental Illness
At the far southwest end of Austin and behind secluded gates, lies a center for healing. This fall Paradigm Treatment opened its first Texas location on a 20-acre property here. It’s the first location outside of California.
The center is home to up to 16 teens ages 13-17, who need a residential treatment center for mental health. They stay between 30 to 90 day.
Residential treatment is for next level of care, often after someone has tried regular mental health therapy, been hospitalized or tried an intensive outpatient program or a partial hospitalization program.
Insurance often covers much of residential treatment stay. Without insurance it can cost hundreds of dollars a day.
Paradigm chose to expand to Austin, said Todd Dugas, the executive director of the Austin location, in part because of the familiarity with the city. CEO Dustin Wager lives here, but also “Austin has a great talent pool compared to other areas of the country,” Dugas said.
It’s not the only residential treatment program for teens in Central Texas, but the existing ones typically have a weeks- to months-long waiting list, making the need for another center a welcome addition for parents looking for care.

The Kids Who Find Paradigm
Paradigm often sees kids who have tried self harm or a suicide attempt. They have been to the hospital they’ve tried a partial hospitalization, Dugas said.
“They’re not doing well,” he said. “They don’t want to go home they don’t want to go back to the hospital.”
Many of the kids have more internalized behaviors, Dugas said. Often, they’ve been bullied they are introverts. “You ask them how they are doing. ‘Fine’ is the answer,” Dugas said.
Yet, they are self-harming, not doing well in school, not doing well with peers. The pandemic has made it even harder, Dugas said, as routines and human interaction got disrupted.
“The impact of COVID-19 has been devastating to families. It’s a cascading impact for children,” he said.

Paradigm does not treat people with substance abuse. Instead, the focus is on mental health.
The teens receive daily intensive individual therapy, group therapy and family therapy. It’s about 30 hours a week of therapy.
“They are eager to learn something more effective,” Dugas said. What they have been trying hasn’t been working, and “they don’t know what else to do.”

In a healthy brain, release of dopamine from neurons activates dopamine receptors that are responsible for mediating motor activity. The hallmark histopathologic features of PD are the loss of dopamineproducing neurons and the presence of Lewy bodies in the remaining neurons found in the substantia nigra. The loss of dopaminergic terminals in the striatum is crucial for onset of motor symptoms) such as tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia.
Non-motor symptoms such as anxiety, depression, gastrointestinal problems, loss of smell, insomnia, and pain often occur prior to a diagnosis of PD and continue throughout the course of disease. Paraquat Parkinsons Disease Lawsuits
Paraquat is an industrial-strength herbicide that is used in commercial agriculture. Over the last decade, a growing body of research has emerged which shows that chronic exposure to Paraquat can significantly increase the risk of Parkinsons disease.
This new evidence about the link between Paraquat exposure and PD has prompted a wave of Paraquat lawsuits. These Paraquat lawsuits are being filed by individuals who were exposed to Paraquat while working on a farm and were subsequently diagnosed with PD. The lawsuits allege that the manufacturer of Paraquat knew about the risk of PD and failed to warn.
Parkinsons Disease and Camp Lejeune
Camp Lejeune is a big military base in North Carolina. From 1963 to 1987 the water supply at Camp Lejeune was highly contaminated with a number of highly toxic chemicals. Subsequent health studies have shown that exposure to this toxic water increased the risk of certain diseases.
Parkinsons disease is one of the diseases that has been specifically linked to the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune. Both the ATSDR and VA have named Parkinsons disease as one of the health conditions that is presumptively connected to Camp Lejeunes water.
A new federal law passed this year is allowing victims of the Camp Lejeune water contamination the right to bring civil lawsuits for their injuries. Parkinsons disease is one of the most common injuries alleged by plaintiffs filing a Camp Lejeune lawsuit.
What Causes Parkinsons Disease
PD occurs when specific neurons in the brain decay and die, leading to abnormal brain functioning and impaired movements. The exact causes of PD are unknown, but there are at least 2 known factors that play a role in the development of PD.
Genetics: the first risk factor for PD is genetics. Research has identified certain gene variations that appear to be associated with an increased risk of PD. There are also certain genetic changes that are linked to PD.
Chemical Exposure: recent medical research has discovered that long-term exposure to certain toxic chemicals, including pesticides and herbicides, may cause PD.
There are a number of more general risk factors for PD that should be mentioned. These are age and gender. Old people are more likely to develop PD and the average age at diagnosis is over 60. Men are also more likely to get PD compared to women.

Does Positive Attitude Before Parkinsons Impact Life With Parkinsons
Last week I had the honor to be interviewed by Michael Kiniry, Producer of Gulf Coast Life, a local broadcast of WGCU Public Radio based in Ft. Myers, Florida. This is the second time I have joined Mike during Parkinsons Awareness month, and with 9,000 people or more with a PD diagnosis residing in SW Florida, Parkinsons is on a lot of peoples mind this month.
I was joined in the interview by Dr. Ramon Gil, a local neurologist, and Medical Director of the Parkinsons Treatment Center of Southwest Florida. Dr. Gil discussed current advancements in the treatment and diagnosis of Parkinsons and highlighted the importance of exercise and education as the two most important adjuncts to proper medical treatment.
I discussed the importance of enrolling in speech therapy soon after one receives a diagnosis of PD, emphasizing that early enrollment in therapy allows you to learn exercises which may help to strengthen and preserve communication and swallowing function. I also discussed the benefit of community-based programs, of which we are fortunate to have many here in SW Florida, and which serve an important role in providing care-partner and peer support and a host of programs supporting the body and mind.

School happens year-round and is coordinated with the patient’s home school. Often, these kids are behind in school because they haven’t been attending regularly before they came to Paradigm. They can use individual instruction time at Paradigm to catch up.
The teens stay in casitas that look like bedrooms with four beds in them and a separate bathroom. The kids are divided by gender. Often, part of the treatment is getting kids back to sleeping at night. There are no devices in the bedrooms to distract them. Computers are available for schoolwork only, and that’s done in the school/social/dining room.
Paradigm also has a garden for kids to watch something they plant grow. That garden gets used by the chef to create their meals, which are focused on nutrition to also help improve mental health. Paradigm also uses the grounds to do walk-and-talk therapy, or do group therapy outside.
“They can start to take a breath and ground themselves in this setting,” Dugas said.

We’re Marking Parkinson’s Awareness Month With Two People Who Work With People With The Disease And A Man Who Is Living With It
Parkinsons Disease is a disorder of the central nervous system that affects movement and speech. As it progresses, non-motor symptoms become increasingly common, and depression and anxiety can occur in about a third of people with PD. There are more than 9000 people in Southwest Florida currently living with Parkinsons Disease.
April is Parkinsons Awareness Month, so we talk with two people devoted to helping people with the neurodegenerative disease here in Southwest Florida.
