We’re The Home And Creators Of The Pwrmoves

New England Parkinson’s Livestream Recap! | Himiway Charity Ride Event

PWR!Moves are Parkinson’s-specific exercises that help maintain and restore skills that have deteriorated and can interfere with everyday movements.

The PWR!Moves curriculum offers a flexible and function-focused exercise approach that targets multiple PD symptoms and is adaptable for all levels of disease severity.

PWR! has trained thousands of physical, occupational, and exercise therapists in the PWR!Moves curriculum across the US and world.

Where Can I Find Support If I Have Parkinson’s Disease And Want To Exercise

You can find exercise support in your community. For example, many gyms and community centers offer seated exercise classes for people who struggle with balance. Ask your healthcare provider for ideas if you have Parkinsons disease and want to exercise.

A note from Cleveland Clinic

Exercise is an important part of managing Parkinsons disease. Talk to your healthcare provider about your exercise program and choose activities you enjoy so you stay motivated to get up and move every day.

Our Founders: Edna And Bob Woods

The New England Parkinsons Ride obtained our 501 status as a charitable organization in March of 2013 and, with the exception of the Executive Director and two part-time staff members, is run exclusively by volunteers. We are extremely grateful to our SPONSORS, as we rely solely on those dollars and registration fees for all operational expenses of The New England Parkinsons Ride.

100% of the money raised by our cyclists goes directly to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research!

Importance Of Expert Care

People living with Parkinson’s who seek expert care have better outcomes. Their complication risks are lower, and they enjoy better quality and longer lives. In fact, neurologist care saves about 4,600 lives each year in the U.S. alone. Better access to this care could help tens of thousands of people with Parkinson’s.

Whether you’re newly diagnosed or have been living with Parkinson’s for a while, getting the right care at the right time can make a difference for you and your family.

Watch A Personal Thank You From Michael When We Hit The $1 Million Dollar Mark:

Although our primary goal is to raise funds and awareness for Parkinsons Disease, we like to think of our event as a weekend at the beach, with a ride thrown in for fun. Riders of all ages and abilities are welcome so it can become a wonderful family tradition or a weekend away with your cycling buddies. We now have entertainment, concessions, vendors, even showers at The Ballpark, so its a great way to spend a day, even if youre just a spectator. Though all rides are completed in one day, there are many hotels in the area where friends and family can stay and play. Many of them offer discounted rates to those participating in the Ride .

In addition, we offer a Pre-Ride Dinner on Friday night, where cyclists can socialize and check-in ahead of time for the mornings ride. This is a special night and tickets sell out fast. Information on reservations for the Pre-Ride dinner is sent out to all registeredriders and volunteers as we get closer to the Ride!

If I Exercise Will I Still Need My Parkinsons Medications

Some people find that exercise helps them reduce the doses of Parkinsons medications over time. But exercise is not a replacement for your medications. In fact, some people need more medications so they can stay active. Dont make changes to your medications without talking to your healthcare providers.

Should I Talk To My Healthcare Provider Before I Start Exercising If I Have Parksinson’s Disease

Talk to your neurologist and your primary care provider before starting a new exercise regimen. They can:

  • Counsel you on how intense your exercises can be.
  • Recommend exercises appropriate for your individual health.
  • Refer you to a physical therapist to create a personal exercise program.
  • Warn about exercises to avoid based on your particular challenges or limitations.

All Cyclists Please Note:

  • If you are bringing back or creating a team, please make sure that the Team Captain is the FIRST to register! Once that has happened, the rest of the team will simply select join a team during the registration process. When searching for a team name, please use only a few letters to avoid misspellings, and then select your team from the drop down box. If your team does not appear, the Team Captain has not yet registered. You may still complete your registration and then join the team from your Fundraising Dashboard, once the Team Captain sets it up.
  • If you rode in the past, your Team Fox password is still active, as long as you use the same email address. Just plug it in when asked for a password at the beginning of the registration form. If you have forgotten it, there will be a forgot password link and a password reset will be immediately emailed to you. New cyclists will simply create a password. Please remember your password as that will also be your login to your Fundraising Dashboard.
  • Please remember that each cyclist MUST fundraise individually, as this is the only way to track minimum fundraising and VIP status. There will no longer be the option to Donate to a Team. Rest assured, however, that your Individual fundraising will show as part of the Team Total!

Are There Any Risks Of Exercising With Parkinsons Disease

Some symptoms, like Parkinsons tremors, may seem worse during exercise. But exercise generally improves tremors and other symptoms in the long run.

Reduce challenges by stretching before and after exercise. Use good form to prevent injury. And avoid slippery floors, poor lighting and tripping hazards. If you have pain, stop and rest.

Pushing yourself too hard during exercise can lead to injury. Start slowly and increase intensity and duration over time. Keep a log to track your exercise choices and how you feel. Eventually, youll learn what works best for you.
