New Insights Into The Disease’s Progression
These modeling decisions have allowed us to gain more insights into disease states and progression pathways. The results suggest that a patients state can vary in several factors, including the ability to perform activities of daily living issues around slowness of movement, tremor and postural instability and non-motor symptoms such as depression, anxiety, cognitive impairment and sleep disorders.
We have found that the results support the hypothesis of diverse progression pathways, as indicated by the many disease trajectories weve observed. However, the AI model is still able to make accurate predictions. Having learned the model using one dataset, it was able to successfully predict an advanced state of Parkinsons disease associated with outcomes such as dementia and the inability to walk unassisted.
Because of the diversity of experiences in Parkinsons disease, we hope that by enabling such predictions, the model can help in patient management and provide more specific inclusion criteria and outcome definitions during clinical trial design.
There is still a lot of work to do, though. For example, we hope to refine the model to provide even more granular characterization of disease states by incorporating emerging biomarker assessments including genomic and neuroimaging measurements.
We are humbled to be a part of Michael J. Foxs vision for Parkinsons research and hope that together we will make a meaningful impact on the lives of patients around the world.

Michael J. Fox is a passionate advocate for people with Parkinsons disease, but he revealed the only reason he initially went public with his illness is because of the intensity of the bullying he was facing from the paparazzi.
The actor spoke with Entertainment Tonight about the great opportunity his illness presented in terms of educating the public and raising money to find a cure, and how that disclosure almost didnt happen. It was seven or eight years after I had been diagnosed … the paparazzi and stuff, they would stand outside my apartment and heckle at me, like, Whats the matter with you? Fox recounted. I said, I cant be making my neighbors deal with this, so I came out, and it was great. It was a great thing. Fox was first diagnosed with the longterm degenerative nervous system disorder in 1991, but didnt come forward publicly with his illness until 1998. He continued, It was a great surprise to me that people responded the way they responded. They responded with interest, in the desire to find an answer to the disease, and then I saw that as a great opportunity. I didnt get put in this position to squander it.

Fox Says Parkinson’s Has Taken This Sense From Him
Since going public with his condition in 1998, seven years after his diagnosis, Fox has been open about his Parkinson’s symptoms, which include tremor, speech difficulty, and muscle rigidity. While speaking with Birbiglia, he added another surprising symptom to that list: complete loss of his sense of smell.
Though he no longer has this particular sense, he still enjoys remembering the smells of his childhood, he says. “I remember the smell of pine, just after Christmas, in this apartment building I lived in. It had balconies, fire escapes, and everyone would put the trees out there for New Year’s before they got picked up, because you couldn’t put them on the road. And the whole place smelled like pine. During a conversation on Mike Birbiglia’s podcast Working It Out, the 60-year-old said he’s reached the point where his once superb memorizing skills are now failing him, which is affecting the roles he’s taking on. The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinsons Research has awarded a research grant to health care technology company Koneksa to evaluate Parkinsons disease progression using digital measures.
According to a Koneksa release, the goal of the project is to predict stages of PD using distinct digital measures as classifiers and longitudinally model disease progression.
There are no current diagnostics to detect progression in early PD or in the prodromal stage, and identifying any predictive digital biomarkers would be a meaningful addition for patients and physicians,Chris Benko, CEO and founder of Koneksa, said in the release.
The study will evaluate a retrospective Parkinsons Progression Markers Initiative dataset from the Verily watch, comprised of digital measures using Koneksa algorithms along with the application of specialized machine learning techniques, the release stated. The observational PPMI study is sponsored by the foundation.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation continues to fund research efforts aimed at improving the lives of people with Parkinsons,Samantha Hutten, PhD, the foundations director of translational research, said in the release. We are proud to support the work of researchers at Koneksa investigating digital biomarkers to evaluate disease progression, as this is a critical unmet need.

Michael J. Fox has been incredibly open about his struggles with Parkinsons disease in recent years. Unfortunately, worsening symptoms led Fox to retire from acting after more than four decades in film and television, as dealing with the illness started affecting his abilities as an actor. A year after his retirement, the Teen Wolf actor opened up about the acting difficulties hes facing these days after his long fight with the illness.
The Spin City actor managed to keep his career thriving even as he switched from films back to television with starring and supporting roles. But working long hours and memorizing multiple pages of dialogue doesnt work for him or his condition anymore. While the film and TV actor may have slowed down his career, it seemed he is willing to return to the craft under one condition. In his words:
