Much effort has been undertaken in the way of understanding the neuroprotective effects of polyphenols, using both in vitro and in vivo models . Broadly speaking, the molecular mechanisms of their neuroprotective actions can be classified as: anti-inflammatory activities and antioxidant capacity, including free radical scavenging and metal chelation modulation of cell signaling pathways and anti-amyloid action through direct binding with specific amyloidogenic proteins such as A, S, and tau. Such a wide mode of action highlights a key aspect that has repeatedly emerged from studies on natural polyphenols, including wine polyphenols namely that they exhibit a remarkable ability to simultaneously and synergistically modulate multiple molecular targets, suggesting a greater potential for therapeutic efficacy in the complex pathogenesis of AD and PD . Thus, in this section, we summarize in vitro and in vivo neuroprotective effects of RWP in relation to the shared pathological features involved in AD and PD. Experimental findings on neuroprotective mechanisms will later be discussed in light of recent bioavailability and clinical studies aimed at therapeutic use of red wine polyphenols.

THURSDAY, Jan. 27, 2022 — Red wine may be a guilty pleasure, but new research shows it might also be a powerful weapon against the ravages of Parkinson’s disease.

Why? The antioxidants in red wine, and fruit such as berries for that matter, might slow progression of the movement disorder, a new study suggests.

According to researchers, people with Parkinson’s who eat three or more servings per week of foods high in antioxidants called flavonoids may reduce their odds of dying early compared with people who do not eat as many flavonoid-rich foods.

“Flavonoids are naturally occurring, plant-based dietary components, rich in fruit and vegetables. They give various colors in these plants,” said senior researcher Dr. Xiang Gao. He is director of the nutritional epidemiology lab at Pennsylvania State University, in University Park.

“Adapting a healthy dietary pattern, high in colorful fruits and veggies, even after Parkinson diagnosis, could slow disease progression and improve survival rate,” he added.

Still, the study can’t prove that flavonoids prolonged the lives of Parkinson’s patients, only that there may be an association, Gao said.

“In our previous study, published in Neurology in 2012, we found that flavonoids could prevent against Parkinson risk in the future among those who did not have Parkinson at the beginning of follow-up,” Gao said. “The current study provides further evidence regarding neuro-protective effects of fruit and vegetables.”

Mysoline For Essential Tremor

Primidone is an anti-seizure drug that is also effective for treating essential tremor. It is most useful for people with hand tremor. Although it is not clear how it works, primidone appears to be as effective as propranolol, with significant suppression of tremor in most patients. However, as with Inderal, a percentage of people may develop tolerance to the treatment after about a year.

In most cases, primidone is given to people who do not tolerate propranolol. Primidone also can be given in addition to propranolol, to improve symptoms.

What Causes Parkinsons Disease

The exact cause of Parkinsons remains unknown although several factors have been identified that are believed to be linked to the disease:

We included all men and women in Sweden who were hospitalized with either a diagnosis of an alcohol use disorder or appendicitis between January 1, 1972 and December 31, 2008, identified through the Swedish National Inpatient Register. This register is kept by the National Board of Health and Welfare and covers the entire Swedish population.

The study was approved by the Stockholm Regional Ethical Review Board, Sweden.

Each individual was considered to be exposed from the time of his or her first admission with a diagnosis of an alcohol use disorder recorded in the Swedish National Inpatient Register during the study period. Survival time was calculated as the interval between this date and the date of first admission with PD, administrative censoring on 31 December 2008, or as recorded in the National Cause of Death Register, whichever came first. Current Drinking Guidelines May Not Be Strong Enough

The number of dementia cases worldwide is expected to triple to more than 150 million by 2050. With no cure in sight there is an increasing focus on changing certain lifestyles habits including drinking habits.

Dr. Topiwala points out there are drugs that reduce iron in the brain, known as chelators. They are already being investigated as potential Alzheimers and Parkinsons treatments.

Alcohol-related brain iron may be partially mediated by higher systemic iron levels, but it is likely there are additional mechanisms involved. Poorer executive function and fluid intelligence and slower reaction speeds were seen with markers of higher basal ganglia iron, study authors write. Brain iron accumulation is a possible mechanism for alcohol-related cognitive decline.

Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adult men of legal age consume no more than two drinks in a day. They recommend adult women limit themselves to one drink a day.

Berries Red Wine Linked To Longer Survival In Patients With Parkinson Disease

People with Parkinson disease who regularly consumed flavonoids like berries, red wine, tea, and apples had lower rates of death than people who didnt, according to a new study.

Researchers examining the dietary habits of participants in 2 long-running health studies found that patients with Parkinson disease who included 3 or more servings per week of foods high in flavonoids had lower all-cause mortality rates.

Through the findings of other studies, flavonoids already have a reputation for being neuroprotective, but the authors said not much is known about their effect in people already diagnosed with PD. To that end, they examined the intake of these compounds before and after diagnosis.

Data for the studies came from 2 sources: the Nurses Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study . The NHS began in 1976 with 121,700 female registered nurses aged 30 to 55 years, and the HPFS began 10 years later with 51,529 male health professionals aged 40 to 75 years.

The researchers, from multiple universities, included 599 women from the NHS and 652 men from the HPFS who were diagnosed with PD during follow-up and had dietary data available. The average age for both groups at the time of PD diagnosis was about 72.

The diagnosis of PD was self-reported at first, and then confirmed by a neurologist who reviewed medical records. The average length of follow-up was 33 years.
