Central Coast Voices: Understanding Parkinsons

RAISING MONEY FOR PARKINSON

Parkinsons disease is a neurodegenerative brain disorder. Nearly one million people will be living with Parkinson’s disease in the U.S. by 2020, which is reported to be more than the number of people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig’s disease combined. It is estimated that 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with PD each year. Currently, more than 10 million people worldwide are living with PD. The disease affects each patient differently and the symptoms can change from day to day. There is currently no cure for the disease, but there are many treatment options for patients.

Join Kris Kington Barker as she speaks with Barrie Cleveland and Pricilla Mikesell, board members with the Central Coast Parkinsons Association, as well as individuals living with the disease and Maria Allen, a physical therapist specializing in PD on the Central Coast as they discuss what Parkinsons is, and talk about the latest information on research and therapies

Broadcast date: 8/29/2019

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX and made possible through underwriting by Joan Gellert-Sargen.

The Parkinson’s Association Of South Africa

charity profile

The Parkinson’s Association of South Africa was first established in 1970. For the first 30 years it survived as a very small, privately funded unit, with most of its operations carried out by volunteers.

In 2000 Ms Karin Willemse took over as the Director of PASA and updated the organisation’s operational system. Under her direction, the organisation achieved national status and began to successfully lobby for funding from the National Lottery.

PASA operates from modest premises in Randburg, Johannesburg, consisting of a reception area, a small office and two meeting rooms.

It employs one full-time member of staff, namely Ms Willemse, Director of the organisation. An administration executive, Ms Virgina Lahong, is employed half-days. Two additional part-time personnel complete the staff complement, namely Ms Gisela Stander who assists with training and provides bookkeeping services, and Ms Lee-ann Duarte who provides IT and communications services. The organisation has appointed a registered auditor and its financial records are available for inspection.

With its skeleton staff, PASA achieves 7,000 to 8,000 interactions every year, involving telephone consultations, e-mails, face-to-face consultations and public talks.

Finding Relief For Migraines And Parkinsons

Here at our Erina, NSW office, we concentrate on the health of the upper cervical spine. The brainstem is located in the same area as the C1 and C2 vertebrae. They have the job of protecting it. However, these bones are especially susceptible to misalignment due to their mobility and location. If a misalignment occurs, the brainstem can be put under undue stress. This causes it not to send proper signals to the brain and body. A link has been established between this kind of misalignment and migraines.

We use specialized x-rays and measurements to help locate the exact spot where the misalignment lies. We then employ a gentle adjustment technique to encourage the bones of the neck to move back into place naturally rather than popping or cracking them. This leads to a longer-lasting adjustment. Many patients see positive results in as little as one or two visits.

Health Hq Connects Migraines And Parkinsons To Neck Misalignment

Migraines are more than a bad headache. They are quite debilitating and can leave one without energy for days. Interestingly, a study in Taiwan revealed a connection between migraines and the likelihood of developing Parkinsons disease. While the study did not come to any definite conclusions, it did bring to light the fact that these conditions have a possible link and similar root cause.

It may be hard to see the connection when looking at the surface of these two conditions. However, both of them are linked to problems within the central nervous system and the brain. A connection between them is not crystal clear, but a malfunction in the nervous system can be the cause of a number of health problems Parkinsons and migraines included. Another link is seen in the production and distribution of dopamine and serotonin. These are both compromised in migraine and Parkinsons patients.

Loud Crowd Helps Adults Cope With Parkinson’s And Regain Confidence

Each Wednesday afternoon, you’ll find a group of adults gathered around a table at Central Coast Language & Learning Center. They often start by taking turns naming items that fall into categories like “words that start with ‘s'” or “types of cheese” and “classical musicians.”

These seemingly innocuous exercises are actually intentionally crafted to maintain and strengthen their cognitive and verbal skills. Each person around the table suffers from Parkinson’s disease, a progressive nervous system disorder with a host of side effects including impaired speech.

The group’s leader, Director at CCLLC Jennifer D’Attilio, guides the group through exercises with the constant reminder, “Stay loud!” Speaking loudly and clearly is the goal for these LOUD Crowd group members, which will help them better interact with their family members and friends, and also feel more confident when they go out in public.

“Everyday experiences like talking to sales clerks can be embarrassing and difficult with Parkinson’s,” says LOUD Crowd group member MaryLou. “Sometimes things just don’t come to me I forget. But Jenn has encouraged me to keep trying, and speaking loudly and clearly has started to become more natural.”

As Pat puts it, “Parkinson’s can stop you from living the way you want to live. But you just have to take it day by day and get out there and interact with people.”

Know someone who may benefit from joining a LOUD Crowd group? Call us at 831-645-7900 for more information.

If You Have Parkinsons The Sooner You Begin A Tailored Exercise Program The Better

Boxing classes help people fight Parkinson

Treating patients with Parkinsons Disease is a highly specialised area of Exercise Physiology and one that very few practitioners are proficient in. It demands a detailed understanding of the pathology and primary impairments of the condition in order to treat and manage you most effectively.

Our accredited Exercise Physiologist, Nicole Armstrong has a special interest and many yeas experience working with patients with a range of neurological conditions, including Parkinsons Disease.

Appreciating that no two people with Parkinsons will experience their condition in the same way, Nicole begins with a detailed one-on-one assessment to test a number of functions including, your movement, cognition, balance, core stability, and flexibility.

Nicole will also take the time to get to know as much about you as possible, from your medical history and the type of lifestyle you lead, to your goals. She will then tailor an exercise and therapy program with a strong focus on self-management, specifically for you.

The key to remember is that the earlier you get started on a tailored program, the more effective it will be to help slow the progression of your Parkinsons symptoms.

Parkinson Voice Project has named Adult Speech Pathology in Erina as a recipient of its 2021 Speak Out and Loud Crowd Grant Program.

The grant takes the form of resources and training for the team at Adult Speech Pathology.

Speech Pathologist and practice owner, Vanessa Sciacca, said she was delighted to be given the grant two years in a row.

I am passionate about getting information out to everyone with Parkinsons disease that there is effective treatment to help with speech, voice and swallowing difficulties that often occur.

Through the grant system, other team members have also been trained to deliver this program to cover the whole Central Coast area or via telehealth.

Adult Speech Pathology Central Coast is committed to offering Parkinson Voice Projects effective speech therapy program across the region.

The most benefit can be gained when people access the program early in their diagnosis to prevent further decline.
