Can Acupuncture Help With Parkinson’s

What Should People Do If They Want To Explore Acupuncture For Parkinsons Diseaseanxiety Treatment Should They Talk To A Doctor Or See Anacupuncture Practitioner

What kind of effect can acupuncture have on Parkinson’s Disease?

While it is always useful to keep ones doctor informed of whatever additional treatments one may seek, acupuncture for anxiety will be performed by an acupuncture practitioner. I recommend looking up local acupuncture practitioners, reading through their websites, and then contacting them before choosing which one to visit.

How Might Aromatherapy Help

Many people use aromatherapy to help them relax. There hasnt been much research on how aromatherapy may help with Parkinsons. Research suggests it can have a mild, temporary calming effect on anxiety, but another study said the evidence available wasnt good enough to prove aromatherapy could effectively treat any condition.

Aromatherapy is one of the more commonly offered therapies in NHS hospitals with complementary medicine programmes. Speak to your GP, specialist or Parkinsons nurse about availability in your area.

Massage Therapy For Parkinsons

While data analyzing the role of acupuncture in treatment of PD symptoms is fairly limited, the data on the role of massage in the treatment of PD symptoms is even more so. One clinical trial was done assessing the effects of a 40-minute massage session, with some participants then continuing to receive seven weekly sessions. The control group was not blinded to their status . Despite these limitations, the study showed that massage was helpful in improving quality of life for people with PD.

All of the above begs the question should a person with PD try acupuncture or massage to help their PD symptoms? The bottom line is that there is little formal evidence that either treatment is truly effective. Larger and better designed clinical trials are necessary before these treatments will be routinely recommended.

For now, people with PD can choose to make their own assessments about whether these practices improve their well-being and whether to incorporate acupuncture or massage into their weekly routine. In general there is minimal risk in trying acupuncture or massage, aside from perhaps disappointment if they do not work for you. If you plan to try acupuncture and/or massage, be sure to go to reputable practitioners, preferably ones with experience in treating people with PD.

Acupuncture Eases Anxiety In Parkinson’s Patients

Scalp Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an effective treatment for anxiety in patients with Parkinsons disease , results of a randomized controlled trial show.

Both sham and real acupuncture eased PD-related anxiety at the end of 8-week treatment, but only real acupuncture had an enduring effect at 2 months after treatment ended.

The early effect with sham acupuncture in this Chinese population is not surprising, the researchers point out.

In China, acupuncture is a traditional treatment method with a long history, which has a high degree of cultural identity among Chinese patients, Li-xing Zhuang, PhD, with Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Guangdong, China, explained in an email to Medscape Medical News.

Therefore, the patient will typically trust acupuncture as an effective treatment, which leads to the therapeutic effect of the sham needle at the end of the treatment.

However, while acupuncture may produce a placebo effect in a short time, this effect will disappear with time, while the therapeutic effect remains at a stable level, Zhuang said.

Based on our results, acupuncture should be recommended for anxiety in PD, Zhuang added.

The study was published online Sept. 21 in JAMA Network Open.

How Might Conductive Education Help

Some people find that conductive education helps to control the physical symptoms of Parkinsons, including tremor, rigidity and slowness of movement. By learning strategies which help overcome movement and other everyday problems, conductive education can increase feelings of confidence and independence.

Although conductive education is well established as a treatment for Parkinsons, there is little supporting medical evidence for its effectiveness.

Are Acupressure Points For Parkinsons Disease Effective

Parkinsons Disease is complex and despite extensive studies, there are still many unknowns. However, acupuncture is also a well-studied field and its qualities have been proven on a number of occasions. In studies that combine the two topics of interest, it has been found that the activation of certain acupuncture points can improve mobility, comfort, and reduce fatigue in individuals with Parkinsons disease. Although acupuncture is considered to be an extremely effective option in combination with medications and exercise, activating acupressure points for Parkinsons Disease has been proven to be significantly effective in treating this condition as well.

Best Acupuncture Points for Parkinson’s Disease

Tremor and involuntary shaking treatment using acupuncture may reduce tremors after the first treatment. Acupuncturists know the points to work on to slow down hand tremor with Acupuncture. Some experts believe that because acupuncture uses fine, sterile needles to stimulate nerves and the release of hormones, its possible that this is what provides the therapeutic effects seen in patients with tremors, allowing patients to reduce or eliminate the need for harsher therapies.

Research suggests that the stimulation of nerves can interrupt the mechanism of the tremors due to the fact that when manipulated, the acupuncture needles activate the somatic sensory receptors that are sensitive to physical distortion, along with a multitude of changes observed in the thalamus, 10 which is thought to play a role in tremors.

Acupuncture and herbs have been employed for thousands of years by Asian traditional doctors for nervous disorders. The benefits for the use of the acupoints LR3, GB34 and GV20 for nerve and motor conditions have been well-documented in Asian medical literature.

In a 2017 study, researchers from the College of Medicine at South Koreas Kyung Hee University investigated the research evidence for acupuncture for treating Parkinsons disease. After a deep search, the researchers found 25 randomized clinical trials that tested acupuncture treatment for Parkinsons.

In this meta-analysis, the researchers scored for high-quality. And 19 of the 25 studies were found to be of high quality. This means they had enough strength to significantly remove bias and the placebo effect.

The clinical trials included 1,616 Parkinsons disease patients. They were conducted between 2000 and 2014. Some of the studies compared acupuncture to no or sham treatment. Other studies compared acupuncture with conventional treatment to conventional treatment without acupuncture.

The meta-analysis of these studies found that acupuncture can significantly improve symptoms of Parkinsons in all these cases: Whether being treated with drugs or not.

Some of the studies utilized Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scales to gauge any improvements. The rating scales are:

Diet And Physical Activity

Exercise and diet play important roles in a persons overall health. A healthy diet can give people the nutrients their body needs to function well and help with weight management. Exercise and physical activity can help to lower symptoms associated with anxiety and improve mood overall.

Before making any drastic changes to diet or exercise, a person should discuss their health with a healthcare professional.

Data Sources And Search Strategy

For English publications, data were gathered from four separate electronic databases, including Medline , Embase , the Cochrane Library , and PubMed. For Chinese articles, online databases such as the China National Knowledge Infrastructure , China Biology Medicine disc, Chinese Scientific Journals Full-Text Database , and Wanfang Database were searched. Searches were confined to publications in the English and Chinese languages. No restrictions were imposed on publication years. The reference lists of the included studies were also manually searched to identify relevant articles. The obtained studies were further evaluated by review of titles and abstracts to exclude those not meeting the criteria, and the full text was then read to determine eligibility. Detailed search strategies are described in Appendix 1.

Efficacy Of Acupuncture For Global Evaluation

For global evaluation, we used the total UPDRS score and the Webster Scale. UPDRS is the most widely used scale for evaluation of the PD symptoms. The classic UPDRS has six parts: UPDRS I- mentation, behavior and mood Part IIactivities of daily life Part IIImotor evaluation Part IVcomplications of therapy Part Vstaging of severity of PD and Part VISchwab and England ADL scale. This is a clinician-report scale. Most items have scores ranged from 0 to 4 . The Webster Scale is another commonly used self-report scale, which is briefer than UPDRS. It has 10 items . The scores range from 0 to 3 . We found that all the measurements using the total UPDRS score showed good efficacy of acupuncture, regardless of whether the protocol acupuncture + classical treatment vs. classical treatment or acupuncture vs. classical treatment was used. A meta-analysis by Lee and Lim analyzed seven RCTs with 425 participants and found that the protocol acupuncture + classical treatment showed superior efficacy to classical treatment . These results are similar to those of Liu et al. from 11 RCTs with 831 participants = 1.15 95% CI, 1.63 to 0.67 P< 0.001] , of Noh from five RCTs with 407 participants , and of Lee from two RCTs with 60 participants .

How Might Herbal Medicine Help

Herbs are used for a wide variety of conditions. There is some evidence that certain herbs, like St Johns Wort, may help with depression and some skin conditions. But be aware that the herbal remedy St Johns Wort, which can be used for depression, is not recommended for people with Parkinsons. This is because St Johns Wort can interact with your Parkinsons drugs.

St Johns Wort is also often mixed with other components to create different brands of the herbal remedy. This could increase the possibility of side effects and interactions.

Small trials have been carried out with plants commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to relieve Parkinsons symptoms . More research is needed to establish conclusively whether herbs are helpful in the treatment of Parkinsons symptoms.

Acupuncture Slows Parkinsons Disease

17 December 2012

New research reveals how acupuncture protects the brain in areas damaged by Parkinsons disease. Scientists at the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine have discovered two acupuncture points that prevent the breakdown of an important brain protecting enzyme, tyrosine hydroxylase. This enzyme helps the body to create L-DOPA, an important dopamine precursor and drug used in the treatment of Parkinsons disease. It is now known that acupuncture prevents decreases of the L-DOPA creating enzyme in the thalamic portions of the brain thereby improving the motor function that is destroyed by Parkinsons disease.

Loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra portion of the brain is a key pathology in Parkinsons disease and tardive dyskinesia. The World Health Organization scientists have discovered that acupuncture inhibits decreases of tyrosine hydroxylase in nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons thereby protecting dopamine neuron levels in the substantia nigra portion of the brain. Depletion of these neurons leads to Parkinsons disease and acupuncture stimulation of acupoints GB34 and LV3 prevents depletion by sustaining tyrosine hydroxylase levels.
