Brain Donation For Parkinson’s Research

Is It Possible To Donate Other Organs For Research Along With My Brain

Brain Donation

Brain banks can only receive donations of brain tissue. If you are interested in donating other organs, please contact NHS organ donation.

Please be aware that if you have a history of memory problems or a diagnosis of dementia it is unlikely that you will be able to donate any other organs for transplant or research.

The Human Tissue Authority can provide information about full body donation. It is not usually possible to donate both your brain and the rest of your body separately.

Brain Donation Is A Gift Of Knowledge

The Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center , established at McLean Hospital in 1978 and known as the Brain Bank, is a centralized resource for the collection and distribution of human brain specimens for brain research. The Brain Bank collects brain and tissue samples from across the United States and distributes them to investigators all over the world.

A brain donation is a gift of knowledge to all of us, and it is of critical importance for our understanding of brain disorders.

Studies on the human brain are essential to discovering the biological causes of brain disorders. They provide unique access to the brain at the molecular and cellular level, thus allowing researchers to increase our knowledge of changes that happen in the brains of people struggling with these disorders. Such knowledge is critical to prevention and development of new therapeutic treatments.

Scientists from top academic and medical centers request tissue from the Brain Bank for their research. Since the majority of these studies can be carried out on a very small amount of tissue, each donated brain provides a large number of samples for many researchers. However, in order to conduct valid experiments, it is necessary to supply researchers with a variety of brain specimens.

We are grateful for philanthropy support from the Manton Foundation and other individuals and foundations. This support helps the Brain Bank to foster your gift of knowledge.

What causes essential tremor is currently a question with no known answer. Brain donations are the only way to find the answers to this question. With these answers, better treatments can be developed and a cure can be found.

Medical researchers at UT Southwestern, with the help of the IETF, maintain a centralized brain bank to serve the ET community. This will enable doctors to begin to actively study what happens in the brains of people with ET. Unfortunately, there is a severe shortage of brain tissue donations from people who had ET during life.

Eligible donors will have been diagnosed with essential tremor by a physician, they would not have any other neurological diagnoses , would be ages 70 and older, and had not had Deep Brain Stimulation surgery or any other surgical intervention to treat their tremor.

If you are interested in helping find the causes of ET and want to leave a medical legacy for future generations, please contact us:

Why Should I Donate My Brain To Parkinson’s Research

BRAIN DONATION IMAGE_1

Due to our aging global population, each year more people are being diagnosed with neurological disorders. Breakthroughs in brain disease depend on studies using donated post-mortem human brain tissue. Since one brain can provide tissue for dozens sometimes hundreds of neurological studies, an individual brain donation is a highly valuable gift that almost anyone can make.

Process Of Brain Donation

While each brain donation arranged by Brain Support Network is individually organized, families and our organization follow specific critical steps to ensure brain donations are completed successfully.

Download our Process for Brain Donation sheet for a simple outline of the important steps listed in chronological order.

BSN is generally able to determine the prices charged by service providers before the family decides to proceed or not. Even the name of the eventual donor isnt required until after this step.

Why Is There No Cure For Pd

In my mind, there are several potential reasons there is no cure for Parkinsons disease . The brain is an extremely complex organ and there is no known definitive cause for the disease. Each PD diagnosis is unique, patients suffer different symptoms and different rates of disease progression, and certain remedies work for some but not for others. Is there any wonder why there is not yet a cure for PD and why nothing currently exists to slow its progression?

Becoming A Brain Donor

Have you considered leaving your brain to Parkinson’s research? We speak to 1 family who are proud to be part of the search for a cure.

The Parkinson’s UK Brain Bank, based at Imperial College London, is the only brain research facility in the world that’s solely dedicated to Parkinson’s research. Around 120 brains arrive there each year, from people with and without the condition. These are critical to unlocking the mysteries of Parkinson’s, as well as new treatments and, hopefully one day, a cure.

Our work at the Brain Bank simply wouldn’t be possible without donors. But becoming a donor isn’t always an easy decision. Sisters Eve and Clair supported their mum, who had Parkinson’s, when she decided to donate her brain to Parkinson’s research.

Clair explains: “Our mum, Jenny, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s when she was 46 years old, after experiencing symptoms and having tests for some time. She passed away in December 2014, aged 67.”

“Mum’s approach to Parkinson’s was to just get on as usual” says Eve. “She wasn’t interested in new therapies and experimental techniques she always said she didn’t want to be a guinea pig. But when the option to become a brain donor came up, it was the easiest decision for Mum. She didn’t need to think about how she might feel. In her mind, once she had passed away, she wouldn’t feel anything anyway.”

Why Is It Important To Donate Brain Tissue

$7K donation to Parkinson’s research

Around 12 million people in the UK are living with a neurological condition and, as the average age of the population increases, the number of people developing dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases will increase rapidly. Research is needed to find new and better treatments for a wide range of conditions.

In many cases, this research will involve the study of human tissue from someone who has died . Indeed, in many conditions examination of post-mortem brain tissue is the only way to make a definitive diagnosis to confirm or alter the diagnosis that the doctors have made during the donors life.

Researchers are making great advances in neuroscience and other diseases where the brain may play a part but there is still much we dont understand about the human brain and examining brain tissue is vital to increasing this knowledge.

What Steps Can A Person Take To Arrange For Their Brain To Be Donated For Parkinsons Research

It is important to note that for research purposes, arrangements for brain donation need to be made before death, so that the time from death to removal of the brain is as short as possible. As soon as death occurs, there are changes that occur in the brain tissue that make it much less valuable for research. If family members decide after death that they would like to have their loved ones brain donated, all the steps that need to take place prior to removal of the brain including the proper consent forms, the correct transportation arrangements for the body, access to a pathologist to remove the brain typically cant be arranged in time to make the brain donation a reality.

It is vital to communicate with your loved ones about your decision to donate your brain and the logistics that you have pre-arranged so that they can help make the donation a reality.

Can I Find Out How My Partner Or Relatives Brain Was Used And What Research It Contributed To

Unfortunately, the brain banks cannot give out this information. All the tissue used by researchers will be helping to contribute to what scientists know about the brain and brain disease.

Scientists apply to use the tissue and their application has to be approved both ethically and scientifically. Sometimes, the application will be to use the tissue for teaching or training.

How To Become A Brain Donor

Although decisions surrounding life and death matters are never easy topics to address, the best time to think about brain donation is now. If you are considering brain donation, talk with your family and friends early in your decision-making process. This may reduce stress and misunderstandings at the time of donation. The opinions of family, friends, spiritual leaders, and others in your community may be helpful as you decide whether donation is right for you.

If you decide to donate your brain, consider enrolling in a study soon to provide the most value to researchers and future generations. NIA-funded Alzheimers Disease Research Centers have brain donation programs for their study participants. Contact your nearest center to find out if youre eligible to participate.

My mother believed in education and service to others. This is an opportunity for others who believe in their community, who believe in research, who have had an interaction with Alzheimers to donate. It’s a final gift to those youre leaving behind, participating in the study, knowing that you can be a part of the solution.

What Do We Do To Combat Pd

  • We develop novel gene therapies to halt or reverse the progress of neurodegeneration in the Parkinsonian brain.
  • We repurpose existing pharmaceuticals.
  • We identify and develop unique neuroprotective agents to prevent the cell death associated with PD.
  • We test compounds aimed at minimizing the debilitating movement disorders that are caused by existing drug therapies.
  • We seek out treatments for the non-motor symptoms of PD including depression and GI dysfunction.
  • We genotype PD patients to predict which therapies will be most effective for them.
  • We identify the neuroprotective mechanisms and benefits of early intervention with the surgical procedure known as deep brain stimulation .
  • We invest in adult stem cell therapies to slow, stop or possibly reverse neurodegeneration in PD.
  • We educate the next generation of scientists in the fight against PD.
  • We study the epigenetic consequences of toxicant exposures on the risk for developing PD.

What Might Prevent The Donation

While brain banks do everything they can to ensure that a donation takes place, it may not always be possible. For research, the brain tissue must be obtained from someone who has died recently .

Each potential donation is considered on a case by case basis. Where possible all registered potential donors are accepted. Their suitability to donate will have been assessed during the registration process by writing to the donors GP for information relating to their condition and obtaining key information from the individual making the enquiry.

If there is a delay after death it may not be possible to take samples of good enough quality for research. In these cases, the brain donation will not be accepted. Brain banks have different criteria for deciding whether a brain will be suitable.

Delays may occur because a Coroner is involved and the body cannot be released in time. In addition, brain banks rely on NHS mortuary services to assist with donations, and these may not always be available, particularly over weekends and holiday periods.

Brain Donation: A Gift For Future Generations

Brain donation helps researchers study brain disorders, such as Alzheimers disease and related dementias, that affect millions of people. Learn about why people donate their brains, the process of brain donation, and how you can enroll to make this generous gift.

Our brains are amazing, intricate networks that help us think, love, and breathe. But sometimes things go awry and cause brain disorders, such as Alzheimers disease and related dementias. By studying the brains of people who have died both those who had a brain disorder and those who were healthy during life researchers learn more about how types of dementia affect the brain and how we might better treat and prevent them. Brain donation provides an opportunity to help researchers better understand these disorders, which can lead to improved treatments for future generations.

While many people think that signing up to be an organ donor includes donating their brain, the purpose and the process of brain donation are different. Rather than helping to keep others alive, such as with kidney donation, brain donation helps advance scientific research. One donated brain can make a huge impact, potentially providing information for hundreds of studies. But many brains are needed from diverse populations and ages to help researchers investigate the causes of disease and to develop more effective therapies that can then be applied broadly.

Become A Stanford Adrc Brain Donor

Welcome to the Parkinson’s UK Brain Bank

Nothing is more precious to our mission than brain donation at the time of death. We appreciate the generosity of brain donation from our ADRC participants.

The mission of the Stanford ADRC is to serve as a shared resource to facilitate and enhance multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research, outreach, and education in Alzheimers disease, Parkinsons disease and related disorders. This mission extends to milder forms cognitive impairment and encompasses healthy brain aging.

Our goal is to follow our ADRC participants over time until the time of eventual death, and at that point provide a definitive diagnosis through the ADRC Neuropathology and Biospecimens Core. The state-of-the-art diagnosis adheres to national diagnostic criteria and is based on the microscopic examination of brain tissues obtained during a limited autopsy. ADRC Core faculty contribute anonymous autopsy data to the National Alzheimer Coordinating Center and prepare a brain autopsy report in laymans terms for the participants next of kin. Other autopsy tissues are made available to qualified researchers. The Neuropathology and Biospecimens Core maintains an archive of research tissues from ADRC autopsies.

What Happens To The Brain During And After Donation

The brain donation center will coordinate and pay for the bodys transportation to a location, such as a medical facility, mortuary or funeral home, for the brain removal to take place. A specialist will carefully remove the brain through the back of the head in a way that does not affect a persons appearance. The donors body is then returned to the family for funeral arrangements. It is important to restate: Brain donation does not affect the deceaseds appearance, so the family may still have an open casket viewing if they wish.

Once removed, the brain is sent to a brain bank. A specialist at the brain bank will perform an autopsy to determine whether the donor had a type of dementia or another brain disorder. Autopsies are important to understanding how diseases affect the structure and function of the brain and can help direct future research. If requested, the family will receive a summary of these findings, typically within three to nine months. The report often provides some definitive answers to family members. In a person who died without a cognitive disorder, the findings are also summarized, and sometimes there may be disease markers in the brain that didnt cause symptoms during life. These individuals are of special interest to researchers so they can learn why some individuals did not become ill despite having typical markers of a disease.

Brain Donation: Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who may donate?

Every participant in the Luxembourg Parkinsons Study who resides in Luxembourg may donate their brain. Being able to correlate post-mortem brain analysis with molecular and clinical study results is an invaluable resource for research. Therefore, the brain collection is dedicated to collecting the brains of donors involved in the study.

People with and without Parkinsons disease are invited to participate in this research programme. People without Parkinsons disease are as important as patients as they will be control persons and serve as a reference for comparison with patients. Both patients and healthy volunteers can then register as brain donors.

Legally, any competent person over 18 years of age may donate his/her brain after giving consent during his lifetime. Consent can be given by a legal representative for people who are not able to give their consent themselves.

2. Do I need to have a brain disorder to become a donor?

No. Anyone can become a donor – irrespective of whether you have a brain disease or not. Healthy brain tissue – known as control tissue – is just as important to research as tissue donated by patients. During scientific studies, researchers often need to compare tissue samples from patients with neurological diseases to control tissue.

3. Can I become a donor if I live in the Greater Region?

4. What might prevent the donation?

5. Does donating brain tissue for research purposes interfere with religious beliefs?
