The search strategy identified 1,141 articles from PubMed, 212 articles from Web of Science, 2,800 articles from EMBASE, 64 articles from China National Knowledge Infrastructure, 407 articles from Wan fang, 83 articles from VIP and 260 articles from CBM. After duplicates being removed, 3,205 articles were excluded on screening of titles and/or abstract. After reading full text, 102 articles were excluded for the following reasons: duplicated reports from the same study population lacking OR, RR or HR and 95% CI inverse exposure and outcome review . Finally, 26 articles were included in this meta-analysis. The detailed literature search for article inclusion is shown in Figure 1.

“We know that abnormalities in the large vessels around the heart, the aorta and its primary branches, begin to develop in early childhood in people with Type 1 diabetes,” said lead study author Michal Schäfer, Ph.D., a researcher and fourth-year medical student at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, Colorado. “We found that bromocriptine has the potential to slow down the development of those abnormalities and decrease the risk for cardiovascular disease in this population.”

The drug had shown promise in animal studies, and a phase 2 study in humans did not show any safety concerns. Researchers became interested in the drug when the observation was made that use of the drug for high blood pressure was associated with a lower risk of developing Parkinsons disease.
